Kamen Rider Revice Episode 1- "Family! Contract! The Devil Whispers!" Discussion
Fifty years ago, mysterious artifacts known as VStamps were discovered. Now, a group known as the Deadmans Cult seeks to revive their ancient master with these strange powers. And a young man named Ikki Igarashi makes a startling change...

The story begins in 1971, just as Kamen Rider did. And man, that 50th Anniversary intro is pretty awesome. Like a Japanese Marvel Studios intro.
Thanks random American dude for freeing the monsters of this setting. The Deadman's seem to collect a bunch of people unsatisfied with society or the world and telling them they can make it better through living through sin and excess. Also, Aguilera is pretty hot. Nice to have a female lead villain. Fenix has an airship? Wow. A Rider with a full family unit! Wow. Of course it gets dangerous when his mom gets attacked. A bathhouse a perfect excuse to show off more male skin for the moms in the audience. Did Ikki just luck into seeing Vice or is there something special there? So Ikki wasn't intended to be a Kamen Rider, his brother Daiji was. He just couldn't handle the pressure. Enough motivation to become a second Rider? I can totally see those Fenix soldiers becoming Riotrooper esque characters if Fenix becomes antagonists. I feel like the T-Rex Deadman looked better than the Elephant Deadman. It was hard to take him seriously with that trunk. Although kind of neat to see the monster the base form is based after appear in the first episode. Ikki's sister can fight. Female Rider potential? Just so you know Vice is still a demon, he was about to attack Ikki's mom before he used the belt to control him. At least there were no fart jokes in the episode. "Hey! Hey! Hey!" way to hype up a Henshin. Way to emphasize your protagonists have super strength with some of those moves and smashing through debris and walls. And set to the Opening! So their Rider Kicks are kicking the stamp straight into the enemy. Does it count as a Double Rider Kick if they're using it at the same time but against different opponents? So it looks like the next form is the Eagle Embryo with W? Not the Megalodon/Decade form? |
George is so cool, I love him already.

First thing that came to mind with the first scene was the Kuuga homage
Not much to say without subs so far. George is funny as expected. Seems like Daiji was intended to be the KR (so Fenix must know he has a devil inside him or in his house at least) the final double kick was cool |
First episode was ok worried Vice is gonna be annoying but yeah (Once again Ikki is the type of protagonist I like down to Earth and I like how he doesn't magically get the urge to help people when the belt/henshin gear rightaway I'd kind of like it when the hero starts off with more personal motivations that EVENTUALLY become save the world)

The dad is a youtuber, mom runs the bathhouse, baby bro is a soldier, sister is a karate kid. Interesting combination.

The Deadman Cult has got to be the funkiest cult I've ever seen.
|
A solid start, for sure. Much more of a cohesive start compared to Saber.
Lemme keep it short since I'm a bit busy: -1971 really gotta make that 50 years theme going -I love that it starts with the bath house already with people so we can get started on the regulars -Vice showing up kinda a bit too soon I feel -I can understand why they chose Kimura for Vice, that's all I got to say. -Gonna love to see the development for Hyuga as a secondary rider, him being the younger compared to Ikki makes it all the better. -Aguilera and her little cult are great, I love Julio's energy, can I please join? Aguilera's cute, too. No touching guys, she's engaged to Gifu-sama already -I love that Ikki brought the regulars to the ceremony, gives that belongingness feeling much like Fuuto. -Nawata's back! Great to see him back in the leading role, but it seems it's Eitoku who's carrying the whole suit acting deal. He is great. I need to Asai back, though. -George is COOL, I love him already, I want him to be a rider, I want him to have more screentime, I want to learn more about him and his backstory with his father, I want this I want that! -Seems as though Episode 0 is actually 3.5 as it probably takes place in episode 3 for Megalodon, as episode 2 is for the Eagle form. -Aaaaaaand everyone knows he's Revice now, great, good job Ikki. Also, still weird that he already knows how to fight. But I can maybe make an excuse since his brother is FENIX captain and his sister is learning Karate. -Also, Yodonna's actor seems to be pining for Aguilera much like Angela Mei did for Magine. https://i.imgur.com/MytbFCj.jpg |
I'm pleasantly surprised by this first episode I must say. The trailers didn't sit well with me and Saber left me fatigued as far as Rider goes (I haven’t even finished it yet), bit I decided to check this out and I'm glad I did. It very much reminds me of some of my favorite Heisei shows as far as the start goes, I like the characters and setting so far and the action was great.
All in all a very nice start for this show, I liked it. |
For some reason I didn't realise all this time or forgot that speed-subbing has technically come to toku, and so I initially watched it RAW in a not very good format and I had to double check after who the controversial actor was because I genuinely wasn't sure!
After having seen the Izu-Subs version now, my initial impressions are that it's OK so far, I'm not too convinced about the devil theme for the 50th, it doesn't seem like one of the great themes they could have gone for though as I've said I'm a bit nostalgic for the earlier 00s shows as opposed to a lot of newer ones but the 50th anniversary opening graphic kind of reminded me of Ultraman and I feel like I should at least give it a fair chance after giving up Saber! Plus I believe I saw TAKAOKA EIJI! :lolol |

