Save Me From My Crushing Misery By Recommending Cartoons!
Quote:
I am, as you may have guessed, heavily invested in Evangelion, so I guess I'm always looking for something that feels like that, or is complimentary to that? Therefore, in short order, I guess examples of the kind of shows/comics I have previously enjoyed and the kind of show I am searching for that might evoke the spirit of such things would be:
Obviously, you already know of my fondness for Sailor Moon, and you can assume given how readily I have dated myself with my interests that I have tremendous love for Macross, Dragonball, Gatchaman, Devilman, that sort of thing, but I fear if something doesn't change, I'm going to sit here watching the openings of old cartoons I have already seen all evening and... it would be nice to do something more productive? So, please, recommend away! Surprise me! Please? |
Did you ever watch Patlabor by chance? I only came to know about it because someone showed me the robot designs and I though "Hey, that looks cool", and I feel like not that many people watched it.
The story behind the project is already a topic interesting enough in of itself, it's basically that a bunch of very creative people from Japan were fed up that they had to work on someone else’s property or change their creative vision to follow broadcast directions. So they formed their own studio with the intent that everything they create is 100% theirs and they only do what they want to. Patlabor is a project from this studio. The story is set in the faraway future of 1999 (dear lord), during this time global warming has raised the global sea levels drastically and massive chunks of Japan are lost to it. Japanese government decides on a project to build giant constructs that allow the sunken land to be reclaimed, to build these giant constructions they invent mecha called "Labors" which are piloted by workers. Our main plot follows a police division of losers and outcasts that fight Labor crime, criminals who use the Labors for evil. They pilot their own Patrol Labors or “Patlabors” for short. What makes this franchise awesome are extraordinary great characters, clever plots and fun mecha action on top of it all. Sometimes it’s very deep in its plot and imagery, sometimes it’s a bubbly and fun character anime, but all of it is balanced to perfection. The only thing you should know before you start is that this franchise is made out of 3 different media: A TV anime, 2 OVA series and 3 movies. All feature the same characters and basic setup, but the anime and one OVA series takes place in a different universe than the other OVA's and movies. The anime is a bit more "standard", it runs for about 40-50 episodes and features more weekly stories, but also overarching plots that aren’t found elsewhere. An OVA series called "The New Files" serves as a sequel of sorts to the series. Then there's an OVA series called "The Early Days" which basically starts from zero, introduces all the characters anew and features new stories to warm you up to this universe. These stories are then followed by the movies. And here in lies something truly great, because I myself think the first Patlabor movie is a hidden gem. It's is truly fantastic. But, it does require you to know the characters for full effect. So I would recommend either trying to watch the "The Early Days" OVA series and then head for the movies. Or, if you want to watch a masterpiece right away and don’t care about learning the characters on the go, watch the movie and then the OVAs after. And if all of that isn't enough and you need more - then watch the TV anime and its OVA's. I’ll post a trailer for the movie and the OVA that takes place in the same universe. Just from the vastly different tone of each you can tell what makes this franchise so unique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2kynMzTqu4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMpI_bc3LrI |
My time has come *cracks knuckles*
Mahou Shojou Madoka Magica is basically if Evangelion had magical girls instead of robots. That's my number 1 suggestion. But please don't look anything else up about it - the less you know going in, the better. Also, look into: Space Runaway Ideon Invincible Super-man Zambot 3 Martian Successor Nadesico Mobile Suit Gundam + Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (but you've seen Turn A, so I assume you've seen these as well) Serial Experiments Lain Yuki Yuna Is A Hero Ghost in the Shell Kaiba Texhnolyze Paranoia Agent Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Tatami Galaxy Night is Short, Walk on Girl RahXephon Eureka 7 Aim for the Ace! Bokurano Perfect Blue Paprika Psycho-Pass Ergo Proxy Shin Getter Robo The Garden of Sinners Wonder Egg Priority Made in Abyss ...that should be enough to get you started. Hopefully there's some in there that you haven't seen yet. I can go into why I suggested something too, if you'd like. |

