ShiShiLeo Paints Toku Stuff
This is a thread for all the Toku (and Toku related) toys I paint.
For tips on painting Super Minipla: http://www.tokunation.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=29 For tips on painting Figure Rise Standard: http://www.tokunation.com/showpost.p...5&postcount=71 For tips on painting SODO & YUDO figures: http://www.tokunation.com/showpost.p...2&postcount=59 I love to paint miniatures and add details to Gashapon and vinyl toys. Here's a set of "finger puppet" toys. Before and after: https://i.imgur.com/znvFbm8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/2uk8Ajj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/QBZJFWP.jpg https://i.imgur.com/SCsAOHr.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Ob0XTQf.jpg These things are surprisingly detailed and a little paint really brings out the finer details. A couple things bother me: Agito's head crest is deployed (I'd rather have the regular look), Wizard is holding his gun, W's pose is rather generic, and Ghost's pose takes up too much space. I used an ultra glossy clear nail polish on all the eyes to give them a nice shiny look. The rest of the paint was done using Bandai's own Gundam Markers. Decade was the most work, Gaim was the most challenging, and I still can't find a best match for Build's colors. Here's the whole gang! https://i.imgur.com/5qYfP8X.jpg I'll be posting more stuff from RKF, SO-DO, and Minipla. Cheers! |
Oh wow, you did a great job with these. I never expected these to be able to look this good.
|
Awesome work painting these, they look so good together!
|
Those look so great!
I'm okay with the Agito crest being deployed, since it looks like he's in his Finishing Move pose. And Double, it's not a great pose... but I think I'm more bummed that he's not two finger puppets split down the middle. What a waste! |
Outstanding.

https://i.imgur.com/9noC4XR.jpg I'm very proud of this one. Minipla ToQ-oh and Diesel-Oh. I actually ended up cutting up the stickers to use a combination of paint and stickers. I really want to paint the white front of the Red Ressha but my paint was actually eating through the plastic a bit so white paint turned out pink. This actually worked to my advtange where the black areas are painted on each Ressha. The color ran so deep, it looks almost pre-molded in that color. I love love love Minipla. I own the DX version of ToQ-oh but the minipla's articulation is just so much better. Minipla might be too good, as now I'm opting for the Minipla versions over the DX stuff. |
RKF Kamen Rider Valkyrie, Build Hazard Kaizoku Ressha, Geiz Revive Shippu
https://i.imgur.com/jVpcHF6.jpg The RKF line is decent, but painting them really takes them to the next level. For some figures, the lack of paint is truly astounding. But if you're willing to go the extra steps, the end result is satisfying. You might have noticed that these 3 figures are Premium Bandai equivalent in SH Figuarts costing upwards of $120 each. I believe Valkyrie is the first female rider in the RKF line. She is really easy to spruce up, with just a Gundam panel liner marker to fill in all the black spots and lines. Some black paint on the shot riser makes a huge difference. Build Hazard is almost entirely straight black. You get alternative head pieces to make up for it, but out of the box, he almost looks like a batman or ninja figure. Again, details to the belt make it look great. Up until recently, the SH Figuarts version of Build Hazard couldn't be made into Kaizoku Ressha (my favorite version!). So RKF came through again! Geiz Revive is the most interesting. The SH Figuarts version doesn't actually transform. Instead it parts form- looking a little more show accurate, but how cool is it that the RKF can do the actual transformation with the armor? I repainted a lot of black parts into a gunmetal silver (knee caps and exterior of armor). To top it all off, I printed the Ziku Driver graphics onto transparent paper and glued them to the belt. Who needs Figuarts now?! |
Wait, RKF Hazard comes with multiple heads?!
Either way these looks great! I haven't been too fond of RKF myself but you make them look fantastic |
These are "Rider's Anthem" gashapon toys.
https://i.imgur.com/sEisaIY.png Grand Zi-O is surprisingly detailed. You can almost make out each of the riders on his armor! These 3 suits are actually some of my all time favorite Kamen Rider designs so when they were released as a set, it felt like it was made for me. |
These all look incredible, you've done an amazing job!

