TOKU HD to air Kamen Rider Agito
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/pre...-agito/.165735
Starting November 3rd, TOKU HD will begin airing the second Heisei Kamen Rider series: Kamen Rider Agito. It will mark the first time the show will be available in the US. Judging from the glaring typo in the press release, I feel like we can expect TOKU's usual quality when it comes to its release. |
Wait... what?
Okay this is unexpected. Given how Tokushoutsu was giving us all the Ultraman I assumed TOKU HD was just gonna quiet down and do nothing. Was not expecting this. |
Interesting. I would've preferred Tokushoutsu/Tubi, but it's good to see more Kamen Rider being made available. That's 3 shows in one year!
|
Annoyed it's on TOKU. They're like Shout Factory/TokuShoutsu but with way less accessibility (no Roku, no consoles, etc) and it's a paid service (though it is cheap).
But hey, I'm Ready to go, count zero! Legally Streaming Agito! |

That's even worse because that has even more limited accessibility. Hell, I don't have any means to access that channel.
|
I don't like making assumptions but like, just the timing on this and it being Toku HD
Anyone else feel like this is a spite grab? Like Tokushoutsu's big thing when starting up was "We have Kamen Rider 1971" and then later Kuuga with the Heisei Generations Forever movie also following. And then they make the announcement they're acquiring streaming stuff for Ultraman. A lot of stuff that was listed in the press release also being on Toku HD. Just the fact that they did it so close to November when Ultraman's gonna start streaming... and also the fact that they grabbed Rider which we know they haven't had before. I don't know it just seems a bit sus. |
So...Agito is up on WatchToku (their on demand service). Just the first 6 episodes though.

Man, would it kill somebody to put these out on blu-ray sets instead of just streaming services?
|
From what I heard online the subs apparently aren't too great. I think they're machine translated?
|
The only description I've found of the subtitles so far is this.
"So I watched the first ep of Kamen Rider Agito on Toku HD and uhhhh the subs leave something to be desired. The translation is serviceable but definitely was done in a single pass. The thing is it's done in a cc style so actions and character names appear and it's distracting. Like it's especially weird when they do it for characters who don't have names or characters whom you're not supposed to know their identity yet. I have no idea why they choose to do the subs this way." https://twitter.com/JetJagg/status/1324807820919930884 That does not sound very good. |
JetJagg took some screenshots of the subs showing just how awful they are. Don't give TOKUHD money for this.

Oh it's a lot more than Honshin, Honshin is the meme made out of the entire mess.
From what I heard the main gripe is it reads like someone just ripped a script that was given to them onto the subtitles. So you'll have Character Name: Whatever they say And just a whole bunch of like grammar stuff too from what I heard. It does not seem on glance, by any means on par with the 1971 and Kuuga releases. There's a reason a lot of people are going "Wtf Team Rider?" when it comes to them promoting it. Also I don't like the mentality of because something is official we have to support it, especially when it comes to TOKU, they're not the best bunch when it comes to this stuff. Just because it's an official release, does not mean it's good. Like I'll be honest, I want to support stuff like this but also I long for like actual quality. Like as an example sure I'll laugh at the Gridman subs for like a minute or two, but then I sorta stare at my desk and go "This could be so much better..." because they should do better and we shouldn't force ourselves to consume something bad in order to show our support. |
Yeah, sorry; but I've far more reason to be apprehensive of a bad job like this than grateful -- there's this attitude I think of treating any official sub like it's a net positive, when a bad job will more than likely contribute to us not getting official subs anymore. They'll look at the lack of traffic and attention and say "well clearly there's no audience for Kamen Rider in the west", when what they've given us is a limited stream of a Gaim movie, 2 episodes of a season and this which has the worst friggin' subs since Gridman.
I know this is gone off onto another topic now, but they need to put out quality stuff to keep people interested and hence for us to keep getting subs. I'm going to be critical when things like this come around. |

What matters is numbers, and just watching stuff and giving them money tells the suits "Oh okay they'll just eat anything we fucking plate them." This is why certain game companies get away with heinous shit because you're actively giving them money and that's what matters, at the end of the day they look at the numbers. If they realize they can half ass shit and people will watch it, they'll do it. Kamen Rider isn't excluded from this, at the end of the day Kamen Rider is there to make money from kids in Japan, not entertain adults in the west. |
It's a mixed bag honestly. On the one hand, if we watch regardless, it gives the impression they can crap out whatever and we'll just take it. On the other, if we don't, then typically company execs simply think "Oh well clearly they just don't like [X]" It's very rare that trying to do better a second time around is their first idea. The best you can do in situations like these is make your displeasure heard on places higher ups actually listen to like social media, popular hashtags, etc.

Call me cynical, but I've always felt Team Kamen Rider exists only for Toei to sell KR toys in the US and aren't as interested in the shows themselves. Feels like every time I see Team Kamen Rider involved with a screening, it's mostly an excuse to give away belts or figures.
Like, I get that the toys are where KR gets money, but again, you can't help but draw comparisons to how Tsuburaya has been handling Ultraman. There is an actual concerted effort from them to get ALL of Ultraman available worldwide with mostly high quality subtitles and even dubs. So, I mean, as much as I'd love to see more KR available in the West, it's become clear that Toei's efforts are lacking. New episodes of Ultraman Z were pulling in over 1 million views, and that simulcast made that series a legitimate hit. |
