SSSS Dynazenon Discussion Thread
the next chapter in the Gridman Universe is about to begin!

Just saw the first episode, and I was expecting something something like SSSS Gridman's first episode, but boy did they prove me wrong.
It's always that first fight scene that just magnificently sells it to me, it's much like Gridman's but cranked up a couple notches to make a real spectacle. But as expected, the cast is introduced in a rather mundane, dull, everyday life style, and then WHAM!, something comes out right out of left field. I'm glad there weren't any long pauses like with Gridman, which I really like. I'm already in love with Dynazenon, and would love to get a figure of, including Gridman, and I think Gauma might become my favorite character. |
Dynazenon was pretty neat. I don't have much thoughts on the episode itself but I really liked what I saw.
Gauma so far is the big standout character, love him a lot. |
Definitely feels like Dynazenon has 2-3 more forms! Excited to see what's next, especially what's up with Yume.
|
I liked the first episode a lot. The storytelling through showing instead of explaining is what I really dig about Gridman as well as Dynazenon. You can already get a good glimpse about what's Minami's deal, and the worries of other characters are also just displayed in the open instead of characters just randomly explaining stuff.
The action sequence was good, I really like Dyna Rex. But now I do wonder how this world will work, where the monsters come from, where Dynazenon comes from and if this takes place in the same universe as Gridman. I would be disappointed if it's just a virtual world yet again. Quote:
|
Tsuburaya uploaded Dyna Dragon's debut episode in Gridman at the same time. Mmm, synergy.
I really liked the first episode. Unmistakably a follow-up to SSSS.Gridman. I look forward to seeing these characters work through their issues with the power of friendship and also a giant robot. Speaking of, man, Dynazenon is a really cool looking robot. I hope all the individual components (there's a smaller robot inside???) get to do stuff. I would assume they will since Dynazenon has 4 pilots, but 3 of them don't seem to do anything? |
I finished SSSS Gridman!
|
|
I've been enjoying Dynazenon so far. The straight up toy approach is entertaining.
For a lot of these Trigger shows, it's becoming a game to see where they have saved animation and sequence time! Quote:
As a fun aside, I ordered a mystery box of Nendoroid figures from GoodSmile's recent summer sale and I got Rikka Takarada! By far my favorite character from Gridman. Super lucky! |
I really enjoy this opening a lot.
I'm also enjoying Dynazenon a lot more than I thought. Both as a show and as a robot. The show continues it's slow pace but we're building to somewhere and we've actually got a proper meeting between our heroes and villains right at the end of Episode 2. I also enjoy the idea of training with the vehicles as well as just seeing them in more mundane situations, which is real nice. Gauma also continues to be a delight. Now onto the robot, seeing Dynazenon I took him at face value and just went "Hey cool robot" and didn't really seem too interested in how the fights would go. At the time I was looking at the whole robot and not noticing like the clear bits that seemed like they could be something else. But then we got the end of episode 1 where we get the cool recombination sequence into Dyna Dragon, and then showcasing in this episode how we've got a smaller robot in the center that can do different combinations with the different units. I'm really digging it, gives me a real big Super Robot/Brave vibe and I'm loving every second of it! |
I did like that they resolved the thing with Yume very quickly. Well, most of it the things with Yume anyway. I thought they were gonna keep it as a subplot that builds up to her configuration with Zenon or Yomogi, but it just sorta happens which is fine by me. Seems as though it's Chise that'll have that kind of reveal, with the opening signifying some sort of kaiju or some sorts. My guesses are she's kind of like Anti.
There's no reset thing that happens with every kaiju fight, so the battles have some weight since now they have to make sure the city doesn't actually get destroyed which is great. But I find it weird that the people and the characters themselves don't really care? There is that scene with Yume and Yomogi, but for the bystanders, it didn't seem like it was a big deal for them. Also, I really need a kit of Dynazenon. One that doesn't cost an arm lol. |

Man I like this show a lot so far, episode 2 was great!
