I found out a really cool detail about Ark-Zero depending on who it's currently possesing his suit actor actually changes to that Rider Primary Suit actor.
For example when possesing Jin Ark-Zero suit actor is Eitoku but when possesing Horobi it's Seiji Takaiwa. |

Since everyone is talking about how much they like Onari, is it time for me to say that I actually really enjoy Shunpei from KR Wizard? He isn't perfect by any means as a character, but he gets some really genuinely funny moments and has good chemistry with Haruto.

In the spirit of this cosmic coincidence (two people liking Shunpei at once is the Rider equivalent of a solar eclipse happening during the vernal equinox), let me say something positive about "everyone's favorite" Wizard character.
The Wizard Net-Movies are some of the best content Kamen Rider has ever produced. Amongst those Net-Movies, I've always thought that Shunpei's ad-libbing as the sidekick in the Koyomi fortune-telling skits was some of the funniest work of anyone involved in the projects. Even in a series of killer sketches, his work elevated the premise. Memorably funny work. |

I'm sorry but I don't find annoying man-child funny.

Oh that's a great scene.
Honestly Wizard did something I wish more shows would do. And that's just have extra's of the suits just doing mundane stuff. Like doing the laundry, or, taking a shower. There was something just incredibly amazing about those extra's that I just loved. |
I'm also glad to see this Wizard Net Movie love, because that is the funniest thing humanity has ever produced. We CANNOT top that. Every single segment had me in absolute hysterics, and I will not shut up about the one with Medusa being unable to tell Kamen Riders apart to this day.
|
You know what? While we're on the topic, just the fact that net movies happened at all? I can't name my favourites specifically but frankly that's because the majority are just so goddamn fun! An absolutely magical time for Rider just doing a bunch of funny skits for the hell of it

The Super Hero Taisen Z ones will forever be my favorite Net Movies, personally.

dang, now I HAVE to watch those net movies... |

https://i.imgur.com/y9f5CZr.png Shunpei deserves so much better. But yeah overall they're solid enough. In terms of Show Net Movies, I think Fourze's are still my overall favorites. SHTZ is my top overall though. |
I haven’t watched SHTZ yet, but I always love Net Movies and now want to see it *badly*.
Another Net Movie thing that always stuck with me were the W ones with the drawing contests, mostly because of Ryu’s actor being so comically bad at drawing and then Shotaro’s actor meanwhile is all “Yeah, I wanted to be a mangaka when I was a kid.” I love Net Movies, okay? I would be absolutely ecstatic to see that format revived. |

Honestly? Yeah. Alot of my favorite Net Movies were the ones where the cast was just kinda hanging out and doing something fun. Like the art contest in W or the quiz show in OOO. Fun stuff!

Am I too late to use this thread as yet another opportunity to gush about musicals?!
Gosh, you guys, every time I watch something like this, I get chills. |

I'm just a huge fan of whenever Sentai does something weird with its team composition, whether it's smaller teams, larger teams, multiple teams, team members who aren't human, anything of that nature.

