Kamen Rider on Toei Tokusatsu World Youtube channel
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise, Toei will be making episodes of Kamen Rider available on the Tokusatsu World Youtube channel with official English subs.
Releases will be weekly, Saturday/Sundays, 1-2 episodes at a time. ALL Kamen Rider series will be uploaded. https://www.toei.co.jp/release/public/1224357_1140.html |
Holy shit, go Toei.
So like just so I don't misunderstand. They're essentially subbing and releasing EVERY series over time? |
Huh, wonder what they mean when they say selected episodes. Or rather I'm curious what selected episodes they'll do.
Reminds me of how Tsuburaya would do it and bring in related episodes to whatever was happening in Z that week. |
I guess it's understandable, but it says that for the 50th anniversary they're releasing 1 or 2 episodes from every series, not all of the episodes.

Wonder what this means for ZX, ZO and J though. Might just get their full movies alongside Shin. |
This is the biggest win for foreign rider fans ever. What a way to end the year.
|
... honestly, I dunno; this kinda sucks?
If we get full ZX, ZO and J off of it - because there's nothing else for them - then that's awesome, but 1-2 episodes of each is like. Okay? At least with other series on the channel like Gavan it seems they eventually done all the episodes, but this is pretty paltry and kinda pointless. Fun if you already like these shows so you can look back on their first episode or something but ultimately frustrating if you want to see more, just leading back once again to illegal fansubs. Also, the site notes that 'viewings may be restricted in some areas', so I can't wait for this to probably be America-only again. |
It does kind of suck that Toei seems really hesitant to pull a Tsuburaya and just start uploading Rider series onto their YT channel for a limited time, but I mean if baby steps can lead to them finally giving in and doing it, whatever. I'll take it.
I assume the "select episodes" will be memorable or iconic episodes/arcs from each series, given the celebration angle. |
I just hope they're kept up for a super long time unlike the Gaim Movie, it was a shame it didn't even last 24 hours before being pulled like that.
Mostly for people who didn't really have the time to see it live and were hoping it would be available for some amount of time. |
Neat, but kind of insubstantial. I hope maybe it does lead to some fully subbed series being uploaded later though.
|
They're doing this to see what series are popular so they can think about officially licensing them.

It's like Toei still doesn't get it. Tsuburaya and the Owners of GARO seem to have an understanding of how this should occur if it's going to occur optimally. |
The thing is that... wasn't that what the Heisei Generations Forever sub was supposed to be for? Like, 5 months ago? At the very least you should surely have a couple safe bets by now; Black, Den-O, W, Gaim... put out one of those alongside this.

I don't think this is the big worldwide push people think it is? It reads more like Toei doing what Tsubaraya does with their old Ultra shows - a nice highlight reel of best moments for people to enjoy, and to entice them to sign up to whatever streaming site they eventually decide to add more series to, or just buy the DVDs.