Thank you for reminding me of this and for your comment! It was absolutely great to read all the detail you crammed in there and I feel super excited about re-connecting with this world now! You've saved my evening!! Quote:
I remember being really impressed with Madoka when I saw it, but I've always held it at arms length for some reason, mostly because I worry about what deconstructing magical girl stories means for the wider acceptance of the genre, but I could certainly do with revisiting that, and also— Quote:
It's so lovely to have a chance to talk to someone else who knows the series, because no one in the world seems to want to talk to me about this... possibly because I scare them with my enthusiasm, hahah. |

I can stomach a lot of stuff, but the scene in which that one character gets poisoned and the other tries to save her made me so physically uncomfortable that I almost threw up. There’s some straight up nightmare fuel later as well but it never made me as uneasy as the poison scene. Because that stuff got real way too quickly. Quote:
Haven’t seen it anywhere for streaming either. The US and UK might be in more luck though, I think there was an "Ultimate" package which literally included everything and you have more streaming services so someone may have it? The only thing that seems readily available is a live-action adaption, most likely because it sucks. |
I would recommend:
Appleseed Area 81 Bubblegum Crisis (Original OVA) Blazing Transfer Student Galaxy Express 999 Hi-Speed Jecy Haibane Renmei Monster Tekkeon Kinkreet Ping Pong: The Animation Silent Mobius Wolf's Rain |

It seems like the series only covers the first 4-ish volumes of the manga. I take it that the series continues to get better as it goes on? Quote:

In fact, that whole arc, at the end of that arc, I burst into tears—like genuinely ugly crying, push-your-face-into-a-cat-to-feel-the-reassurance-of-another-living-creature's-closeness crying. Quote:
Thank you for replying also! I should have known you'd be able to second-guess my taste so easily with Guyver in your name and Devilman in your sig, haha. |
I'm not a big anime guy nor am I a big cartoon connoisseur compared to a lot of people, so these might be like the most obvious and seen picks. But like when it comes to Mecha related stuff I've gotta always shout out:
Megas XLR and Big O Honorable Mention goes to Brave Exkaiser, the first and father of the Brave Series which you might know better as the one which brought out GaoGaiGar. And also a franchise of what Trigger likes to reference quite a bit when it comes to Gridman Universe. It's not like, the most amazing show, it's a very simple premise, and very transformers-like, but it's a real fun show and I absolutely love it's opening. Also I will take the time to always go for the meme and say Watch Senki Zesshou Symphogear. It's like, mecha, magical girl, and toku all combined into one package. It ain't perfect, but it's very enjoyable, at least it was for me. This is my contribution, not much, because there's already a lot of good suggestions honestly. And like I said, I don't watch anime that much. Heck I've tried to do a Brave Series Marathon and rewatch Bleach only to just not be able to do so. Granted I think that's just me wanting to write consuming my life, but yeah. This is all I've got. |

