Which Toku series that got you hyped....... only for it to be killed off?
Nothing will ever be as disappointing and killed all my hype as much as Kyuranger did to me. Back when it was first announced and promoted, I was hyped as hell. At the time my interest towards Sentai is waning signifiantly so Kyuranger was seen a breath of fresh air. The suits are amazing, 9 members from the start with half of them being voice acted which could potentially make them the Sentai equivalent of Imagin/Ultraman Zero. Everything was hype about it!!!!.........
.........And then episode 1 hits. I swear if Kyuranger hadn't been too Red-focused and you know, actually did what Sentai is supposed to do and balanced the characters, it could be a great Sentai. A shame, because it had so much potential, even the cast is amazing, Lucky included when he's not screaming. To be honest it wasn't that bad as the series got better but the damage has already been done. When it comes to other Toku shows.......... I guess the closest one is Wizard? So what's your Toku shows that got you hyped and then got disappointed by it? |
Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. I'd heard alot of good things about it, with many calling it an "underrated classic" amongst other things. And at the time the only other Rider show I'd seen was Saban's Masked Rider, so I went for it.
And holy crap was I majorly let down. In the entirety of that show, there were only 5 episodes I actually out and out liked; Sting's' character arc, which in turn lead to him being the only character I liked from that mess. Yeah, alot of the US-original stunts were well done, but that can only carry you so far. I actually put off watching Ryuki for a couple years because I didn't want to be reminded of how friggen bored I was watching Dragon Knight. |
Kiva, Kabuto and Faiz are all series that I'd heard bad things about going in, decided "alright, I'm gonna try and see the positives here; I'm hyped for these and wanna prove those people wrong!"... and then ended up disliking them more than any other Toku I've seen. Even Ninninger.
Though, I mean, I don't hate Kabuto or Faiz. They're definitely series where you either completely vibe with the tone or you just don't. And for me it didn't work. |
Kuuga.
A show with unrelenting praise ended up just being your bog standard KR mystery. I honestly feel I wouldn't have been as let down by Kuuga if anyone was willing to speak ill of it, but as it stood, I felt it was just an average show that had a hard time holding my interest. Hell, to this day, I still don't understand why people talk so highly of N-Daguva-Zeba when Go-Gadoru-Ba existed. If this was a year or two back, I probably would've said Kabuto. A show with such gorgeous designs wasted on such a horrible story with annoying characters. However, upon my rewatch, something clicked with me. I think a combination of knowing it's biggest faults along with me seeing that Tendou was supposed to be a flat character for Kagami to grow really helped me "Get" Kabuto, so to speak. It's far from a good series, but I've come to appreciate it. |
Ex-Aid
Some of the silliest dialog I've ever heard in a Toku show, not to mention a plot that tries so hard for you to take it seriously but end up being tone-deaf and goofy |
Drive. Coming off of Gaim and reuniting the W creators? I was all in for this. Ultimately, it did pay off, but the first half of the series is really rough. The padded out episodes, time wasting Chaser fights, and a cast made up of 90% comic relief characters really strained my patience.

The roman noir-flair, the awesome suits, the interesting gimmick - I was really looking forward to watching this when I started getting into Kamen Rider. It didn't work for me. I didn’t like a single character, Akiko is the worst sidekick in Rider right after Onari, and the heavy use of the two-part formula wore me out very quickly. I also remember being bored that the story was so barebones and at the same time went absolutely nowhere. That's pretty much it because these days I don’t really get hyped for new shows anymore. I look forward to them, I'm happy when they turn out to be good, but that's it. |
Decade and post-switch Hibiki were frustrating experience, but at least with those I already knew beforehand and had lowered my expectation accordingly (though I still ended up being disappointed somehow :lol)
The one that I hadn't expected was Build, I suppose. Really liked the beginning, and the ending's not bad, but almost the entire middle was ruined by increasingly stale drama/comedy (ymmv) and one of the most tiresome villains I've ever seen. If it counts: Garo Crimson Moon (the second anime series). I was hyped for its setting and because of the really enjoyable previous season... this one seriously sucked, though. Terrible plot, character development, and production value all around. |
