"Tiny medal robot is supposed to help a bit of a loser overcome a bunch of other armored fighters, but dude just wants to duck and hide even if it means forgetting his dreams" It was just really nice seeing him overcome that, even if it happened really quickly. |

The giant robot battle was also endearing in how amateurish it honestly was? It's mostly the set, I mean. Between the lights being on way too bright and the glaringly fake sky painted on what is too obviously just a wall, you could really tell how cramped it is. But like, I'm not watching this show for the realism, so if anything it adds to the experience?

I finally got around to watching the first two episodes!
And gotta say, atleast so far, this show is basically what I think Kamen Rider Dragon Knight should have been like. But that's a whole 'nother discussion. When it comes to these episodes, I gotta say, they did a great job at making Liu Bei likeable. He's such a wimpy dork that he's adorable! His actor does great with physical comedy too. So yeah, not too much to say right now considering the show did just start, but I am having alot of fun watching it right now. Really looking forward to episode 3 just based on the episode alone, as Zheng Fei/Cho Hi is almost always my favorite character when it comes to Three Kingdoms inspired works.

Hey guys sorry about the wait. I have the next two episode written I didn't expect it to take so long but here it is.
Episode 3 "Matchless Zhang Fei" Episode 3 shows just exactly what happens once you lose a Dream Battle. With Hei Jin quitting the dojo and leaving town. Guan Yu explains that should you lose your dream will become forfeit and you lose your memories of ever being a Legend Hero. Naturally Liu Bei is quite upset at this but never mind that we have a new character to introduce. This is Miu Zhu and his gang the “Miu Zhu Brothers” after getting rejected by Gongsun Zan trying to woo her one of the Tech Angels show up with a Hero Piece Zhang Fei. Liu Bei is questioning if there is a way to avoid fighting all together. Guan Yu then senses a powerful Legend Hero. And it's Miu Zhu going around just causing a ruckus Liu Bei transforms to face him off. In the end Liu Bei gains the upper hand but hesitates at the last minute not wanting to destroy the guy's dream. Due to some misunderstanding Miu Zhu thought the Legend Hero was actually Gongsun Zan! Lei Biu decides to pretend to be her in order to trick Miu Zhu into straightening his act. Cue awkward helping montage! In the end it fails and the two fight it out leading to a mech with Guan Yu noting Mi Zhu and Zhang Fei aren’t bonding as they should be. And I like this because with so many different players involved it makes sense for a few of the Legend Heroes to butt heads with their hero piece. The episode ends with Liu Bei going up to destroy Miu Zhu Changer. Ending episode 3 and I like the internal conflict with Liu Bei losing his focus because of accidentally destroying He Jin’s dream. And how that affected his physical performance. As for Mi Zhu, he is alright. I know that Liu Bei ain’t going to destroy his Changer so maybe they can become a duo? Well I will just have to watch the next episode to find out. Episode 4 "Path of the Peach Garden" Episode 4 starts with Liu Bei sparing Mi Zhu and retreating with one of his cronies overhearing how Liu Bei just can’t go through with destroying another person's dream so easily. Mi Zhu decides to then harass a cafe and start stealing food all for “world domination” which Zhang Fei actually seems to be reluctant to do. Eventually Guan Yu senses this and tells Liu Bei confronts them once again. Liu Bei during the fight gets injured protecting a bystander and starts getting wailed on by Mi Zhu only for Zhang Fei to interfere calling the battle off. Zhang Fei is a warrior and he doesn’t want to fight like this. After comically fighting one another ultimately Zhang Fei is gagged up and forced into the transformation. Anyways Mi Zhu attacks Liu Bei in the dojo and as he’s getting the upper hand the guy springs up a phony sob story until Zhang Fei shuts it down having enough. They engage in one last mech fight before Liu Bei wins. But before Mi Zhu forgets his dream Liu Bei earnestly asks what his dream is stating that he might put into consideration to which it is just him wanting a girlfriend. So yeah Liu Bei doesn’t really feel any guilt this time but what he is sad for is Zhang Fei's death only for Xu Shu to come in and revealed that a Legend Hero can multiple contracts though with a price. That Liu Bei ignores in favor of saving Zhang Fei and thus Guan Yu has a new “little brother” and honestly I’m digging this family dynamic there going on. All the while a creepy cat themed Legend Hero is watching stating Liu Bei won’t last long now that he has multiple Hero Pieces. Episode 4 was great at building up Zhang Fei as a character and not just a mindless piece. I also like that there was no hang up from Liu Bei destroying Mi Zhu dream as honestly he was a scumbag and his dream was pretty terrible. I think this kind of situational awareness is great and should cut down on some of the drama and angst. Also curious about the cost of having multiple contracts. My best guess is that the Hero Pieces fun on their masters energy so having multiple taxes the body. I’m also curious on how Liu Bei is going to use Zhang Fei. Will he transform into said legend hero ala Decade? Or will he gain an armor/new form like Zi-O?

One thing this show really has going for it when it comes to winning me over is the whole partner shtick with Liu Bei and Guan Yu. I don't really know why, but I've always been a sucker for things like that. Whether it's Go-Onger, Kiramager, Ryukendo, or whatever else, there's something really neat to me about seeing human characters bonding with random trinkets. This episode was pretty much nothing but that, so it shouldn't be surprising I had a great time with it.

I feel like episode 4 was really needed, to teach the dude that not every dream is worth saving.

Good to see someone else getting into my favorite Toku. Criminally underrated.
A couple of notes. While I'm not familiar with the source material, this whole things is apparently based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. To the point where you can guess some plot developments if you know the original. Marcosatsu did a review of this explaining this all. Don't watch it until you are done though. The other note is that this show plays a lot with the idea of dreams and how they affect a person. With the first two episodes, we saw that a bad person can do bad things in pursuit of a dream that is in itself good, while these latest two showed us a person driven to be bad by a dream that is by its very nature bad to. We will continue to see other variations of this theme throughout, so I won't expand further. In this, it is similar to Kamen Rider OOO, although it takes a different spin on things. |
