Avataro Sentai DonBrothers Episode 11- "The Dog Gets Sunstroke" Discussion
Tsubasa has fallen ill so the remaining DonBrothers must nurse him back to health while still evading the police.

So the Juto(?) are confirmed to be a 4th faction outside of the Noto and Hitotsuki that are apparently so dangerous that Jin has to give the Noto Generals the episode's mandatory exposition dump without any sort of vagueness or cryptic wording just: "The Juto are super powerful. They'll destroy both the human world and the Noto world. There's three of them: a Cat, a Crane, and a Penguin. Now go!"

I feel like there's a really great, important lesson this episode teaches viewers: never let the Donbrothers do a doctor's job. Seriously, literally all four of them utterly fail Tsubasa in his hour of need. Tsuyoshi lacks the gumption to truly think for himself, so he pawns the responsibility off to Tarou. Tarou wants to put his career first, so he pawns off the responsibility to Haruka and Shinichi. Haruka is ready to murder Tsubasa within minutes of showing up to help. And then even Shinichi eventually abandons rational solutions to fall back on superstition instead. Absolutely none of these people end up doing anything that remotely helps Tsubasa, and the plotline is ultimately resolved in a manner that makes it a non-issue whether they ever tried or not. If anything, it becomes less of a story about the rest of the team helping Tsubasa to hang in there until he can get better, and more about the miracle of them not killing the poor guy long enough for someone else to fix him up. I thought it was a pretty great episode of Donbrothers! It really is just an episode where the heroes are completely awful at what they do for 20+ minutes, but in a show about flawed weirdoes, you can get away with that every now and then. There's a great chaotic rhythm to how this one plays out, especially once everyone starts jumping back and forth between helping Don Momotaro and "helping" Tsubasa. It's a structure that's taking advantage of the unique rules Donbrothers has set up for itself, getting a ton of mileage out of the idea that everyone on the team teleports to wherever the battle is. (There's also something weirdly dorky about the whole "Change Off" thing that's introduced here, which I thought only made everything funnier. Like, having a specific callout for that would seem unnecessary for even the most traditional of toku heroes, which only makes it seem even sillier to see characters in Donbrothers doing it.) What ends up keeping everything glued together in the end is that, while it's doing all this nonsense with medical emergencies and wannabe ninja, this is also an episode that offers a lot more clarity than usual when it comes to the overall story of the series. Even on just a minor level, we have it explicitly confirmed that Haruka didn't bother to register Tsuyoshi's face back in episode 1, which I believe was only left to implication until now. (And to be fair to Haruka, what some salaryman superhero looked like was probably pretty low on the list of new information she was taking on back then. It was a very busy day for her!) But more pressingly than that matter, we're given a surprisingly clear explanation of what Jin's role in all this is, and an inkling of how the Nouto might relate to that, all done in a way that -- naturally -- is also sure to leave the viewer with at least one new question for every one it answers. We know what Jin's role is, but how and why did he end up there? Still shrouded in mystery! Pay attention to folded paper instead! ...Oh wait, it's not really that apparent why we need to do that either, is it? Didn't I start this train of thought off by mentioning how much clearer this episode was about things that usual? Ah well, I guess that's just Donbrothers for you. The heroes might all be crazy, and the series arc might just be an endless trail of breadcrumbs, but somehow, it's still supremely entertaining and well put together anyway. The use of the ending theme this week was pretty dang effective, by the way. |
This feels like what I would personally consider the first filler episode of DonBrothers. And I don't mean that despairingly because I think filler episodes have a place in long episodic TV series, it gives the audience a chance to breath, etc.
Still enjoyed this episode and there's hardly much to complain about. Unless you really wanted a mecha fight. At this point, you could swing either way if that was a good or bad thing. |
Filler? Between the explanation of the new villains, Natsumi, Saruhara, and Kijino learning of each others' identities, and the teasing of Miho potentially being a villain, there was quite a lot to this episode despite all the gags.

next week is the Don Onitaijin's debut.

The majority of the Donbrothers falling over each other, getting in each other's way, accidentally stopping the monster dead in its tracks with salt, and then rounding it all up by actually looking really cool and competent... I feel like this episode sort of nicely encapsulates everything I like about this bizarre team dynamic in one neat package!