I mean, a highlight reel of stuff you've not seen sounds ideal to advertise to people? Like, a few "best of" clips to show someone exactly what Rider is about? The lack of DVDs and streaming is then the killer, but this could be them tiding it over till they can figure something way or distribution that works exactly how they want it to? Idk, that's speciation only people at Toei know.
Of course, the elephant in the room is that Toei knows people in the west have some way of watching Kamen Rider, otherwise why would they keep pestering it, but it can't say that because doing so would be tantamount to going "yes, it's okay to pirate our shows" ... but I wonder if, considering it nets them additional money in merch for no extra expenditure promoting it abroad, subbing everything, licensing worldwide, etc, do they care that much? Throw the western fanbase a few bones every now and then to keep them sweet, but otherwise, well, those Westerners liked it enough when we paid them no attention, why ruin a good money maker? Idk, this is me going full conspiracy theory, it's equally likely they just don't care enough beyond "Ummm have we considered YouTube", but I'm too tird to be cynical. |
This is a nice bit of news... i mean logically it would make no sense to relase ALL what 31 series with anywhere from 32-79 or however many episodes per series that would take TOOO long with only 1-2 eps a week.
Now this could be some mistranslation stuff, 1-2 episodes a week encompassing every series. This MOST LIKELY means we'll get a few episodes per series total and it makes perfect sense since that would only take 31 weeks to cover 71 to Saber (could even get ep 1/2 of the 5th series) totally doable in a single year. However it could also means 1-2 episodes PER SERIES per week. This of course is highly unlikely but we'll just have to wait and see definitely a bit of a surprising announcment no matter which form it takes. This could actually be a really good thing. Toei releases a couple episodes per series then based on the views determines even if its not a fair as sesment the most popular series to then license out for streaming. |
In an ideal world, we would have a worldwide toku-exclusive streaming service.
|
Amazon already has the 'Toku' sub-brand for streaming (which I just found out has Agito???)
That would be a perfect place for Toei to put past shows on for a monthly subscription fee. I wonder if there are any licensing issues or if its a matter of translation resources. Subbed and dubbed K-Dramas are doing extremely well on Netflix at the moment. An entire back-catalog of toku shows (give me Metal Heroes!) seems like a smart move. |
I'm a little surprised how upset I keep seeing people be about the rate at which Toei is extending Rider's reach to an English-speaking audience. The progress made just in this year alone already seems pretty insane to me if you step back and think about it. We went from little more than an out-of-print DVD of The First and two adaptations that failed to catch on to having two cornerstone series readily available online with extremely high quality translations, plus Heisei Generations Forever, which debuted with a reasonably publicized livestream where Woz thanked everyone for being fans.
The comparisons keep getting made to how Tsuburaya is handling Ultraman, but all that reminds me of is the position they were in back before Ginga was on the air, and how gradually they worked themselves back up to the point we're now at with Z being a bona fide hit in Japan that also made fans across the globe. I feel pretty good about the momentum that's been building with Rider lately. I've been hesitant to jump in on this conversation, though, because it's hard to put my thoughts in a way that doesn't sound like I'm scolding everyone for not accepting their table scraps, which isn't my intent. It's downright valuable that everyone is loudly eager to see more! That's how change happens, and I swear I get that! The biggest gripe I have right now has less to do with the selection (I have deep fear of official subs being rushed and terrible; see "Honshin!"), and everything to do with the region exclusivity. And I'm not even directly affected by it! But getting the shows that are already out there to even more people definitely seems like it would be both an easy and effective way to keep building an audience. That's priority number one to me. It really hurts the sense of community fun to see people who are part of all these circles have to put a big asterisk on their excitement for these developments that they still have to take a page from the Gokaigers anyway, you know? |
Oh hey, I predicted this back when they uploaded the Heisei openings. This is a great step forward. Really glad to see Toei hasn't given up on making Kamen Rider more accesssible.

It will take forever for them to catch up. Besides, Tubi has both the 1971 show and Kuuga. I think Toei needs to have Cruchyroll sub the recent Kamen Rider shows.
|
So these won't be geoblocked then?

If they were Zi-O Blocked, that'd be a real shame, since I Woz really looking forward to Toei opening the flood Geiz to a much greater western presence for Kamen Rider. セイバーとかいつ海外にたどりツク?ヨミができないよね。

My knowledge of written Japanese stinks, but my knowledge of sources to put it in romanji doesn’t.

Only thing dampening my excitement for this is the incredibly slow drop it sounds like we'll get. And if "select" episodes doesn't mean they'll never complete a series? I'll watch whatever goes up probably, but will be a hard sell to any newcomer if nothing gets completed and you have to go pirate the rest of a series.

Is this (plus zio-decade rider time) is everything that we’ll have to celebrate kamen rider’s golden age celebration?

I highly doubt Toei's gonna let this year pass without at least a movie celebrating the 50th.