Keep up the good work. I feel like my eyesight is restored seeing these.
Seriously, the touch-ups on that Grand Zi-O chibi figure is just great seeing the before and after shots. |
So my cousin got a 3D printer and I had him make me some Wizard Ring pieces to fit bigger fingers. Then he asked me... anything else you want?
So I looked. https://i.imgur.com/XXeCjZA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/dNK4jLz.jpg This is a 3D printed progrise key. It is not to scale. Closer to 8.5mm across, so smaller; but still a fun little desk toy to flip over and over. Bonus! Because I printed the graphics on clear sticker paper and didn't want to waste the full sheet, I printed a little buckle for my ToQ Ichigo! https://i.imgur.com/Xa1nGVS.jpg I was planning to paint the progrise key but I actually like the look of the raw grey plastic. Here's a link to the printable file https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4074330 |
Those actually look really good.

Yesterday I was able to check out the entry grade Zero One kit.
Here it is with a little silver paint and black details: https://i.imgur.com/6fX3Hkx.jpg The Zero One suit is beautifully simple and it translates well to a model kit with few stickers. The kit comes with grey/silver stickers for the arms. It's not an easy paint job because the area is recessed and its a large swath. Compared to the Figuarts: https://i.imgur.com/hHksXMP.jpg https://i.imgur.com/h7JXMBz.jpg The entry grade kit is "bigger" and more in scale with the Figure-rise standard line. It actually looks very accurate to the show suit, insofar as SHF are very action figure-y and thinned out. So why did I pick up the entry grade kit when I already have the SHF? To put it inside my computer of course! It's hard to get a picture, but ever since the Zero One suit was revealed to be fluorescent yellow, I've wanted to do a UV display. https://i.imgur.com/VFygOjt.jpg My next mod will be to add an LED into the head to give those eyes some glow. I'll post an update with the results. |
Do you have any tips for people who wanna starter painting their toys? Been thinking about getting into it myself.

You can pump a small amount of the marker paint onto a small metal tray (or aluminum foil) and then dip the brush in the paint and go at it. The paint is pretty durable, but if you mess up, you can scratch it off with a sharp blade or wipe it off with alcohol. Don't worry about staying in lines, you can scratch off any paint that goes where it wasn't supposed to. < This is actually the big trick of good painting. Don't try too hard to be accurate. Paint around the area, then remove the excess. The viscosity is very good, not too runny and not too thick to leave unsightly brush strokes. I'll try to make a picture guide soon. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I have the Astro Megazord Mini-pla kit on order so I might use that as the basis for a guide depending on how much paint it needs. |
Wait you actually put Zero-One inside your desktop? That's so awesome! :lol
|
UPDATE:
So putting an LED inside the head was a lot harder than I thought it would be. First, the LED I bought was bigger than I expected so I had to drill out way more space in the head. Second, the eye pieces were not at all transparent, so I had to make my own eye lenses out of left over clear red gundam runner. Lots of sanding later and some glue and the final result is: https://i.imgur.com/V3un0yL.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/O9IjVoT.jpg The LED is wired to the motherboard's power LED so it functions as the power indicator. The lights in eyes add so much to the figure and I wish more Kamen Rider figures had something like it. There's a company that sells SHF upgrades, and they make a replacement head for the Zero One SHF with LEDs inside that you can activate with a progrise key! Get on it Bandai! |