As for right now, solid seems to be the most fitting. It's well-paced and sets up a lot of things for later, which technically makes it a better 1st episode than Saber, but it didn't endear me to the cast nearly as much as that one. I think I got a good grip on Ikki, which is nice, but the most interesting thing was him giving back the Driver. It definitely caught my attention. But yeah, solid start. let's see how this goes. |

Here's an interesting article from Mochizuki about it. Translation from /m/. Mochizuki doesn't want to do the 'good punish evil' concept, but 'good and evil being two sides of the same coin' to emphasize the OG Kamen Rider 'evil origin concept', hence the devil contract He also wanted to emphasize the concept of 'Kamen Rider being a lone hero' but instead of making them a pariah, he decided to explore a different kind of loneliness, which is why the family setting. Both Shibasaki and Hanta are fans of public baths, hence the setting. Mochizuki has been a fan of Hanta since he was a student >His works depict the shameful and dark parts of human nature without hiding them, and in fact, many of his stories have dark themes or are gruesome, but they do not leave a bad aftertaste or make you feel depressed. I fell in love with it. He wishes to keep the upbeat mood around even during dark times of the series. The origin of Revice name: >We thought about the words "00i" and "00bai" for a long time, and then we came up with "rebuy". In Hebrew, it means "to bind together," and there is also a demon called Leviathan, so we combined Levi and Vice and came up with "Revise (= correcting evil)"! Stamp ideas came from his kids' toys The chatbox transformation sequence was suggested by special effects director, Mr. Hiroshi Futsuda. Because of stamps. T-Rex was chosen because they want the genetic of a creature with strength and personality. Also helps they haven't had a purely T-Rex Rider before. Kinoshita was the one who suggested for Aguilera as the leader. |
Well that was an interesting episode. Contracting with demons really reminded me of Wizard's contract with WizarDragon, except that in this case Vice can actually talk. He's not as bad as I thought he is, and as much as I hate to admit it I really do like his personality despite the fourth wall breaks (which I'm not too fond of but that's just me). Plenty of potential tensions between him and Ikki which I'm almost certain would be smoothed out gradually via friendship no jutsu (not too familiar with the writer's work) but so far pretty fun. Although if Vice ends up becoming the final boss (highly unlikely) then that's gonna be interesting.
No fart jokes thankfully. The stamps and contracts are really nice touches. Stamps are used to literally stamp contracts with demons here, and whenever a new demon appears they're accompanied by demonic contracts floating in the air. Meanwhile, when Revi transforms a message board appears, which I recall someone on YouTube commnting that it might be a reference to the LINE messaging app that's huge in Japan, which allow you to send little emote things called (you guessed it) 'stamps'. So the stamp motif works both ways wonderfully. Unless the next few episodes become really interesting, I might just watch the next two or three episodes before dropping this because as I've said before, toku fatigue; more specifically keeping up with weekly episodes (I'm just here for the henshin jingles and the fact that I love watching debut episodes). However, good start to the show dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Kamen Rider. EDIT: It's been some time since I saw Amazons but I swear Fenix's airbase uses Nozama Pharmacy's hallway or something? If not, it sure looks similar. |