I really enjoy how they aren't pointlessly dragging their feet with the character development, because there really isn't any need to avoid talking about Minami's sister or Yomogi being uncomfortable with the situation at hand. Gauma is the MVP so far though, he's so much fun. |
Dynazenon's been continuing to impress, really enjoying it so far. Getting Ultraman Mebius vibes with them seeing the aftermath of their first battle for some reason, maybe because of that whole "we're partially to blame for this" situation.
And I gotta say, I love how they're doing a toyetic approach with Dynazenon, and even having a throwback to the original Gridman's appearance sequences, which is a pure delight. I would love to get a figure of Dynazenon (and Gridman too, when I have money on hand). The characters have taken a step forward from the previous episode, unlike SSSS Gridman (not that I have any problem with Gridman) with the sort of training arc, and now we're meeting the villains, or at least who we're assuming to be the villains for now, whom I can't help but think Jyuuga looks like an evil Kamina. Also Gauma being such a bro is wonderful to see, easily my favorite character. And that opening is just magnificent, it's such a heroic song, with even the instruments sounding great. With all of the respect they've been putting into this and Godzilla: Singular Point, these shows are so far my favorite Anime this year, of course, there's still The World Ends With You (I know it's out, I just haven't started it yet) and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean coming out at some point to look forward to. |
So Gauma's pouch and the object that shined in episode 1. Clearly the mummy from Gridman, right?
|
This... this is FANTASTIC!
This year must be pretty lucky for me in regards to Toku -- Zenkaiger's been ticking every single one of my boxes, Tropical-Rouge has been fun to dive into, Saber... is not my favourite but it's doing some fun things, I've been enjoying going back and watching Showa seasons of Sentai and Rider for the first time in ever... and then THIS show comes along with the mission of just being damn entertaining and succeeding in every way with it. Like, I have to admit... I was slightly hesitant on getting in on this? I watched SSSS Gridman back when it was airing and I'd struggle to tell you much about it -- not even necessarily any fault of its own, just my tastes and the way I watch stuff has changed so much that I don't think it resonated me as much as it would have today. And then watching the original Gridman recently has not been grabbing me at all. So watching even just the first few minutes of Dynazenon here? Where it's all just quiet, mundane, normal life, just people being people and doing that in a way that's still engaging? Yeah, that's bringing back so many memories of SSSS Gridman for me and I'm falling in love! Yomogi especially is striking a chord for me, clearly a nice guy at his core but rendered pretty quiet and reserved due to how his life and striving for any form of independence weighs him down. It's the reading I'm getting at least, and it's a really nice, nuanced type of characterisation I don't see a lot. And then Dynazenon itself is. Uh. AWESOME?? I've rewatched that transformation sequence over and over and it just does not get old; it's sick in the best of ways and really makes me wonder if I should start watching more Mecha shows in general if I'm this into the one time a Toku hero is one. Bit of an interesting contrast to Gridman as well that Dynazenon here isn't an actual character talking to our cast, but I imagine there's a story behind that we'll get to eventually. Maybe? Honestly this show can do what it likes; it's worked well so far! |
Quote:
Gauma continues to be the highlight, dude's just eating crabs from the damn underpass and also decided to be a contributing member to society and went for a night cross guard shift. Also poor Yomogi, always just getting these weird guys showing up in front of him in his personal life causing everyone to scratch their heads. Will say it's nice to see that we already got to what I was expecting would be Episode 5. Which was the full team coming together to properly form Dynazenon instead of their prior attempts. I had assumed we'd have gotten like more alternate combinations first before getting to it, but hey that's nice. |
Is there anywhere to stream this other than Funimation?

Episode 3 was fantastic. I want to praise this show more but I feel like I would need to talk about everything that happened because everything was great. So far I do enjoy this a lot more than the Gridman anime and that's saying something, because Gridman was great also.