Using Zero-One's eyes as a power indicator? Genius!
The eyes when lit-up kind of spooks me though ngl. |
I finally got my hands on Figure-rise Kuuga.
https://i.imgur.com/UvEFUym.jpg Kuuga is a real nice, if a little basic. He doesn't come with any accessories- only some more hands and an effect part for his rider kick. I used a Gundam panel liner marker on all the silver parts (jaw and belt). In terms of paint, Kuuga has a very small sticker sheet, basically amounting to belt details and a bunch of red dots all over his armor. https://i.imgur.com/FHeuzqj.jpg A standard red Gundam marker is a perfect fit. A small dab make a perfect sticker replacement. Like the other Figure-Rise Kamen Rider kits, Kuuga comes with metallic foil stickers to place behind the eye lenses. It created a glowing effect. To recreate the effect for Kuuga's belt, I used a chrome paint marker. https://i.imgur.com/fHNcxcs.jpg The result is great and really pops in person. https://i.imgur.com/uaMGLzj.jpg I will say I am looking at different ideas to get a more metallic look on his armor. Otherwise, Kuuga is another great model kit in the fantastic Figure-rise Standard line. If I have to complain, the eyes can appear more orange than red under brighter lights. Also, while the gold coloring is very well done, some of the nub marks are very visible- particularly around the wrist. I'll post more pictures of him with the other kits soon. |
That belt looks amazing! Excellent work!
|
Your small touches really made him pop. Nice work!
|
Ooh, I like that belt idea! Is it easy to do? What sort of markers do you have; are they expensive?
|
Quote:
And yeah, they're definitely useful for doing any sort of painting on figures or model kits. Would recommend. |

This looks so good ShiShi!

Mini Guide to Detailing your Mini Pla
Modern model kits from Bandai excel at color separation in parts. If you didn't know, Bandai's ability to mold up to 4 colors in a single runner is actually a bit of trade secret. Ask anyone who creates industrial plastic molds to look at a typical Bandai runner and they will be hard pressed to figure out how exactly it was done- much less for a reasonable cost. Anyway, Mini-pla kits use a lot of the same technology from Gundam model kits, but in many ways the engineering for the transformations are superior. Today we're looking at the Galaxy Mega Mech or Astro Megazord for US audiences. https://i0.wp.com/www.powerrangersno...50%2C311&ssl=1 Typically when detailing a kit, it comes down to what will be easy to paint, what is better left as a sticker, and how does it compare to TV depictions? https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XLSAFUb1w...0/IMG_3655.JPG The little shuttle vehicle of the mech looks like this straight from the box. It comes with a blue sticker to wrap around the edge of the "wings". In general, stickers that wrap around things or have to conform to non-geometric shapes, will end up looking janky, come off easy, or worse- just fail to go on the surface. These places are where paint applications are the highest priority. https://i.imgur.com/PQ5epzS.jpg Here I've used a standard blue Gundam marker that comes in the Gundam Marker Starter set. https://smile.amazon.com/GSI-Creos-G...dp/B0009AFN0S/ ]I always recommend Gundam markers for a couple of reasons: 1. Its usually the exact same colors Bandai uses for their plastics. Look at that blue! It's a perfect match! 2. They are alcohol based and formulated to adhere to Bandai's model kit plastic. This means you don't have to do any priming or sanding before you paint. I usually just recommend washing the part (to remove the oils used to release the runner from the mold), and then paint directly onto the plastc. 3. Gundam markers are very forgiving. If you mess up, you can scrape away the mistakes or use Gundam marker eraser https://smile.amazon.com/3Set-Gundam.../dp/B01JIQRM2K (or rubbing alcohol and a q-tip). 4. Gundam markers are versatile. You can us the marker tip to paint directly onto parts, or press the marker into a tray and use a brush to paint. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gVi1EercR...25283%2529.jpg Here's that same shuttle after I cleaned up the blue paint and applied some panel lines. I used a Gundam panel liner to make the lines appear deeper and I colored in the windows instead of using the sticker. If an area is recessed, painting becomes much easier. With a gundam panel liner pen, you can trace into the area and then use an eraser to clean up. https://i.imgur.com/yBbQUFJ.jpg I always recommend testing colors on the plastic runner to see if it would match. This particular model kit came with a pre-painted yellow part. https://i.imgur.com/wjghNSs.jpg I tested the yellow marker and determined that the sticker would be a better fit because it was a wholly flat stick (no wrapping or bending) and it matched better with the part already painted. If that part wasn't already painted, I probably would've painted it all myself. Here's an example where paint is better: https://i.imgur.com/TFNocZJ.jpg You see, the stickers attempt to reproduce the details with some white line graphics. These would totally clash with the rest of the model kit. So again, I painted directly onto the part with a black gundam marker, and scraped up any mistakes. https://i.imgur.com/JmCN5O7.jpg It's difficult to match the black plastic because its molded in black, and here I'm painting black on top of grey. It actually looks fine in person and much better than the stickers. But lets take a look at that sticker sheet: https://i.imgur.com/ZmLq7rJ.jpg Those big stickers on the top left go underneath the feet of the Delta Zord, which are completely blank. So in this case, the stickers would be adding details, which is different from the stickers right below them which are meant to cover and replace. And then stickers like 25 and 26, which are made up of multiple colors and graphics, you would never really attempt to paint that. Even though they do some wrapping, the details are just too sharp to attempt on your own. https://i.imgur.com/Q96LOS7.jpg In the end we have a kit with some paint and panel lines to really bring out the detail. For the finished model, I added silver paint around the edge of the shield because that's how its depicted on the show. There's a lot more detail you can add, but it's mostly a balance of how detailed you want it to look vs the effort you want to put it. I'm just here to tell you that stuff like Gundam makers and panel liner pens really go a long way and you shouldn't be intimidated by them. Please feel free to ask any questions about tips or specific models and figures. I also do stuff like add magnets to the bottom of my figures to help them stand better in my metal display cabinet. |
Wow! Thanks for the insight! I really appreciate you breaking down when to paint versus when to sticker. Super helpful!

