Zero One's take on racism was more nuanced, about explicitly racist characters (like Aruto, Fuwa and even Yua to an extent) seeing the error of their ways and changing for the better. Most American political media treats human nature as solid, and thus, bad people can never be good. Instead of a helping hand, it's a knife towards those the creators don't agree with by saying "you will always be the villain" and just making that divide bigger. This goes for both sides, by the way. |

Comics have never been a subtle medium. As someone who has recently started reading American comics, an X-Men story from 2018 was no more political than one from 2001, which was no more political than one from 1994. They are all blatantly political.
But somehow it's different now. I am going to regret saying this and not just leaving the thread and never looking back. |

I’m just worried about that Zero-One graphic novel because Westerners adapting something from Japan often ends up rough to say the least. On the other hand, worst case it just gets thrown on the pile with other bad toku content that already exists, so no harm done I suppose.

Interested in seeing what's done with the Zero One material but I mean...really...if you didn't think it got political or that the whole "human rights" aspect wasn't in play for the entirety of the series...cause it was...then I honestly don't know what to tell you. Cause it's what makes the series so interesting and personal in some cases.
What ever blinders you purchased should get a high product rating cause they're doing their jobs amazingly. |
I wonder if they'll get Kyle Higgins for the Zero-One comic since he seems to be the go-to guy for American tokusatsu comics.

Is a bit annoying that whenever anything like this happens the topic is INSTANTLY “westerners force politics….” like come on lol

My first thought is more, "God I am just tired of western adaptations of any and all foreign media", regardless of what it is. Almost every single western adaptation I've seen has been EXTREMELY inferior compared to the original, even if they say stuff like "Oh you should judge it on its own merits", like yea, and they were pretty shit ON their own merits.
Best and most recent example is Netflix Cowboy Bebop. Like I've only tangentially watched parts of Cowboy Bebop myself (never really was into it), but watching the Netflix adaptation was like, "Wow, this sucks without even understanding anything about the original". The only one I give any sort of slack to is Power Rangers, considering its very nature as an adaptation of Super Sentai. But that slack isn't enough to stop me from criticisms of individual seasons. |