This episode was fantastic. New rules set up wth the "guardian", the new enemy making their move, a lot of fun between the team and the Miho reveal - I didn’t see that one coming.
I still think her looking identical to Natsumi will be of some importance, giving that Tsubasa did not see her picture but in this episode it was shoved into Haruka's face. Much like certain team members not knowing the identity of the others, a few have been made aware of Miho but not others, particularly Tsubasa who would identify her as Natsumi. Maybe Natsumi was the original human being and Miho is the disguise of the Beastial that took over Natsumi's body? Anyhow, did anyone else notice that the action was particularly good this week? The fight choreography and stunt work were excellent. |
Good episode! Love this dsyfunctional groups of weirdos oh so much! With the reveal of Miho being a Juuto, I'd wager the whole Tsuyoshi-Tsubasa-Miho-Natsumi thing goes something like this:
1) Tsubasa and Natsumi are an engaged couple. 2) A crime happens, forcing Tsubasa to evade the police for an entire year in order to keep Natsumi safe, as promised. (What the crime was, and who this promise was made to is still unknown.) 3) At some point, The Crane Juuto possesses* Natsumi. 4) Since the possession* wipes all memories, the Juuto simply takes on a new idenity as Miho, and the rest is history. (Whether or not she married Tsuyoshi as a convient cover story, or geniunely loves him.....that's something I'm sure Inoue will have fun with later!) (*I don't think we know if the Juutos possess people or if it's a Worm situation where they shapeshift and replace the victim they killed yet.) Quote:
Like, I've only seen a few, but the essential aspect of Sentai imo is the sense of a team becoming tight-knit, relying on each other to multiply their strengths and overcome their weaknesses to save the day, right? So every moment spent dedicated to the team getting closer, even if it's a silly story like failing to take care of a sick teammate, is inherently important to the story? That's my personal opinion, of course! |
Yeah... I knew as I was typing the word filler that people would likely disagree with it regardless if I prefaced it with saying there's nothing wrong with fillers.
I'm using filler here as defined by a significant shift in story momentum- not merely the absence of story-pushing details (because by that logic you could run a show with a single character standing in a room and as long as they reveal an important story detail in the last 5 minutes, the episode would not be considered filler). Many people also refer to this as padding or breather episodes. An episode following such a big arc around OniSister was bound to slow things down a bit. And that's perfectly great; indicative of careful story telling even. Semantics aside, I will reiterate that I enjoyed this episode. DonBrothers has been the toku show I look forward to most every week. |

Sorry, I didn't think it would be that contentious. |
Ah, I didn't mean to make it sound like it's a big problem or anything! Just that I think confusion would be natural because that's not likely to be anyone's first thought at what 'filler' implies. Sorry if I made it sound otherwise!

While the literal definition of "filler episode" is

Personally, I consider a "filler episode" to be any episode you can remove from the series without impacting the overall plot. This does not apply to this episode of Donbrothers. If you were to skip this episode, you'd miss out on Haruka, Shinichi and Tsuyoshi finding out each others identities, details about Jins situation, his first meeting with the Noto and the reveal of Miho as a Juuto. The main plot might seem like a goofy filler plot, but it's actually the build up to the identity reveal |
Maybe the new beastials are like kabuto worm where the detective and kijino housewife is being replaced and confused about their memories. Who knows. Inoue isn’t good a paying off given his track record in the past.

I thought the CGI scene with Sayama running after Inuzuka's bike was pretty humorous!
Nice to have confirmation from Kitou that she really didn't bother to remember Kijibrother's identity. It fits with the more selfish side of her personality, that she would've only concerned herself with finding Momoi Tarou at that time. Shurikenki has my favorite Hitotsuki design so far. Sure, I'm totally biased cause he's a ninja, but like, he has a projectile shuriken hat! That's awesome! Looks like the terms of being a Donbrother are a little flexible, since the system exempts Inuzuka due to his temporary illness and Saruhara and Kitou are able to "go AFK" when they need to deal with a real life problem. I enjoy the presence of the video game motif here. Poor Kijino though, he keeps getting plugged in and out at unfortunate moments, although he might be reaping the bad karma from Episode 8. Don Momotarou seems to have a leader complex, like he feels like his authority is threatened by Inubrother barking orders (haha, get it?) and being referred to as a companion. This continues to show that Tarou is a hypocrite who doesn't like being overshadowed. Maybe he'll get development for this later. I'm curious about what the reveal of Miho being a Jyuto means, but how that might be relevant to Natsumi, what exactly are the Jyuto, I don't feel like I know enough information to speculate. It's probably going to be a source of distress for Kijino though, if he ends up having to fight Miho. Quote:

Also this episode slapped just like the rest of Donbrothers, when I watched this on monday I was howling about how Haruka was willing to murder the shit out of a sick man |

Like yeah, the command can be used to comedic or dramatic effect depending on the scenario. But its use in this episode of Donbrothers seems pretty normal, despite being the first time we've seen them do that. I just wanted to point out that this isn't totally out there or weird, just something that Sentai haven't done before. Kamen Rider Kabuto also had the "Put On" command to undo "Cast Off". Quote:

- I find it silly these comically atypical heroes are so concerned about the etiquette of saying the proper catchphrase even when they're in a big hurry - I find it silly that the show abruptly introduced the notion there even is a catchphrase for that 11 episodes in when we've seen them undo their transformations with no particular fanfare before - I find it silly that the show introduces this super tokusatsu-y catchphrase, the kind that usually exists to make an action seem cooler, and then has the visual for it just be the Gears limply flopping out of the DonBlasters with an underwhelming sound effect. <-This one might be the biggest reason I found it funny. Crucially, I also get the feeling from all of the above that the show was trying to play it as a silly moment. But yeah, I definitely overstated it a bit by acting like that's not a thing any toku hero would or should ever have period. (Although I've always thought "Put On" was sort of silly too, incidentally.) I like the point about this being a thing the kids at home can mimic, by the way! That's a really sweet way to think of it! |