Is there a way to do a poll in these forums?
I am debating whether I should paint Kuuga's armor to make it more metallic like its screen appearance. |
Quote:
I would really like to to some paiting but it seems to me same I would need a lot of gundam marker to be able to do one competely. Does it worth to buy only some color (red, green, blue, silver, black, white and an eraser for example) ? Sure it seems easy to undo what you paint, is it really returning to the previous state ? Apart trying on an actual minipla, is there any way to practise before ? should the paint be covered with some gloss paint to protect it ? I just read today on a japanese forum that gundam marker shouldn't be used on ABS plastic as they tend to break more easily after that. Do you agree with this ? Is there ABS plastic in minipla or super minipla ? is there a way to recognise it ? (I think I read on some plastic model that some plastic parts were ABS but I wonder if it isn't for gunpla). |

In general, top coat is a good way to protect all model kits and make any toy look better. Quote:
There are a couple of ways to tell what kind of plastic it is https://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Abs-Plastic After working with a lot of kits, you can start to tell on your own. But most important, you should not use Gundam marker on joints or places of stress. There is a specific marker Gundam Marker GM22 200 that is popular for making joints look metallic- this one can break down plastic if you use too much. Any porous plastic will break down when any type of paint is introduced. This is where primer and top coats help. But again, I am only suggesting Gundam paint markers on details and small areas. I do not recommend to use them over large areas (greater than 4cm maybe?) because it won't look as clean as an airbrush. |
All rider go!
This is all 7 of the lead riders released so far in the Figure Rise Standard line: https://i.imgur.com/pqQqVv8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/PTrhRjw.jpg |

Also may I suggest painting the silver parts on Zi-O's neck? I did so on mine and it completed the look |
Quote:
I never even noticed that Zi-O's neck was silver! Is his whole neck piece just silver? I see some detail likes so I assume its just the front and back? |
Quote:
For the neck, it's just the front and back section that is silver, i.e. the molded parts. Its basically the watch band continuing up from his chest up to his helmet and around to the back https://i.pinimg.com/originals/93/4b...5ed07e597f.jpg |
Yep Tamiya black wash is what I used. A very tiny tiny bit in all the places with small ridges. I suppose I can also give it a gloss top coat and it might create a similar effect.
You were totally right about the neck! https://i.imgur.com/c7skK5y.jpg It made all the difference. I also accidentally poured out too much silver paint so I painted W's scarf. It still bothers me how static it looks, but this will do for now. Do you have any ideas what I can do to replace hit? Maybe heat formed silver vinyl? |
Perhaps silver vinyl with a wire ?
