My favorite anime is bleach because it got me into anime and I don't have a favorite manga.
|
Anime goes to Kotonoha No Niwa, I can never get bored of that movie.
It's a great romance film that focuses on the distances between people rather than simple "pink" and "sugary" love. I don't read much manga though... I quite liked Negima years ago, but I never finished it. |
My favourite Anime and Manga currently goes into fullmetal alchemist and brother hood version of the anime.
It was one of the first series I had gone and through and I had loved the mix of action, comedy, drama and all that other good stuff. I really like the majority of characters in this series and it is just a great series overall. |

Sidenote, I have always wondered why they named "One Punch Man", One Punch Man. Couldn't they have just called it "One Hit K.O.!" That's definitely a badass title right there. |

I'm going to avoid putting this in any kind of order, since I'm really not really interested in judging in any definitive sort of way.
Cowboy Bebop. I don't imagine this is a surprise to too many. Anyone that's watched CB knows the greatness of the music, the voice cast, the story. I'm not gonna waste time saying all the stuff I love about it, just that it's still very solid today and I can always enjoy watching it. Outlaw Star. This is a weird one. I rarely watched this as a kid, reason being is because it always made me nervous. Considering that I'm someone that doesn't care much for traveling, especially when I was young, a series based largely (At least from what I recall) being about forging ones own path and exploring, really struck a cord of sorts. I'm sure if I went back it probably wouldn't be a very good series, that's just the feeling I get, but I could be wrong. Regardless, despite not watching it as much as DBZ or other shows on Toonami, this one always stuck with me. I wonder if those motivational speeches Toonami did had anything to do with it. Certainly made an impact if nothing else. The Big O Pulp Mecha. This was like peanut butter and chocolate to me. I love detective stories, old radio shows, Jazzy music, very 20s-40s sort of things. Take that and add giant mechs with a style akin to 70s Manga and animation reminiscent of Batman:TAS, and I'm in. I will admit at times it was cheesy by accident rather than intention, and the ending is...yeah. But most of the time I'm just enjoying the music and atmosphere the series has. Jazzy tracks like 'Huston Street' just make my ears melt. But the 60's twilight zone-ish sci-fi music, rock, and Toku-esque battle themes are all great. Speaking of soundtracks I like... Lupin the Third(Red Jacket and Green Jacket) This is interesting, this was one of the first Animes I've ever watched and like most people I first watched it on Adult Swim. This was a show that I always wanted to see more of. It didn't have some over arching or particularly amazing story, but it was a fun watch for me, like a 70's spy flick, and sometimes that's all you need. At times the series did delve a little too much into Lupin's perversions, and there are some dated parts with it being from the 70s and all. Although not quite as dated as the Dub which, while I didn't mind, really shouldn't try to pretend the show wasn't set in the 70s. Years later I discovered subs for the Green Jacket series, which I had always wanted to see. In all honesty it's aged a lot better. The humor is toned down in comparison to it's successor, which is surprising all things considered. I really enjoy the animation style for this one too, just something about it that clicks for me. Can't say the same for the music though, I can't recall any of it. Red Jacket just had a much more memorable funky score. Attack on Titan. Honestly this probably too early to put on here, but having seen all the first season I didn't find anything that bothered me. The worst thing I can say is that it has a very slow start, but I don't consider that a negative. Although that, along with the cliffhanger structure, does make it deceptively easy to marathon. Really there is a lot I love here, the mysteries that are built up, revealed, layered upon. However, Mikasa was the most surprising aspect here for me, because given the culture surrounding women in Japan, yeah I'm honestly surprised she's written as well as she is. Making her strong while not taking away an (if albeit rarely shown) emotional side was a great decision. It's like she's written like a human being, dear lord. Beyond that, I of course enjoy the music, very foreboding stuff, heavy on drums and strings. Although the occasional Engrish rock track does make me giggle ever so slightly. Really good animation and sound quality. When there are titan battles you feel the roars, you feel the impact, and that's the greatest thing you can accomplish when giants fight on screen. Helling Ultimate. Boy I loved watching this. I love horror movies, I have a soft spot for the Universal and Hammer days, but certainly enjoy more modern stuff as well. Though I've always been a bigger fan of monsters than slashers villains. Without a