I dig the minor functionality shake-up in how Zox progresses through his forms. Based on how he used them this episode, Twokaiser is actually his ranged form, Ohran from is the hand-to-hand one, and Shinken form is the sword wielder.
Typically in most media (I've seen) characters start with either sword or hand-to-hand, but Zox however opens up with a ranged form and then chooses a close combat style depending on his opponent. It's a extremely insignificant detail, but I do like how it makes him feel more pragmatic. On an unrelated note, apparently Ohran form has an Egyptian(?) theme, I can't remember if there was any connection between the Ohrangers and Ancient Egypt, but apparently that's the premise of Ohran form. Supposedly Egyptian warriors wore a similar outfit to what the form wears: https://www.deviantart.com/iceravenb...rior-245823872 |

Zenkaigers to Zox: You got Gokaiger powers?!
Flint: Yeah, I bootlegged the design. :lolol |

A nice touch to film the fight with Ohren's powers by these particular walls. Anyway, episode was nice, though I did feel Zox's dances while changing forms were a bit too much. Like, a lot of the show boating was fun, but that was kind of the point where I felt they were pushing it. Went on for a bit too long without having much correlation to the forms themselves. That aside, it was a nice silly episode that had a ton of fun. The monster was incredibly odd, which is always nice. Curious about the Tojitendo plot and how Zox connects to it, so I'm excited moving forward. |

Ever since the first official commercial video for TwoKaiser came out, I have felt like Zox and his crew are the cast of a completely different children's toku show from the Zenkaigers, and this episode feels like a special crossover between the two shows! Like, the vibes are really reminding me of the times the ToQgers and Gaim, or Ninningers and Drive got together for a week.
It certainly makes me interested in watching that show about the dancing pirate and his adventures with his family as they search for treasure, but it looks like their show was cancelled so they are going to be rolled together with the Zankaigers from now on. Anyhow, I hope they don't ever drop the transformation dances Twokaiser has to do. I want many instances of him just doing these entire routines in the background while everyone else is fighting or something. |
Damn, I wasn't expecting Secchan to jumpscare me with his intro.
Zox saying "I'm hungry" is a reference to another of Marvelous' catchphrases. I guess suit design isn't the only thing they have in common, but they also build up large appetites from fighting. That catchphrase was my favorite thing about Marvelous so I love how Zox does it as well. We finally see Magine eating and I still don't understand it. So much for my headcanon. Ricky and Kattanar on the other hand are the most animated characters so far, with expressive mouths and eyes. Juran gets turned in to food again, this time as Zenkai Oh JuraGaon Mochi. I imagine he was having a frustrated reaction to that. What's the point of currency in Kaizokutopia? If everybody there's a pirate and there's no law against it so the only people available to pirate from are other pirates, why would anybody ever pay for anything? |

Alright, I know I'm supposed to be focused on all the exciting new characters in this shot, but how can you seriously expect me to care about them when Magine is over in the corner doing the world's most adorable Kamen Rider Garren impression? I joke, but... well, first of all, I'm not really joking, but also, I'm using my obsession with Magine to make a legitimate point about how much I continue to love this show's rich direction! I think it's been a while since I've really called out the sheer amount of visual information densely packed into like every scene, with every character in this whole ensemble always doing something appropriate for their personality, and, perhaps due to how much larger that ensemble just got, I felt it especially strongly this week. It's not even just in the visuals either – the constant overlapping dialogue is yet one more reason it kinda feels like episodes of this show are made to be watched several times over. Zyuran especially is always hanging lampshades on the absurdity going on around him, and it's hilarious. The established cast is as great as usual here. Still, though, exciting new characters! Should probably talk about them a little! I'm liking Zox a fair bit so far, although his siblings haven't immediately won me over. Not that there's anything wrong with them; it's just that they haven't made much of an impression yet. And you know, that's only natural, because the episode is obviously focused of Zox himself, doing the usual additional hero debut routine of finding a new status quo to settle into. It's rather well-executed, with a lot of immediate backstory, a fun clash between Twokaiser and Zenkaiser, and the obligatory hint towards Zox's hidden heart of gold. I'm not sure if I think it was an exceptional debut, but I should also point out that I've long equated a lack of interest in a Sixth Ranger showing up to the show simply being plenty interesting beforehand. I wasn't watching this episode feeling like Zox just NEEDS to be around, basically. That being said, he's proving to be plenty of fun to have around. I rather liked that Kamen Rider Zangetsu stage play, so having the discount Baron from that now starring as a discount Captain Marvelous in a Sentai I'm similarly fond of immediately holds a certain novelty for me. Koumura's writing helps a ton with bringing out that Gokaiger flavor, and the clash between that sort of character dynamic with how the Zenkaigers behave is great. He's a completely different kind of hero, and at the same time, very familiar. This is especially apparent when he's fighting as Twokaiser, because his suit actor has some solid body language going on. Looking him up, it seems Shigeki Itou has only been getting major roles very recently, being the previous two years' Reds, and then Lupin/Patren X before that. Twokaiser is pulling from a bunch of different sources that aren't anything like those guys and yet still makes them all feel natural. I was especially pleased to see Shinken Form doing Takeru's cool behind-the-back block thing, but I suppose when the show's action director was literally Shinken Red, it shouldn't be surprising to see that, huh? Really, the more I think about this guy, the more I'm already starting to like him? A few more particularly good episodes for Zox is probably all it will take for me to truly start loving Twokaiser, but for now, this is already a promising start. |
Okay, Secchan starting the recap with "a bunch of stuff happened" and not even explaining the door thing is so perfectly fitting with how chaotic last episode was and this show's attitude in general XD

Yep, Sentai can make a crazy monster out of absolutely anything, and I can't help but love the Kudaitest, who feels like his own character at this point. And of course, the singin' and dancin' Pirate, TwoKaiser is quite the character. Almost like a merrier version of DiEnd. Love how they just admitted to flat-out stole the Gokaigers' design, and not sure if it was intended or not, but I'm slightly reminded of Space Sheriff Gavan with their ship. All in all, I'm loving how this show has been going, and how it has that classic Toku feel with how unapologetically goofy and over-the-top it is. They probably knew exactly what they were doing when they conceived this. Next week... Zzzzzzzz |
Oh, another thing I appreciated, that I haven't seen anyone else mention yet: How they're drawing out Twokaiser's debut. We got his first transformation, main form and first fight in the last episode. This episode really introduces him as a character and his supporting cast, establishes his dynamic with the core Zenkaigers, and shows off his alternate forms. And presumably the next episode will show off Crocodaioh and Twokaioh.
It's so much better than if they'd tried to cram all of that into one episode. |
