I think Flashman fans will love what they see in this episode. Who would have thought that they would be ROLLING VULCANING THE ENEMIES AND EVEN WAS DETAIL ORIENTED TO THE POINT WHERE THEY GOT THE YELLOW RANGER TO TARGET THE ENEMIES BEFORE FIRING.:lolol
|
Wow, four Gears used in this episode, including my favorite 80s and second favorite 90s Sentai! Kakuranger Gear does as the Sentai's name implies and hides the Rangers, a simple yet effective escape power. Flashman Gear gets to represent all the team cannons in Sentai history, complete with the Yellow Ranger being critical to making it work! I love that!
This is partially a Yellow focus as well, so it's fitting and unexpected that the regular version of the Gaoranger Gear shows up here to give Gaon and the other Kikainoid Rangers a wild boost. I haven't watched Goranger but I know their iconic finisher inspired the Vulcan Ball from Sun Vulcan. Considering the gears in Stacey's DNA when he morphs in to Stacaesar (that scene is like Emu from Kamen Rider EX-Aid mutating whenever he gets a new power-up) and how he identifies as half-human, my current theory is that he's actually Kaito's half-brother. Stacaesar's powers are so bad*ss and OP! While Basco could only summon copies of Rangers as long as he possessed their keys, Stacaesar can summon copies of whole teams of Rangers and the mecha from the splintered universes that power his Dark Gears! Even though he's about to get Ursa Sky Blued next episode, I don't think my excitement over him is going to wear out so quickly! Stacey's status as an ambiguously human villain is a smart way to challenge Gaon's ideals. Gaon joined the Zenkaigers to fight those evil Kikainoids under Tojitendo and protect the humans. But now there's a human on Tojitendo's side, which complicates things. It's the concept that good and evil can exist equally in both Kikainoids and also humans. Gaon's prejudice stops him from seeing that, although it was probably cowardly of Juran to attack Stacey out of suit, since that's what caused the civilians to become afraid of him in the first episode, when he showed aggression. Gaon's decision to let the human Rangers fight each other is a good way to get around this internal conflict for now, but I think this is going to be brought up again, since Gaon's philosophy of humans good Kikainoids bad isn't a sustainable one for a heroic character to maintain. |

What also blew my mind was when the robots were being summoned their respective DX toy box was featured like it was a portal. THAT is some fan service right there. |

Seeing the mech being summoned literally straight from their original boxes had me dying. I love it! :lol
I found it kind of cool that Flashman represented the team cannon, though it makes me curious to see if they could use other gears for different effects. This episode had so much going on, wow. We also got to see a ton of different gears in action. I figured if Hurricanger triggered the shadow dance, that Kakuranger would give them a vanishing technique. Goranger giving the Goranger Hurricane was also obvious. Kinda hoping the Gaoranger gear would've given them something a little more flashy, though. Stacey is kinda interesting. I can see glimpses of a sympathetic story in play, so maybe he might end up turning good. Who knows. Gaon is also easily digging that hole deeper as the worst character. Wonder if they'll manage to make him even somewhat likable by the end :lol |

Staceaser kind of reminds me of that parody sentai Akibaranger a bit with the top of the helmet.

Gonna be honest, Gaon is my least favorite of the Zenkaigers, this episode only furthering it for me.
It's no secret Gaon is biased with his preference with humans over kikainoids, but this episode was pretty intolerable to me, especially the beginning part. And I'm not thoroughly satisfied with how they resolve it, too, prolly cuz it has to share focus with Stacy and would probably sidelined later for not-Gokai Gold. Zyuran brings up a lot of points I agree with and I'm not sure it was satisfactory to me that it was 'resolved' with the old lady (forgot her name lol) saying "He trusts you, cuz he's Kikainoid too." and Kaito's "Oh, you really think them as your comrades then!" Gaon's whole bias thing gets sidelined to make it so it's about him protecting Stacy and failing to fight the Gorangers, when I think it should've been more about why he's such pain towards other Kikainoids. Well, I liked the episode anyway still. Just didn't like Gaon here. Maybe there's something I'm not getting, or maybe they'll touch up on this later, cuz EP 7 is still an early number, but it's just what I felt. |
This is the second coming of Gokaiger in terms on how much anniversary stuff is in there.
I got to admit, I got a good chuckle of the mechas being summoned with their DX toy boxes in the background. Makes me think Rider's 50th Anniversary show will downplay the anniversary aspects to not overshadow this shows. |