So yes, Gauma and his former comrades dying 5000 years ago, being revived, commanding "dragons" (Kaiju) and Gauma searching for his "princess" is all lore regarding the mummy that appeared in the OG Gridman episode which also marked Dyna Dragon’s first appearance as the "Dragon Cannon". Plus, the dragon statue Gauma had was in the mummy’s possession as well, and it had a sword with an emblem on its hilt, said emblem was hanging from the pouch that Gauma carried. There might be a deeper meaning to this eventually but for now it's a rather elaborate, clever and fun homage. If nothing else they took a random weekly story from the classic Gridman which happened to be the first appearance of what they turned into their main robot and made an entire plot out of it. |
Something I find odd is that almost none of the characters seem to really... care about the kaijus attacking. Except maybe Yume and Yomogi and even then the latter is still nonchalant about it or are more so mildly annoyed that the kaiju attack made the school late at announcements or something. Maybe they'll explain it, maybe they won't. I don't hate it, I don't like it, I just find it odd. Same goes for Mujina and the other guy with the "Can we leave after this?". Like, you guys are the villains, right?
But I have to give praise again to the same thing they did last episode, in that they didn't take long with Gauma explaining stuff. It wasn't prolonged for the sake of infighting and character drama, well it did for a bit, but Gauma was able to explain anyway putting it out of the way. Also, I like to believe the Kaiju Euginists(?) aren't the main baddies. For long, anyway. I imagine the thing with Chise or some other bad guy will show up. Lastly, I like the direction of the show is going. I think it's gonna be dependent on people's preferences, but I like how the show is kind of trying to be like actual tokusatsu where characters are talking normally instead of taking on le anime tropes, there's little to no music, there's some kind of ""awkward??"" or relaxing atmosphere to me whenever the characters are just talking to each other. It kind of feels like you just happened by onto some conversation and is just watching it intimately. I mean, that's how I feel, I guess. Not sure for others. |
calling it now:
Yume betrays the others to try & get her sister back; Chise gets the Dynawing in her place. There's FIVE main characters but Dyna only has four components. For some reason the producers decided "we need a spare..." |
I'd agree but given the opening and the fact that she finds one of those beads in like episode two... I feel like Chise has more going on with her than just being a simple "spare"
|
What a great episode, just keeps getting better and better! Also, I have to clear up something I said last week about the character named Juuga, who I mixed up with the redhead, I forgot their names and mixed them up, so sorry about that. I'll stand by what I said about him being like an evil Kamina, I really enjoyed watching him, not sure why, probably because I like crazy villains like that.
Speaking of Kamina, Gauma basically used Gurren Lagann logic for combing, "Our hearts as one!" made my day, love that guy, he even got a job! The characters have been taking steps every episode, from their Dynazenon training, to building up their bonds, and learning more about the bizarre circumstances occurring, and it's been nice to watch. I didn't expect the Kaiju Euginists to be villains based on the trailers, I thought they were like the previous owners of Dynazenon, and seeing this episode, I wonder if they're not the true villains. After all, there's that one scene in the opening with Chise, though that may just be misleading. Also, fun little easter egg, 721, which appeared in SSSS Gridman, which might be a reference to Ultraseven 21. Quote:

Would like to add the creators stated that the midair manuever Dynazenon does is a nod to Ultraman Taro and his Swallow Kick.
|
Oh you know also, what's with Episode 3's of SSSS shows and our heroes doing really cool grab maneuvers?
Like Max Gridman landing on Anti's back while grounding himself and using the boosters on his massive arms to pick Anti up and plant him into the ground. And then Dynazenon just grabs the Kaiju with it's legs and throws itself forward, does a handstand and just flings the Kaiju away. |
Caught up to episode 2.
