Which Toku series that completely changed your initial opinion of it?
So instead of watching Garo Makai no Hana as I should, I ended up sepnding this quarantine binging Garo Yami wo Terasu Mono. And holy shit, I remember hating this show and couldn't bother finishing it after episode 3 because it is so different. And boy oh boy was I so wrong, because come episode 4, the show got heavily serialized and it gripped me over and now I've finished this show instead of Makai no Hana!
Why? Because while there are still things I hate (CGI suits, lack of suits), this show is very plot heavy, and a good plot at that! It ended up completely changing my opinion of Yami wo Terasu Mono, and makes me want Garo to have that kind if serialization again. So, back to the actual topic. Which Tokusatsu show that you hated? But then completely change your opinion of it after second watch or giving it a second chance? |
I was not excited for OOO going in, like at all, but it ended up becoming one of my favorite Rider seasons. One of my biggest concerns at first was that with so many collectable power-ups the show would just be an endless parade of toy ads, but now OOO is my go-to example of how to manage an absurd number of collectable power-ups without dragging down the plot, and in some cases, even adding to it.

Black RX. That show has a pretty poor reputation in comparison to its predecessor and, to be fair, its early days can be a bit rough. By the late teens, though, it really takes off and becomes a very enjoyable and worthy series on its own merits.

I never had much exposure to toku before I watched Kamen Rider Gaim, so when I watched it I thought that I stumbled onto the most mind blowing genre ever.
And then I saw Wizard. It was good, but after seeing the absolute masterpiece that was Gaim I felt a bit ripped off. I learned not to have too high of an expectation when it comes to watching new shows. |
I’m gonna be honest and say Power Rangers Samurai. I’m one of the maybe 35 or so PR fans who decided to drop out of the franchise rather than try and replace it. I saw some trailers for Samurai which didn’t really grab me and felt incredibly generic. But I watched the show (albeit, it took me two years to actually finish it, due to me dropping off at random points). But by the end, I think it’s an alright season. Nothing really atrocious, but nothing spectacular. (I still haven’t seen Shinkenger, aside from the movies and two episodes.

I don't know if I "hated" it per se but I remember thinking Kamen Rider W might not be for me. The goofier powers like the rubber arms, the more Sentai-looking monsters, the overall "animated" tone that the show had...it was a bit of a jarring shift from what I was used to. I don't think I ever fell in love with it but I did finish the show and thought it was well-made, even if I wasn't the audience for it.

@Topic: Kiva. Mostly because I watched the first episode and didn’t understand what the hell was going on. The whole theme of two different time periods really needed some time to work for me but once it did I was hooked. I really liked watching this show. |
