S.H.MonsterArts Godzilla 1989
Looks like Tamashii will be doing a S.H MonsterArts figure on Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989). It looks like it will be released in October and will be 19,980 yen. From the looks of it, it can light up and roar.

Wow...that price. I guess that is to be expected with the light up gimmick and apparent roaring. But even then, nearly $200 after shipping is a BIG pill to swallow. Heck even if it was cheaper I wouldn't probably do it since I own the NECA one. But at that price range I can easily pass on it.
|
Goddamn. Roars, music, lights. This is a hell of a figure. I admit, I'd go for it if there was money to spare, its probably the most impressive MA so far. But I'll be happy with GMK.
|
Hmmm....
Hmmmmmm..... |
Seems like it can play BGMs too if the product page is correct.
|
So Godzilla has lights and sounds for only$200 not bad. Wow that's some monster art.
10.00 says bandai will release other Godzillas like this in the future. If not then bandai will rerelease past Godzilla monster arts like the special color dragonball z Figuarts and add lights and sounds to them. I knew it was another rabbit hole that bandai wanted to created with light up figuarts time will tell if this sells well or not. |
I love this design.
However, the price is killer, even for a SHMA :lol Still though, I like the lights. Look quite nice~ |
Oh boy, I hope they don't bite off too much here. Because I don’t really know anyone who was like "I need SHMA's with lights and sounds!" in the past. People are happy with what they got.
Also the price is not helping. I'm not usually someone who slaps Tamashii with the "Overpriced" tag, but double the price of a usual SHMA just for lights and sounds is... not good. Plus I know people who want this design in SHMA-form, but not like this, that'll stink for them too. And of course, the fourth Godzilla figure this year. I really hope all of these sell well enough so that we can get something else than Big G himself. |
More Heisei...
At least they are doing my favorite version of Godzilla from that era, but come on, when is Bandai going to showa love? Wait, $200? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... |
I hope they make a Final Wars version someday.

Well its not the first time they've done a $200 MA. Honestly surprised it's even this price, since it looks like the general MSRP for most MA has went from around $64-75 to $77-85 as the norm, if '54 and GMK are anything to go by. And yeah, I'd like to see something not Godzilla. Anguirus would be nice, or another Rodan. Hell, another Gamera. However I also know that Godzilla is one of the few monsters to sell...at least in Japan. And even some of them end up as exclusives, like '64 and GMK. If I may go on a tangent, something that hasn't been brought up yet in any of these threads is that Kaiju movies don't have that large of a fanbase in Japan. Everything I've seen in the last few years indicates a very passionate but niche market place, odd as that may seem. Even Shinpei Hayashiya has stated that in his opinion the future of Kaiju films is in the west. They just don't so as well as they did. To me, it seems like Bandai is aware of the larger market in the west, which is why a lot of stuff gets general releases from bluefin. However it seems that in terms of what gets made is from a predominantly Japanese view. It wouldn't be the first time Bandai has done something like that. For all the broadening they're doing right now, it's mainly with license from western franchises, rather than flaunting their own. I cannot think of a better example of this than their Sentai line, which was clearly influence by current series. The only divergence was with Zyuranger/MMPR, which in itself only happened because Akibaranger influenced it, and importing of Tyranno and Dragon was high, leading to a full team. But that's about as much effect it had. Bandai never put forth an effort in making something with PR in mind outside of that incident. No Megaranger for In Space, Timeranger for Time Force, Go-Onger for RPM. But we got Overdrive because Boken Red was in Akibaranger.(Not to mention characters never adapted, which probably killed the line, but I digress.) My point with the wall of text is that I feel the MA line has had similar treatment, that same narrow focus. But its hard to argue with when Godzilla actually keeps selling. They could be opening up more, I know '54 and GMK were highly desired outside of Japan. But that's still Godzilla, and there's still a great imbalance of Showa representation in general. Now, if they do get around to other Kaiju, Anguirus I think be the most desirable G-related monster outside JPN, though I'm willing to bet Baragon would get a release first. |
That is very impressive I like it I like it alot.