Everybody's got a dream they're working towards. Mochizuki wants to explore the Kamen Rider's 'loneliness' in a family setting. Ikki's dream is stagnating because he wants to take care of the bath house. |

I'm not in a rush to watch it, I'll wait till Jawsubs or something better comes along, since I think Izusubs are pretty bad.

Also, I don't really think anyone else's chiming besides Jawsubs. I think Genmcorp's stand down (for a while now, they really out of the picture), and Overtime isn't touching it either, IIRC. https://i.imgur.com/gzm0Ug6.jpeg |

He's all we got unfortunately. |
Without opening and ending song scene, they can put a lot more stuff in their first episode. Much more improvement from Saber, where we just know abit from touma (from flashback, and the rest is exposition one liner dialogues), incident happen, and then, henshin plus fight.
I wonder if without ending song, Saber could be better in pacing. (But on a good side, we can have 4 song from Skapara, so, yeah...?) |
I like IzuSubs, perfectly fine to me. Granted I don't understand Japanese at all, hence the need for fansubs, but I think their approach of finding a middle ground between stylized and literal translation works out.
|
I'm not one to watch raw then repeat my watch with subs, so I'll wait until the subs come to comment here.
|
So I did not see anyone mention it, but my ability to spot things often fails me so sorry if it was already said.
The fact that the main antagonists home base is a nightclub setting, is very likely a homage to Devilman. For context: In Devilman the main character becomes Devilman by literally going to a night club with booze, drugs , dancing and sex, a place where humans literally let the devil inside them out. And that is exactly what is happening in the deadman base, it is a club where people let the devil inside out. ----- Right, all in all I loved the first episode, and I am really looking forward to see how this season goes, the action and suits look wonderful, and I especially liked the monster suits after looking at them for a bit, they have a real creep factor going. |

Rant time: "Combi" is a localization of the Japanese term "コンビ," which is literally either "konbi" or "kombi," depending on which website you ask. It's a shorthand for "combination," and can be used as a term for a pair of people working together. TV-Nihon was using it as far back as the mid-00s for their fansub of Transformers Galaxy Force but it has turned up in some of their other work. The word drives me right up the fucking wall because "combi" isn't a word in English. English has a word that's shorthand for combination: "combo." There is absolutely no goddamn reason to use an anglicized spelling of a Japanese term when there's a perfectly serviceable English equivalent that is literally the same word with a different final vowel. You want to use "onii-san" instead of "mister," even though the latter would technically work in that context? Fine. You want to die on the hill that there's no translation for "itadakimasu?" Sure, knock yourself out. But creating a new word, with a fucking translation note, when there's an almost identical perfect equivalent in English is one of the o-baka-san-tachiest things TV-Nihon ever did and I am irrationally angry to see it resurface in Izu's Revice sub. Anyway. Really liked the premiere. I'm not a fan of the Revi/Vice suits; the designs are cool but that specific shade of pink is not working for me. The janky CGI dinosaur legs don't help, either. That said, I really liked the action scenes. Very fast and dynamic with some impressive camera work. I'm really digging Ikki as the protagonist. After 50 years I am astonished that we're seeing a main Kamen Rider whose family is not only alive, but an active part of the show. I am immediately reminded of Ultraman R/B - which isn't always a good thing, but I don't anticipate Revice having 90-second transformation sequences. I also like that the family knows about his powers, too, and that they appear to be his main motivational factor. I'm sure we'll get some conflict with the brother who was supposed to be the Kamen Rider at some point. Vice and his role in the show absolutely give me immediate Den-O vibes. I'm fine with that; it's been a long time since Momotaros and I always liked him anyway. Mechanics are a little different, but I think this part of the show is going to be a lot of fun. I probably had more to say, but I got a bit sidetracked with my fansub complaint. Suffice to say that I thought this was a strong first episode and I look forward to more. Oh, and um... I'm not the only one seeing this right? Please tell me that this isn't just me: |