Like what Reiei mentioned, it's interesting to see how oddly "chill" the everyone is about the sudden appearance of the Kaiju and the damage being caused during the battles. I assume it might be because the show's "other shoe" hasn't dropped yet, and there's possibly something going on that the characters already know about but we as the audience don't. Although, this idea mostly stems from the fact that every time a character says "Kaiju" it's in italics rather than just a simple capitalization. Other than that, I didn't see anyone else mention this, but I found it interesting that all the protags aside from Gauma have someone either dead/gone from their life: Yume's sister died. Yomogi's dad is straight up never talked about. Koyomi and Chise briefly talk about there being a memorial they apparently need to attend next week (in episode 1). Admittedly, this is rather basic level analysis, especially when the very premise for this show's SSSS is "Scarred Souls Shine like Stars", but it still felt important to point out. |

But Yume definitely will pick up on the whole resurrection thing; I also expect that there will be an episode in the future were she goes crazy over the idea which causes tension between the team. Quote:
|
A theory a friend and I have is that Yume's sister may have died in a prior kaiju attack during the events of SSSS.Gridman.
Mainly because we don't know how she died (afaik so far) and the subtle reuse of certain backdrops and scenes from Gridman most likely signifying that this is the computer world still, just after the events of the first series. Not to mention how Yume seems to act when encountering kaiju and looking over the wreckage their battles leave behind. It's not overt, but things like her prolonged silence at the end of their first battle and how she looks over the destroyed buildings and such in episode 2 makes you think... |
Quote:
All we know about her death so far is that when Yume was in elementary school, her sister accidentally died on the Flood Gate we see Yume standing on in ep 1. There's also this importance on September 21st, as the day was marked as "Recital" on the calendar in her sister's room, and we hear her invite Yume to come. But none of this information actually contradicts your theory. |
I will say I saw some comparisons of the various re-used shots we've seen so far in Dynazenon from Gridman. And a lot of people noticed the lighting is different, whether that just means they improved upon them to make em just a bit different, or if that means we aren't in computer world this time... who's to say. We'll just have to keep watching.
Something I sorta realized we've yet to really mention at least I don't think we've mentioned it yet. Kanae the "life of the chorus club" as it were. If you mix the letters around what do you get? Akane. |
They could obviously have SSSS. Dynazenon be set in the same computer world as SSSS. Gridman, but I think that would be kind of lame.
If anything I would expect that this time it's actually set in the real world and we will meet older versions of the OG Gridman cast. Like, when Trigger first made their Gridman tribute short which kickstarted this whole thing it starred a redeemed Takeshi (the human bad guy from Gridman) in his adult years, and when the real world is attacked by giant monsters he transforms into Gridman Sigma to fight them. Gridman Sigma is the younger brother of Gridman, and was featured in a novel, but the concept behind him came from an unused idea for Gridman's last batch of episodes were Takeshi would become an evil clone of Gridman, called "Kahn Knight" before being redeemed and adopting the alias of Grid Knight. Now, Grid Knight we already got in anime form, but while he is an evil clone of Gridman (sort of), Takeshi is not involved. So I kind of feel like that when this show progresses, both a Kahn Digifier / Alex Kerib villain might come forward and Takeshi will back up Dynazenon as Gridman Sigma. |
Interesting theories going on here, as much as I hate to debunk them, I don't think they'll happen. Since when they first announced Dynazenon, they said it was not a season 2 or sequel to SSSS Gridman, so I kind of doubt they'll bring in any of those characters. If anything, this might be the "same" computer world, since Gridman Universe is in the title.
But the original Gridman might be an exception, given how much this series likes to call back to it. |
Well yeah, it's not a second season or sequel to SSSS.Gridman, but it being labeled as being in the Gridman universe doesn't mean it can't use moments or characters from it.
