Looks promising. While I do appreciate taking Godzilla back to his roots, between this and Shin Godzilla I do worry that they're going to get stuck in this holding pattern of only doing solo Godzilla movies (i.e. no other monsters, just miming the original). They can be some of the best in the series, but I also think this works when they are the exception, not the rule.

After being absent for personal reasons, I'm back! And yes, I got to see all the reveals and I'm even more excited for this!
Godzila: Minus One! That's a title. In another way, instead of referring to the "From Zero to Minus" which is brilliant, it can also be a slight nod to the announcements of detonations (eg. "T Minus One") which serves as a perfect analogy to Godzilla as a living nuclear bomb. The design, while heavily resembling The Ride design, it is actually quite different. Most predominantly, the dorsal plates. The spines on the plates are long and spiky and are more jagged and rough. The neck is longer and thinner, the hands are smaller and have no opposable thumbs, the legs are slightly different, the skin is burned and scarred, the eyes are slightly bigger, and the whole body isn't as bulky. I love it! I'll even go as far to say as this is my favorite modern Godzilla design (including Legendary's), overtaking Ultima who held it previously. And what's more? A US release date in less than a month? And the prospect of being in major theaters (or at least, Regal Theaters, which there's one near me and ironically showed Shin Ultraman, that I unfortunately had to miss for reasons)? SOLD! I always thought there were no movies, or at least American Movies, that would bring me to the theater this year, but because they don't say "limited screening" there is hope, and I'm all for it! On another note, it's kind of funny how Oppenheimer premieres this month and Godzilla Minus One a few months later, as if it's a prequel. Not exactly interested in it, but I still find it funny.

I read somewhere before that instead of making a sequel to Shin Godzilla, they're going to reboot Godzilla once again and create a shared universe. I imagine that's what this is. I'm guessing Toho saw the success of Marvel and the Legendary films and wanted a piece of the action, but felt Shin Godzilla was too "different" to build such a big franchise out of.

At present, the Reiwa Godzilla Era is like the Millenium Era, so far mostly anthologies. However, supposedly a Shin Godzilla Sequel was considered by Anno and even mentioned by Yamazaki (Minus One's director), but didn't take off the ground in Anno's case, and Yamazaki said it wouldn't be right if he did that instead of Anno, that and he's been wanting to do his own Godzilla Movie for a long time.
There was a rumor stating that there might be two Godzillas, one mutated and one not, fighting, however, I don't mind if that happens or not. Again, at this point, we don't know if Toho's revived Godzilla Universe will start here, or what some people are right in saying that refers to Legendary's Monsterverse. Only time will tell. I personally would love a new era with traditional Tokusatsu and Kaiju battle flicks, but I wouldn't mind if Minus One is the new direction, since I'm loving everything I'm seeing for it right now.

I'm a bit let down that they are not using a suit for Godzilla. If Super Sentai and Ultraman can have kajiu battles with rubber suits, so can Godzilla.

Ohhhhh, I really like the atmosphere of that trailer. The level of destruction and terror along Godzilla's sheer strength reminds me a lot of the very first movie.

So, the lady says "Is that... Godzilla?" in the trailer... does that mean Godzilla also attacked Japan before the war? How else would she know it? Or the name?
As for the idea, well, wasn't the first Godzilla movie also in 1950, so only 5 years after the war? Technology levels will be similar here too I guess. Which will make stopping him pretty hard... But, I am just glad to see Godzilla back to destroying cities, instead of murdering random kaiju that never bothered him while humanity cheers for him as its savior... |