EDIT: Is he a producer on revice? Google translating the linked page says he's a producer on other shows so that's what I'm assuming? |
Solid first episode, yeah. It felt weird going back to the standard Rider fighting style after we've gotten a year of swordplay so that was refreshing to see.
I also like how shiny Revi is in particular, like as soon as he transformed you could just see all the lights in that room on his suit. I do like how public everything is though, it's very much an open war occurring. But I also like it in response to Ikki, the idea that he doesn't have to hide him being Revice from his family is good because it sidesteps any unnecessary drama for other stuff. Also I'm genuinely surprised at seeing a big family of five in Rider, it's great. Also honestly, if Fenix somehow doesn't end up becoming a big evil force after New Years, color me shocked because they seriously are setting off alarm bells already in my head. |
- Going to actually attempt to keep my thoughts concise this year because man did I go overboard on Saber. Bullet points worked the last time we had a pink Rider, so that's what I'm doing here!
- Pink is a really fun color for a Kamen Rider to be, by the way. Love Revi's whole palette. - Really strong premiere all around. Stylistically, it feels like Revice could've been the show after Fourze or OOO and it'd fit right into that whole era. It's got that same emphasis on weird energy, and yet you can already see the hints of how they're probably going to use these silly ideas to deliver some surprisingly thoughtful drama down the line. It feels like Kamen Rider, and that's about right for the anniversary. - I don't think I made a peep about any of the Revice announcements, but I am really into the premise of this show. A hero powered by a demon is an extremely Rider-y concept, and historically speaking, Rider shows that put a partnership at the forefront tend to turn out pretty good. I've slowly been coming around to Vice, and his dynamic with Ikki is sure to keep things very lively. - In general, I think the structure of this one worked pretty well. It frontloads a ton of exposition to quickly establish the conflict in just the first couple minutes, which sort of frees the rest of the runtime up nicely, and it does a good job demonstrating things by showing them in places, too. Really loved Vice being let off the leash prior to Ikki using the belt, and how that gets across the need to have them fighting as a pair. Ikki has no power without Vice, and Vice has no restraint without Ikki. Like, beautiful, we've got ourselves a premise! - The action was cool! Felt like there was a good budget behind it, some almost Sugihara-esque shots from Shibasaki, and, again, I'm kind of warming up to Vice. The fourth-wall breaking shtick is probably meant to be part of a whole thing about him basically being excited to actually exist and be noticed, so on top of making things weirder, I'm pretty sure it's making a point about the character, and it's always good when the action, the comedy, and the story can all be in sync that way. |
Hey hey hey hey HEY!
That was a much better impression than Saber's post-finale. I guess it was just Uchida underselling them before. Ikki trying to punch Vice and passing it off as shadowboxing when Daiji shows up was pretty humorous. Appropriate as well, considering how Vice is basically a shadow personality of Ikki. Kinoshita can clearly do comedy right. I'm curious about the prerequisite for using the Revice Driver. What trait is required for someone to control their devil? Hiromi even gave a pretty heroic declaration before his attempt, but that wasn't enough to henshin. Daiji's hesitation was also intriguing to me. Despite George deeming him viable, was he afraid he wouldn't be able to control his devil? Maybe it's connected to Ikki's conscious awareness of Vice's existence, since George was quickly able to evaluate his potential. The physical form Vice initially took after Ikki stamped himself was strange as well, since he didn't assume the tyrannosaurus design from the stamp until Ikki used the Driver. Is there something special about Vice, or rather his host, Ikki? As others have speculated, Vice trying to eat Yukimi (while wearing a mask, which makes even less sense than Magine eating sakura mochi without a mouth) seems to be a result of Ikki's suppressed grudge towards his family due to letting the onsen hold him back from his passion for soccer, which he has in common with Souma Haruto. The devil seems to be all impulse and no restraint, acting according to people's evil desires. The debut fight was pretty standard, but I've totally been spoiled by the awesome CGI Wonder World fights early in Saber. So going back to basics is going to take a little time for me to get accustomed to that again. Quote:

My annoyance with them in this premiere of Revice is their inconsistent translation of "akuma". They mostly translate it as demon, but change it to devil for exactly one line when Vice is offering his deal to Ikki. But I think they get the job done better than GENM CORP ever did, so I'm grateful for that. |
Uhm... As far as I'm aware, combi IS an English word. It sure as hell shows up in the dictionary.
|
Quote:
COMBI ADJECTIVE 1. denoting a machine that has two or more uses or functions a combi oven a combi fridge/freezer a combi boiler NOUN 2. a vehicle or aircraft that has two or more possible uses, for example to carry passengers or to transport goods It's just very context specific, and even if it meant any combination it's still not something most English speakers say, especially in the context it was used in this episode, so it always looks kinda off I do sort of have a pet peeve with combi too so maybe I'm biased, idk, it just feels like combo sounds more natural in English so why not change it? I get combi is based on the English word combination, but loan words in Japan don't always have the same meaning or ring to them as in English. For example in a lot of anime (I especially heard it a lot in dragon ball super) characters will often describe a really dire situation where people could die using the phrase "pinchi" literally a loan from the English phrase "pinch" but as in "we're in a real pinch!" but that would be a weird thing to say in English if a space monster was killing people or whatever, you know? So it makes sense to leave out the English word in the English translation for something that sounds more natural In that case (usually it'd just translated to "we're in trouble" or smth like that in the case of pinchi, at least from what I've seen) that's how I feel about combi as well, it's just better to localize it to smth that sounds natural, I get honourifcs and such because they can add context to scenes and be hard to translate, but I think it's best to keep translations natural sounding or it can really take some people out of the moment |
Huh.
Weird, did not know that. Probably because combi actually is used in that context in German and I'm not a native English speaker. |

They got a guy from the extermination team in the cast, AND the inner demon of someone tries to eat his mother? Man, as someone who finally sat down and watched Amazons a few months ago and ended up loving Season 2 this premiere is gift-wrapped for me!
In all seriousness, this was... kinda just fine for me. Admittedly I was putting a lot of expectations on it -- Saber didn't do much for me and Zero-One was, uh. Frustrating? Frustrating for me. So Zi-O was the last time I really truly had fun with Kamen Rider, and Revice being an anniversary season that also looked absolutely bonkers? There's a lot of weight for this one to carry for me personally! And what I got was... well, didn't blow me away, but I'm sure as heck having fun. The worldbuilding is pretty well-packed as others have said; the set-up of Ikki and Vice's relationship is already decently established (it's basically Den-O episode 1 if Momotaros was fucked up and evil), and what stuck out the most to me was how WILD the fights are. Like, wow; I thought Vice was supposed to be the feral one here but Ikki's just going all out smashing walls and roundhouse kicking mooks by their necks and it's like-- GOD this is going to be an intense season, huh?! I guess just for me I don't quite have a strong grasp on everything for me to truly fall in love just yet. But there is of course a lot of different things going on here, so I'm very willing to let the next few episodes expand on them. Not the strongest start, but hardly the weakest either; and really, I'm enjoying myself at the end of the day. Looking forward to the rest of the show! |

It's just one of those things where for whatever the one that makes a little less sense became a lot more popular, who knows why |
Oh, uh, on IzuSubs... I used them for Saber once Genm stopped, and I had no issues there; but I am starting to see what people are saying about them being slightly stilted. I do get it though, and ultimately they seem alright at worst to me.
|
Izu subs is reliable, and to an extent that is what we have currently.
I have my own issues with the subs, but again, speedy and reliable, they do cut comments from background characters at times, even if they are in the direct scene, which is sad. I say they, but is just one person is it not ? |
