The All-encompassing STAR WARS Thread!
And the winner is...
J.J. Abrams! I'm excited. I liked the new Star Trek, and I love Revolution. So we'll see what J.J. can do with Star Wars. My hope is that it starts with Jar-Jar being beheaded. |
I'm really not sure if it's been confirmed yet. I think he'll do an excellent job, but given his role in Star Trek there's bound to be some awkwardness.
|
Sounds good,he's a good director, but it's still owned by Disney now.I think they're going to have most of the fights in 7 end with the villain either running away or them dying where you cant see it.(i.e. an enemy ship exploding where you cant see the pilot or crew being hurt) It will be a surprise for me if Disney does let Abrams add decapitations and other killings during combat.I at least hope they do.
|
Kinda like how they didn't let (ignoring the fact he's supposed to be back in Shield) Culson die on screen in Avengers?.... Oh wait....
Yeah Disney owning it won't make it more kid friendly. They can if they want, but they're smart enough to know that the legions of fans will get pissy. Abrahams is a good choice. Granted it's a bit strange him tackling both of the 'big' Sci-fi franchises, but good for him if he does. |
I just have this feeling in the back of my mind that they'll do something to it.I dont know what, but it's Disney. They wont let Abrams have complete control, which may hurt it in the long run.Abrams likes to make a lot of the movies he makes dark, which is good for Star wars.I do hope it ends up good,I just don't have high hopes for it till I see a trailer or on-set shots when its made.
|
Look. One thing you can say about Disney is they like money. They won't do anything that will stop them from making money. So they won't come in and make wide-sweeping changes when J.J turns in the next movie, because they know who much money they stand to make.
|
Disney has shown with Marvel that they are not interested in messing with the valuable IPs they are buying up. They are much more interested in leveraging those brands to sell merchandise and distribute films. Despite the wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth from the netmarks, Disney has not interfered with Marvel's day to day operations since they acquired them and, considering the buckets of money they have made by operating that way, it is logical that they would take the same approach with Lucasfilm/Star Wars.
As far as JJ Abrams as director of Star Wars, eh, the jury's out for me. I liked his reboot of Star Trek in an Elseworlds, Not-Actually-Star-Trek-But-An-Incredible-Simulation sort of way. But Star Wars as a property is better suited to his visual style than Star Trek. So it would be intriguing to see what he does with it, visually at least. Honestly the script is the key here moreso than the visuals. It's going to look like Star Wars. But what kind of brain will it have? That's my concern. |
Yay for lens flares.
|
i just wanna say that disney owns miramax, which has made kill bill....... there not gonna dumb it down :)
|
So is this actually confirmed? Because I've read it in numerous places this morning but I don't think a single one gave a definite answer.
Eitherway, he's an excellent choice for the job. Sans the lens flare :lol |
You know, I read in Time magazine that J.J. won't be able to direct Star Wars due to his obligations to Star Trek.
|
As a die hard, intense Star Wars fan...
I would be entirely okay with this. He knows science fiction, that much is clear. My only concern is how well he'd be able to make a distinction between the styles of Star Trek and Star Wars. I don't want to walk into Episode VII feeling like it looks just like his Trek endeavors. |

It's apparently true. Nearly all the major online news outlets reported it yesterday. It's just hard for me to believe that one person would now be responsible for a fantastic new Star Trek universe as well as continuing the legacy of Star Wars. If you'd told me something like this 10 years ago I would have laughed at you. Now? I think my head may explode.

I'm not all that excited about this. I didn't really like Armageddon, Cloverfield, or Star Trek, and I was told Super 8 was kind of disappointing...
|
Bah, just let it die.

After that it can fade away. Until then, though... |
i might be a complete idiot but have they said if it's a sequel, prequel, or midquel?

For me, I enjoyed his Star Trek, which I always found very Star Wars. Super 8 has a kind of Spielberg-like wonder about it which would be perfect for Star Wars. It's not a perfect movie, yes, but it's one of the closest movies I've seen recently to capture the magic of the Spielberg/Lucas era. I think he's a rather safe choice for Star Wars, but I can't say he's perfect until the movie's out of course. I have good reason to be optimistic about it because Abrams has shown the ability to capture wonder and magic in Star Trek and Super 8, and Michael Ardnt would probably do something similar with the script since he wrote the excellent Toy Story 3. If anything, Star Wars needs to be magical again. |
Honestly, as long as there's a Han Solo type character to counter balance the no longer interesting or special Jedi characters, it's a step in the right direction.
Overall, I see what's what when there's something to see. |

He wasn't the worst name on the list of contenders but he wasn't the best. I generally like his movies, but they all feel rather superficial to me. Also his taste in creature design is weak imo. The creatures in Cloverfield(which he produced although didn't direct), Super 8, and the two Star Treks all look vaguely similar, like giant shaved wingless earless bats.
But as long as he doesn't have his buddies Lindelof etc write it, I think it might turn out to be good. |

Interesting news, not related to Star Wars VII but still really exciting:
LFL Announces New Animated Series: Star Wars Rebels Can we make this the general discussion Star Wars thread? :) |
Consider it done!
|
I'm not really a big fan of the Star Wars films *duck and hide*
But I think the universe and mythology and so on work fantastically in animation, also in comics, where they have much more freedom to create epic space battles or depicting the powers or whatever else. So I'm definitely gonna look into this new series. |