doubt this is my favorite portrayal of the Vampire. People always forget they're shape shifters outside of bats, that they're also like dark sorcerers, that sunlight doesn't mean much to them in way of harm. This accomplishes all that, and builds upon those concepts in its own way. The story is undoubtedly stock and honestly goofy as hell. I mean nazi vampire/zombies ffs. But it's almost like it's aware of this and just goes with it. As much as I love the orchestrated pieces, the animation, the sometimes abstract designs, and especially Crispin Freeman's sexy ass voice, I will point out my biggest problem with the series, which is Seras' origins. Really fucking unnecessary and honestly even a bit lazy in writing. I get that it's supposed to gross you out, but Goddamn even the fucked up stuff that happened to Alucard isn't as bad simply because they don't shove it down your throat. In spite of that rather massive gross out, I do enjoy watching the OVAs. It was also the first and so far only anime I've watched so much that I was able to start doing impressions. Chu-2&Ren. I hadn't watched any anime in a very long time when found out about this in around 2013. This, for me, was a very sweet and cute show. While the slap stick aspects could be hit or miss for me, the core heart of the show of being true to yourself, always brought me joy. I don't think I can give a compliment much higher than something that makes me smile. I'm also a sucker for love stories and there's just too many cute awkward scenes for me to count here. The sequel takes a few of those concepts further, although the thing that stuck out most for me was that Yuuta is so devoted to Rikka that it's to the point of being oblivious to Shichimiya's advances. That's just too sweet. Manga. Yeah...Honestly I don't read a lot of Manga. I've read more light novels than Manga. I've only read Sailor Moon and I'm still reading the original Mazinger Z, so I guess you could count those by default. For SM, I enjoyed the first two arcs, although the second one had some moments with Chibi-Usa I could REALLY do without. Third arc is a bit all over the place for me. Sometimes it's really good and honestly reminded a bit of Kamen Rider, and sometimes it was boring and character interactions downright odd. I think the stuff with Pluto and Chibi is great, their interactions actually made me really appreciate Chibi-Usa as a character. Dream arc, if I recall correctly, was a bloody drag, and evidently forgettable since I almost forgot it existed. I remember Pegasus, Helios, and that earth kingdom Elysion, not much else. Stars arc was okay, but felt rushed and a bit abrupt when the ending comes. For the overall art, it's slightly mixed, but mostly good. Sometimes it could be really greatly detailed and even surprisingly graphic in some of those depictions, and most of the time it was good. But sometimes you have things like Uranus having a six foot long arm. For Mazinger Z, I'm largely okay with it so far. Some parts are a bit wonky, and I have to say I find the humor that's interjected, more so with the character of Count Brocken than anywhere else, to be distracting. There is literally a page where Brocken kills someone very violently, and then the next scene the heroes they're playing American football with Brocken's detached head in a jar. That's not balancing out the serious with the comedic, that's mood whiplash. That isn't to say all the humor is like that, in fact I'd say a good chunk of it is really good. A scene in particular dealing with Koji in Sayaka winding up in a bathhouse together eventually leads to Sayaka standing up from the water, freaking the both of them out, to run around, and then crash into one another. The scene plays out comically and is a bit sweet given the cute embarrassment they both have afterwards. Go Nagi has stated that he's never intended to write or draw anything with the desire to be perverse, only cute, and whether that is true or because this manga is tame by today's standards, I do not know. I can say that that I do find it to be true that nothing here borderlines on Ecchi or anything of that nature. The worst thing here is the occasional ill timed humor as previously mentioned. The action scenes and art are really good. The action is rough and very stiff at first, but really picks up as the series goes on, adding more dynamics and a better sense of movement. Much to my surprise, Koji treats Sayaka with respect, which if you've seen the anime you know how much of a polar opposite that is given what a sexist prick he was in that series. Sayaka herself, in general, to be a female character in a work from the 70's, is well written thus far. Her being a female is a non issue which in many ways shocks me more than Mikasa in AoT, given the time period this is from. The worst thing I can say is that she winds up half naked at time but it's usually done for "humorous" effect than anything else, and I can only count all of three times when it happens. Why did this never get popular over here, again? Because I would totally be okay spending money on this. |