Biollante was $230, so this Godzilla isn't the highest priced MA, but still. I'm going to pass. He's actually suppoed to be the start of a new MA line that is going to have electronics, but I just don't see the reason for it. Plus, they have trouble keeping up with quality control on the figures as are, how can they handle ones with lights and sounds?

If it's true it sounds like it'll either sell really well or fail spectacularly, but either way I don't think it means we'll be seeing moulds particularly regularly. |

http://i.imgur.com/DpBVL0i.png Guess that's the title for the subline which will feature Monsterarts toys with lights and sounds. |
That'll do then :lol
I dunno. I can kind of see the logic of going in a new direction, but this seems even more niche than the original SHMA audience. The inflated price is probably because of that. |
Yeah the problem still remains… if there are not people who are buying regular SHMA’s, why should these new ones change that?
I mean yeah, Godzilla might get a few casual collectors interested, but what are they going to do once they release a monster that isn’t Godzilla in this "My little monster really speaks and sings!"-subline and it’s not selling? Also the casual collector might lose interest as soon as they see the price tag. Maybe the future of the line is a complete Web-Exclusive status in Japan with most of the sales going on with Bluefin in the west. I think it’s safe to say that as soon as a new mold does come around that isn't Godzilla that it won’t be sold in Japanese retail. |
Nobody here seems to have noticed or mentioned the size of this Godzilla. This isn't a standard Godzilla here, which is part of what makes the SHMA KKK (...uh) subline more distinct. This Godzilla 1989 is 20cm, 7.87 inches, tall. For comparison, the largest SHMA Godzilla is only 15cm, while King Ghidorah is 25.
It doesn't "fix" the issue of the cost, but it is a bit more than sticking LEDs and a soundbox in the hollow bits of a Godzilla and calling it a day. |
Why always Godzila? I mean there are still monsters from the Godzilla series that they can do. Hell they don't even have to stick to that series, they could do something with Ultra Act and get some of the weirder monster designs out like Dino Tank and Five King.

I'm sad that you had to remind me of the Sentai line being dead. I wish we got season 3 of Akibaranger. I know the line did not sell well but some teams did sell. I also had a lot of hope for that Megaranger figuart rumor from that list a while back. I just find it so unfair that Godzilla can get a webshop release even if it only 2 or 3 times a year. While the Sentai line gets nothing release at all. |

Yeah I agree about people wanting the full team before buying any. However, some of those people don't even support the line like preorders it when it opens. |
Quote:
Fans want full Sentai teams, Bandai needs good sales to release more Sentai Figuarts, but fans wait until the team is completed before they start buying. I didn't mean 22 fans :lol I should've hyphenated it to make it more clear. My bad~ And the problem with Sentai is that there's a lot more than Riders. It's hard for fans to fund one team when there's no guarantee the team they actually want to buy will even get made. It's hard to put your money where your mouth is when the franchise with 40 entries barely has, what, 7 completed teams total? |
Quote:
There are too many Sentai teams. Yeah I think it only 7 teams that are complete or just missing one member. I feel that Bandai should just do the popular teams only. Like finish the rest of Kyoryugers or Megaranger or Deka. I still have just some bit of hope that the Sentai line is on hold for now because of other figuarts line they are doing. Maybe one day they will go back to them and release more. |

As for Kiva he will be the last rider that will get made from the figuarts renewal line . That's what I meant about being the last rider. |
Why would Kiva get placed in the renewal line? He doesn't have a Figuart to improve on.

Also speaking of renewals when do you think that gaven will get a release he a renewal? |

Gavan? If he makes another movie appearance, then yeah. |

The increased size is nice, and the light up feature is neat, but sound effects and music ruin it for me. I hope when and if they do a shin Godzilla SHMA that there will be a version that lacks electronics, or I might just stick to vinyl figures from here on out.