That story is done, but those characters can still appear in some for whether it'd be a one-off cameo or as a supporting role or what have you. As for which world this takes place in, you can make just as much an argument for it being in the real world as you can the virtual. The reused backdrops could be a reference to locations Akane recreated in the virtual world herself and the places we see here are the real locations. The Kanae dying in a kaiju attack theory can fit as well if they're rolling their Gridman tribute short into this canon and Takeshi does exist as Gridman Sigma, in which case a battle between him and a kaiju could have caused Kanae's death at the floodgate. Plus the fact that Gauma is most likely a reborn mummy from the OG series would also fit that unless they come up with some explanation about him and the eugenicists being "reborn" into the virtual world. Who knows really. All depends on where the story goes, but it's fun to theorize based on how the last series utilized its setting and history. |
Quote:
But knowing Trigger they will make it happen and it will be glorious. |
Quote:
But anyway, as I said before, these theories are really interesting given what little we know of the show. |
Yomogi going back-to-basics with Dyna Soldier training, but the one thing that can mess with a guys focus is knowing your crush isn't there to watch. Well, that and a cold ;).
Yume is learning that her sister was actually pretty cheerful, just serious and earnest when it came to choir, and now she's off to find a guy with video of the choir and her sister. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised Yomogi assumed she was meeting guy having been there when she asked about her sister, but I guess when you like someone that's just where your mind goes :p. Ha! Yomogi's boss got him to admit he might like Yume. And she's also asking Koyomi out. Kind of curious what her deal is . I can't believe one of the Kaiju Eugenecists pulled an exchange student gag to get in with the kids, but I guess this is what happens when you use your Mecha for mundane stuff like going to school :uhoh:. So the Kaiju Eugenecists don't create Kaiju, they are naturally born from the unsaid will of the people, they just control them and try to create a world where Kaiju are needed...but how is that obtained with all the death and destruction :eyebrow:? Gauma may have jumped the gun and attacked Sizumu, losing his job, but he's still a pretty solid wingman for Yomogi, asking Yume to check up on him :). Chise's been ready to take over as a back up pilot this whole time, to the point of jumping in Dyna Striker waiting for the opportunity, and finally gets a chance when they need someone else to take over. Although being great with video games doesn't instantly make you a master of piloting a Mecha as she kind of fumbles around (although at least she can move, which Yomogi couldn't). I wonder if she'll still be the backup for Dyna Soldier moving forward? How serious was that? Good thing Koyomi was there to save his cousin though :eyespin:. So miss thighs-and-butt of the Eugenecists is named Mujina, huh? Good to know:D. Her Kaiju having dimension-splitting powers was cool, even if it couldn't handle the overwhelming power of Dynazenon  I don't know what was more hilarious, Yomogi coughing through the epic Dynazenon combining lines or Yume doing "something beam" because she doesn't know the name of the attacks like Gauma does. So the redhead Eugenecist is the one who seems most fervently into destroying Dynazenon, to the point of backseat Kaiju piloting, and the one who keeps nearly dying. Well, good news is Yomogi threw it out there that he wants to help Yume on her quest to learn more about her sister, so he can better get to know her in the process. Bad news...he got her sick. All that talk and it's finally Yume who catches it. |
Not much to say other than. Remember Kids: Don't go around everywhere if you have a cold, especially if you pilot a mecha. Cause otherwise your teammates might catch it.
Will say I enjoy how chill and mundane the Kaiju Eugenecists are, they're just waltzing around, chilling and casually waiting for their next Kaiju to take over. Well... most of them anyway. Onija looks like he's ready to go at all times of the day from how pumped he is compared to the rest of them. |
A rather enjoyable episode this week, which kind of reminds me of a typical Tokusatsu episode you get every once in a while, so props to Trigger.
I love how the Kaiju Eugenicists don't go out of their way to be evil, as if you could have a show with them as the main characters and it would just fit, because they seem to live normal lives like our heroes, which is a really nice detail. Looks like Chise has the potential to be a pilot, probably because she was present during Dynazenon's first appearance, either that, there's what we've all been speculating that there might be more to her than meets the eye. And this weeks' Kaiju reminds me of Gavadon from the original Ultraman, which was a lot of fun. Really loving how they've been doing these series. Now if only there was a cheaper way to get a Dynazenon figure... |