Stacaesar. Stacaesar. So this is basically a show made by geniuses, yeah? At the very least, they sure know how to keep me entertained. So, when I say I knew what this one would be about going in, it then shouldn't be surprising to hear I was looking forward to it. Everything about Stacey is pretty much exactly what I want out of a toku show, and everything about Stacaesar is more than I could've ever hoped for from Zenkaiger. A cool dark mirror counterpart to the protagonist? What if he has some intriguing backstory and motivations shrouded in mystery? What if he has a complex relationship to the other villains to further the drama? What if they do that thing where the hero and the villain get to meet each other before they realize they're enemies and build a fun interpersonal dynamic? What if we get some sick rival fight action in there? Hey, what if we got all of this in one episode, and then this dude was also a gloriously retro Battle Japan homage who summons mint-in-box giant robots to do his bidding? They knocked this introduction out of the park. I'm almost as excited to be talking about this guy for episodes to come as I am Magine, and that's really saying something if you've seen how embarrassingly passionate I am about Magine! I've got no clue how far the show intends to take Stacey, or in what directions, but he's quickly made himself a welcome addition to the show's dynamic with a ton of potential. Yet somehow, evidently not content with an episode that already had this much going for it, there's also an entire Gaon-centric plot in here providing some great character development. As I've mentioned, Gaon turned out to be a very different character from what I was expecting going in. He's maybe my least favorite of the group, but I also believe him to be the member that is perhaps most emblematic of Zenkaiger's unique goals as a Sentai series, because his flaws as an individual are the most glaring. Like, you know, he's a jerk, right? There's kinda no getting around that. He fluctuates between somewhat patronizing affection and deeply hypocritical loathing with almost no middle ground, and that's hardly the personality of any great hero. But then, this is a show about heroes who are terrible choices to be heroes, so I also look at all this as something that's working as intended. It's the kind of thematic core that naturally leads to interesting character growth, and I thought this episode was a nice step towards that for Gaon. Just a little one – just a start – but, especially considering it's but one part of a packed episode, I think they did a nice job here refocusing his character a bit. You see a more earnest side to him than usual, and I honestly really like the implication that he wasn't worried about the others getting hurt because he figures Kikainoids are tough enough to be fine without his help. Again, there are a ton of things wrong with his whole train of thought, but what this episode does well is make it apparent there's an honest desire to protect something in there. His misguided hesitation to fight is a glimmer of genuine kindness under his superficial surface. Gaon came out of this episode feeling more layered as a character than he was going in, and that was enough for me at the moment. It's almost more of a bonus than anything with how packed this episode is with great fanservice, delivered in a way I'd imagine is still perfectly digestible for less hardcore fans, which is something I place a ton of value on. You don't need to know who all those robots are for it to be exciting that the episode ends with ALL those robots showing up. I think the simple fact that I want to talk about Gaon at all with stuff like that in here too is the biggest testament to how strong I found this episode there could be. |
I felt Gaon's moment of growth in this episode could've been made more clear if they didn't have everyone just go "Oh, I totally understand you" and just sweep away how he acts.
Zyuran calls Gaon out, Kaito tells him to chill, granny accosts him, and then everyone gets where Gaon is coming from? Eh, it was just too weak for me. Also, I rewatched the mech fight because I love it, except this time, this clip was ringing through my head :lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PrRUKFcnPM |

Again, not really a huge step in any direction so much as the show's way of elaborating on the group dynamic some more, presumably to pave the way for the actual meaty development down the line. Quote:

MISB Flash King can fetch a pretty penny. I know, because I've seen the prices a non-mint damaged copy can go for >> |
So new million dollar question; who will win, Diend or Stacaesar.
|
Stacaesar. More summons per item, and his primary tactic isn't to summon some guys then run away.

The whole episode should have been devoted to Gaon becoming less of a jerk OR the introduction of Stacaesar. Not both. As a result, the structure of the entire episode felt absolutely wonky, like two entirely different episodes were crammed into one.
That being said, all of the fanservice was completely on point (as is usual for Sentai), and Staceasar should be an interesting rival. He just deserved more focus in his own debut episode, especially now that he's about to overshadowed by Twokaizer next week. So Twokaizer is totally a pun on "tsukai" (to use, or to do), right? |

Zenkaiger just doesn't know how to disappoint, this was amazing! Stacaesar had a really solid debut, from sending past Sentai against the Zenkaigers, DiEnd style, and then drops an army of Mechs, just plain fun. Also, since he's Barishtura's (I keep forgetting his name) "son," and says he's part human, does that mean he's a cyborg? If so, then his design may be more Kamen Rider than we thought, also, not sure if it's just me, but Stacey looks to me like a male version of Yodonna, might be his face, it just has that sort of look.
And I really appreciate the little quips of what Sentai they're referencing, as someone who hasn't seen much Sentai. But, oh boy, the Kikainoids are really impressing me with their stuntwork, and how they mix up the Mech fights is just too good, I can't help but enjoy seeing them. Next Episode: A new challenger appears, big goons, more Mechs, seriously, that guy looks like Kairi/LupinRed, and Goldy boy debuts. |
I've said it before, but every anniversary show has that tendency to be just fabulous. And Zenkaiger is not disappointing.
I think Gaon's dilemma is something that is designed to help the team, because his standard actually gives the others focus on fighting their own kind. |