Anime recommendations? *processing*
I don't think I've got any that would suit your tastes I'm afraid. I happen to be a more shounen kind of guy, valuing entertainment over pretty much all else. I've got enough depression in my life so I don't tend to lean towards stuff like Evangelion (Of course, I still watched it). My older siblings would probably know of more, since I'll be real here, I don't have a very big knowledge when it comes to Anime, and I'll refrain from throwing out anything you might not be quite into like JoJo or One Punch Man, and everything else people are throwing out here are probably better choices than what I have under my belt. Haven't seen Patlabor but have been curious, same with Guyver. Have heard stuff about Symphogear, and I'll admit the collaboration costumes with Godzilla, Gamera, SSSS. Gridman, and the Manga/Netflix Ultraman look pretty neat, don't know if I'll see that anytime soon, got enough shows this season as it is already, I've yet to see the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie, Zero-One: RealxTime, and all of the Kamen Rider episodes on the TTW channel. |
Reideen the Superior was from the looks of it pretty much Sunrise's attempt at try and corner both bishounen and henshin hero market in 1996 alongside Dagwon by ditching the titular robot from the source material and making boybands transforming superheroes(of course the latter part of the show brought back the titular robot as a cosmic horror of sorts). In layman's terms the show is the answer to the question, "WHAT IF A 1990s POP IDOL BAND AND A VISUAL KEI BAND TRANSFORMED AND DUKED IT OUT WITH EACH OTHER". :lolol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CbrQeBhsu4 Sonic Soldier Borgman is a tale of three grade school teachers who are in actuality cyborg soldiers fighting monsters. Kia Asamiya was the character designer and this is also the show I am bugging DreamSword to watch. :lolol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ked2W73bRrY Transformers Masterforce is the show that answers the million dollar question, "WHAT IF THE TRANSFORMERS WERE POWER RANGERS". Nuff said. *mic drop* :lolol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX_8tobdiMc |
*insert anime is not cartoon controversy here*
:lolol Jokes aside I recommend Transformers Prime, aka one of the best Transformers shows ever. Great writing, characterisation, world-building, etc. |
Gosh, you guys really delivered here, thank you all!

Again, thank you all for commenting! I think I have the rest of the year filled now! I'm really excited to actually watch all this stuff and I can't thank you all enough!! |
Yes! I think XDU was the mobile app game! Does a lot of crossovers every once in a while. One was SSSS Gridman and recently Saint Seiya!

And then just for giggles, imma recommend Schwarzesmarken. I'm not too fond of it myself, but is still a very interesting watch. And also Spec Ops Asuka. Just basically some with some grit in it. I personally found the last very cool, more so cuz I read the manga. https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/p...aken_promo.jpg https://www.anime-planet.com/images/...ka-11288-1.jpg |

It's also how I got into Symphogear because they did a special promotion deal with Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll put up Season's 1, G, and GX on Youtube so you could marathon it. It was neat. And then I watched AXZ and XV on Crunchyroll after I was done with those. Quote:

It just has that fun old Toku Feel where you've got this alien Exkaiser learning about various things about Earth and that ties into the plot of the episode. And usually that plot is the villains be going after various objects that make themselves known to them. Whether it be stuff like Super Fire Trucks, a high tech plane to stuff like... stealing anything that helps you cool off in summer like ice cream and beer... or even, at one point... cigarettes. :lol It's a real fun show and it has a great Opening that's a bop that I'm required to link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtGUDUGSm18 |

It is not based on a canceled Transformers series; its origins are however tied to Transformers. After "Transforms Victory" ended the series was on all all-time low in popularity, Transformers had long ended in the US and one last attempt at reviving the brand, an OVA called "Transformers Zone" was ultimately cancelled. After that Takara sought out a partnership with Sunrise to develop a new franchise to market toys with, that was what would become Brave. It still features transforming robots but is not related to Transformers directly, although since Takara owned the rights they did remold and/or repaint a few Transformers toys and sold them under the Brave banner. I have only seen two Brave shows; they are pretty good but ultimately a bit more on the generic side. But when you crave for some 90’s super robot anime this hits the spot. |
There we go! That's what it was, thanks for clarifying.

And what was I thinking not recommending Tekkaman Blade.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prbMFYuLtC4 This was done by the same studio that brought us Gatchaman or Battle Of The Planets for the English-speaking fans of the disco era. The protagonist was voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa aka Torin from Kyoryuger and the heroine was voiced by Rei Ayanami herself Megumi Hayashibara. And the archnemesis was Dio Brando. :lolol |

I never knew Tekkaman was by Inoue! Once again, the man saves himself from my threats to burn down his house. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is3h8iV8Y20 And reason I say disco era is because 1970s. :lolol But back to Jushin Liger, yes this was what inspired the pro-wrestler which kinda continued on as a wrestling persona after the anime like Tiger Mask. |
