What Are You Watching? (Movie Edition)
I think the title speaks for itself. Now for my opinions on Iron Man 3.
Non-spoiler: AWESOME! Spoiler: I'm surprised that no one has complained about the Mandarin being an actor feeding his drug addiction. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. The climax was superb, with ~35 armors coming together to fight the good fight. Pepper not being dead was something I'm pretty sure everyone saw coming, but I do like the twist in which she saves Tony for a change. But by far the most tragic moment in the entire movie was when they bombed Tony's house. Not because of all of the armors being blown up; I was left wondering BUT WHAT ABOUT DUMMY?! Dummy... will live. I also like to think that the Mark V wasn't blown up by the Clean Slate protocol or the Mandarin, but rather was trying to catch up with the other armors when they were on their way to save Tony, given the Mark V's lack of flight. Overall, I liked it, especially the post-credits scene. |
Man, I really want to see it. Not reading spoilers 'til I do.
So, was it better than Iron Man 2? |

Now, if only I can get to a theater to see it... |
I saw Iron Man 3 yesterday too. I thought it was alright at best, but probably my least favourite of the Marvel Cinematic universe films thus far.
Loved the detailed character study of Stark and the after effects of the Avengers but I'm one of those people that hated the Mandarin twist. I have no qualms with Killian being the Mandarin, but there could have been a better way to do it. I don't feel like everything should be like the comics, but to introduce to comic-esque Mandarin and have him seem like a legitimate threat, only to become a huge joke just felt like a massive slap in the face to anyone excited to see the character. It also meant yet ANOTHER IM film where the villain is a businessman manipulating terrorism for profit. |
Watching The Evil Dead again actually made me realise the remake was a lot better than I gave it credit for. The Evil Dead may be much scarier but at least the remake had actual characters and plotting...
|
Just came back from Star Trek: Into Darkness. Brilliant film, and going into it with no spoilers made it even more satisfying. Benedict Cumberbatch just shines in it.
|
Right now i'm watching Batman beyond return of the Joker.
|
So I just watched Evil Dead II, closely, with my critic cap on and my God it didn't hold up all that well at all.
|
I, too, absolutely loved Iron Man 3. Everything about it worked perfectly for me. I rank it as my favorite of the three films.
I'll be trying to go see Star Trek Into Darkness next week with my wife and cousin, if we can make our schedules match up. |
Tonight, I'll be watching Marebito.
|
Saw Iron Man 3 today. Pretty amazing. Can someone just spoil the post-credits scene? We left before it showed because we thought there wasn't gonna be one.

Suffered through The (not so) Great Gatsby the other day. It was awful due to the ADD editing and the god awful insulting rap music. Whomever thought putting rap music in a movie that takes place during the 20s was a ****ing retard and should have their movie making license revoked.

That side, I enjoyed the novella, and the movie was pretty much a great interpretation of it from what I can recall. |
Watched Aftershock the other day and it's easily in my top ten list of worst films of all time. Utterly disgusting trash.
|
Watched Star Trek Into Darkness over the weekend, and it was simply amazing. Like ZeoRangerV I went in without spoilers and was absolutely floored.
Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the gems of this generation, but practically everyone else shined in the movie, especially the two main actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock respectively. While I liked Quinto in the 2009 movie, I still had reservations, but in this movie he was so good that now he IS effectively Spock for me. I doubt any other modern actor could channel Spock so well. I watched Iron Man 3 the week before and while it wasn't the best Marvel Cinematic movie I've seen, it was definitely the high point of the Iron Man movies. Aldrich Killian is definitely the most frightening, the most dangerous and ultimately, the most personal villain Iron Man has had in the movies. The Mandarin twist was disappointing, but it was such a surprising twist I really don't know what to feel about it. On one hand I was annoyed, but on the other I thought it was absolutely brilliant. |

I persoanlly thought iron man 3 was/is the best Marvel film so far. I loved the twist, it's clever and I feel that a lot of people are possibly missing the point.
To me they had to make Trevor into such a joke to show how he couldn't have planned any of it and that it was Killian's doing. As Killian says, he's been the Mandarin all along, Trevor is just a magic trick, an illusion to throw Tony off. Heck if he had time and wasn't so concerned with preserving his image he would of probably donned the cloak and everything too (hence his dragon tattoos) To me he was the perfect mandarin minus the magic, he's every opposite to Tony. His tech controls him and can kill him, Tony's saves him and he controls it. He breaks Tony down to virtually nothing, whilst hiding in the shadows, Tony is of course very out in the open. Etc. etc. Just my two cents, think a lot of people are basing it on image alone. |
I think I still slightly favor Avengers to Iron Man 3, if only because the team dynamic was done so well, and I really liked having Steve and Loki in the film.
My top 3 favorite Marvel films are, in order: Avengers IM3 Captain America/Iron Man |
I haven't seen Iron Man 3 yet but I reckon my top Marvel Studio film would be Thor.
|
I'd still place the first Iron Man at the top of my Marvel Studios film, undoubtedly.

I saw the Walker Brothers' review of the film. One of their points bothered me.
Throughout the review they kept claiming that Tony was making a lot of stupid, emotionally-fueled decisions and having panic attacks because he feared that he would lose Pepper. However, they're taking Tony's words at surface value, and not paying much heed to the continuity of the films. The reason that Tony was behaving the way he was in Iron Man 3 was because of post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychology Today claims and justifies that Tony's near-death experience in The Avengers in which he accepted the fact that he would die, only to find that he did live. In the previous Iron Man movies, Tony was close to death, but he always strived to survive. As such, the trauma inflicted by this event rendered him with PTSD. Because of this, he was not able to perform as he normally would, being unable to express emotions he would normally be able to do with ease; suffering from insomnia and attacks; and making stupid decisions. Lesson learned: KRX does not approve of medical fallacies. |
My favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is Avengers, but Thor comes in second. I loved Thor a lot, it really woke me up to the potential of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the film was a ton of fun. I am definitely anticipating Thor 2 the upcoming sequels.

It just has a huge heart and an even bigger imagination and although it may not be as huge or as explosive than Avengers, the general insanity of Thor, in my mind, makes it the most fun. I watch it pretty regularly now and have fun every time. |

With Thor: The Dark World expanding on the Asgardian mythology, I can hardly wait! |

Considering the ARE Marvel Studios they took quite a few liberties with the stories and characters. |

Straightest to which story and version of the character? The whole thing played out like someone read the first issue of the Ultimates and a back issue of Captain America from the 40s and kinda mashed it together. I enjoyed the film but from an adaptation stand point I found it a mess. |
Yes the film combined elements or the original and Ultimate origins, but both of those are still pretty similar and combined still tell the same story.
Thor on the other hand dropped the origin of either version of the character apart from having to go to Earth. He didn't have to live life as a crippled doctor or a psychiatric nurse, or even have to attempt living a double life. Like I said I'm not denying it worked for the film, but I wouldn't call it straight. |

They largely focused on Kirby's general insanity really, with a few changes made here and there. |
I honestly liked Thor. It wasn't the best out of the Avenger movies, but it wasn't horrible.
