Shinnosuke finally investigates his new partner's history. And what part will the Roidmudes play this time?!
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts.

I really liked this one. We got a good chunk of backstory for Mr. Belt (whose real name is ludicrously improbable) and some more information on Proto-Drive (which I imagine will be fleshed out in episode 0). The investigation got a bit sidelined by Heart showing up, but the scene with Kiriko in the warehouse had some cool atmosphere. Meanwhile, the fight with Heart is probably the best we've had on Drive so far, with some inventive use of the tire change gimmick and a suitably dramatic cliffhanger.
Speaking of cliffhangers, I was initially disappointed to see that last week's Roidmude was still alive and we were getting another standard two-parter... and then the show didn't wrap it up. I know I've harped on this before, but I'm not a fan of seeing two-parters back. I have nothing against them, per say, but I've felt for awhile now that Kamen Rider was stagnating with the same format and I didn't want to see the show backslide after Gaim finally broke out of that mold. I'm glad to see Drive stretching its legs just a little bit here, even if it's just doing a three-parter with some diversion for backstory. Hopefully we'll see more fluctuation in terms of how long or short Roidmude stories are from here on out (I'm also really happy to see that there's no victim of the fortnight in this arc, either). Honestly, the only thing I didn't like this week was the opening scene in the squad room. I don't know what the hell the director was doing with the chief's candy car speech, but it was pretty damn awful. I'd love to see the show stop trying to force gimmicky laughs out of these scenes and actually use the supporting characters productively. |

This episode is really Excellent, one of the better episodes of Drive... so far.
We finally got some information of the origin of the Roimudes, this is most welcomed. Turns out that they are sort of an "experiment gone wrong" monsters, turning against their creators, with some vengeance against humans... Speaking about humans, oh goody we have Chase in this episode who interestingly wants to find out more about himself via battle with Drive and nearly gets wrecked by Type Hacker! Chase seems to have a very important role among the Roimudes too... I am very happy they remembered to use some tires again, Midnight Shadow and Spin Mixer and Shadow's ability is really powerful! The struggle of Shinnosuke and Heart made me remember about the scene where Kota stabs Kaito in episode 46. After this "Promised Number" thing, this episode revealed a "Dead Zone" , any idea what is it? Oh, the Unholy Night story sounds really awesome. Next episode is when the engines are going to truly start: Mach, Medic and oh my Kota a viral core Tridorion? And how can I forget about this? CANDY FOR YOUR CAR ANYONE?

I definitely feel like this is the first episode that really grabbed me. Not that I haven't been enjoying the show so far, but I feel like this is really the first one that felt like high-stakes drama. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the sillier aspects of this series too (like the chief's antics and Shinnosuke's in-battle quips), but I felt like I was watching the first few episodes mostly just for the sake of seeing a Rider in action. Now it's starting to feel like we're actually going somewhere.

I wanted to come in and complain about how we were duped into thinking episode 9 was a standalone episode and that 10 really was the second part as soon as I started this episode, but after finishing it, I guess it wasn't really quite like that... That plot was still there yet in the background and didn't even get resolved. The problem isn't with two episode arcs in general anyways, but rather having them repeat ad infinitum. So even just a little change in pace like this can help.
That said, still irked Volt is seemingly running around. Also that apparently we should have watched Episode 0 before this? Still haven't seen a stream of it, so moved on and oops... Anyways, backstory! Yay backstory! Mr. Belt and Heart stole this episode. I only hope Heart isn't finished off so soon in the next. I'm thinking there's more related between the two than Heart just being his killer.

I will say........if you watch this episode together with the Episode Zero/Proto-Drive special, everything you've learned from both this episode and Episode Zero will begin to make sense.

Well, that was the least festive Christmas episode ever, if they don't bring it back up next episode.
I liked what was going on by the end of this episode. It really spoke to Shinnousuke's character that he was willing to sacrifice himself to take out Heart. I'm glad we got some more backstory. I hope this non-two-parter thing that's happened for the last two episodes carries on and the two-parters have just been to introduce the different types. |

So from the looks of the episode preview for the next episode, we may be getting Mach earlier then expected.