Oh gosh, okay.
So. Long post. Glance at the bold sentences to get my TL;DR. I've been waiting for a positivity post like this so I can see everyone's nerdy thoughts. I love final form weapons. I'd love for them to come back. Saber seems like the perfect time to try them out again. From what I've heard, they didn't sell well, but I always loved them purely because they made the new form feel like more than just another toy. They had a uniqueness to them that not many forms after did. After Wizard, final form weapons disappeared in favor of more Rider-based villains. While that did lead to more sales, I feel that that change made the heroes' final forms feel less "impactful", if that makes sense. As much as I love Mugen or Zero-Two or Muteki, mostly due to their powers, gimmicks, and designs, I will say that I remember forms like Xtreme, Ryuki Survive, Liner Form, Hyper Kabuto, Infinity, or Cosmic States more so for the suit AND the special weapon that came with them. Genius has a rad design, but its proclaimed powerset of "all bottles combined" devolves to flash-stepping and using a Diamond barrier, IIRC, twice (once in its debut, and once in the movie; I legit wish it did what Cosmic did in its debut, mixing random bottle powers for crazy effects, even if all it did was flash step the rest of the show). Muteki is unbeatable; you can stop it, but once Emu goes starman, you can't knock him out of his suit. The teleporting also helps lol. Mugen has 7 finishers, and it mainly uses the naginata mode of the GanGun Slasher, but that's about it. I wonder if these shows had final form weapons. what would they have looked like? Would Genius have an upgrade to the Fullbottle Buster? Would Muteki have a cool shooting star rainbow sword with buttons and a cool button-code finisher? How about Gaim; would Kiwami have a fruit bowl gunblade thing (I know it could Gate Of Babylon the other weapons, but still)? Meanwhile, Fourze's warping enemies into space to be obliterated with his friendship-powered rocket blade. I just like how the weapons "completed" the forms and made them feel like so much more than a simple new toy. I love the gimmicks. As much as I want the shows to stick with whatever gimmick the show began with, such as Saber and Build's mix-and-match gimmick, I can understand why the shows step back into the singular upgrades for the rest of the show. Less toys to sell, and it's a lot more simple to market a single toy for a form whether than having Golden Monkey Form work with Random Saturn Toy. A lot of people say "too much plastic", but I dunno if that's such a bad thing. More money, sure. The only downside is frontloading each show before "upgrades, people, upgrades" starts playing on the loudspeaker. I can't really explain why I like the gimmick toys so much. Maybe it's the idea that your powerset isn't confined to a singular belt. Maybe it's the trope of heroes and villains fighting over the trinkets. Maybe it's the heroes activating the toys with such vigor and ferocity that makes me giddy whenever a serious moment pops up. I like jingles. Noises make brain go brr. Shabadoobie Touch Henshin. Even in serious moments, I love jingles. I don't mind them. They're like a sign everything will be all right. If a scene blocks out the jingles, like the Blood Stalk VS Build fight scene in the rain during Rabbit Tank Sparkling's debut episode, that's also pretty cool. I love early Heisei belts (and early Phase 2, up to Fourze). Most of them. For as cool and high-tech the newer belts of Reiwa and Heisei Phase 2 are, I feel like the belts of the earlier days have a different pizazz to them. They feel a bit more clunkier. The belts feel distinct, between heroes and villains alike. Ryuki's and Kabuto's are mostly the same across all riders, and I both love and hate that uniformity. I can't properly convey what I mean, so here are some examples. Den-O and Zeronos. Fourze and Meteor. Double and Accel. I know I said I wouldn't be putting any post-Fourze Phase 2 or Reiwa examples, but Zero-One and Vulcan, and Drive and Mach. You get what I'm getting at, right? Each belt feels different and has a similar yet new way to get to your forms. I kinda miss that, in a way. Most shows have the heroes share the same type of belt. Others cram a buncha repaints/retools in your face (glares at Zero-One). I just kinda like that sorta thing, you know? Where the belts were different enough and looked really cool overall. This is turning into some sort of "pining for the old days" post; I'm not exactly complaining about how the franchise has turned on its head, I just like the "feel" of the older belts. Let's talk about Sentai for a bit. I like how Kyuranger's changer can be held like a gun. My hand is too small for the bracer form, so the alternative is nice. ToQger's brace is a work of legend though; railroad crossing thing and the transformation motion echoes a train passing through one while the guard rail is down?! Amazing. Kyuranger's suits are also really cool. Just a slight bit of differences to each suit, such as the helmets, or Garu's fur, Stinger's tail or Raptor's wings, while the rest of the costume is uniform. Shinkenger also did that for the helmets. Actually most Sentai do. The helmets are all different, with only the colors changing on the uniform. I like that. I also like how each team generally does the same choreographed motion. As much as I like each hero having a different pose, seeing a group of 5, 6, or 12 people doing the same motions with cool angles thrown in, is just magnificent. And then there's some of the indie or outside-of-Japan toku. I love Legend Hero. I like the poses and the suits and how wholesome it feels. BIMA's suits are also pretty nice. And while it was short-lived, Spheres was also a pretty cool series. So were X-Strider and Kamen Rider Asura (I made a playlist here). Frubask is 10/10. And I just love the passion that goes into the genre, regardless of if you're a big production company or a random guy with a camera, some costumes, and Adobe After Effects. Okay, Ultraman time, here we go. In regards to my belt paragraph, I love Ultra transformation devices. They're all handheld, and I can actually fit my adult hands through any handles or bracelets on the toy. It's so nice! You can look at an image of any of the transformation devices and, provided you know at least some Ultraman stuff, should be able to pick out a couple of said devices just based on looks alone. The devices are sometimes shared among other heroes and villains, yes. And, yes, Rider and Sentai devices are pretty much the same way. But Ultra hits different, if that makes any iota of sense. On top of that, Ultraman does exactly what I miss about final form weapons; it gives me more of them. Whether the weapon be as simple as the Orbcalibur or Belialrok, or more complex like the King Sword or the Zero mode Geed Riser, the weapons always come with (or activate) the form. And I love that a lot. They just scan in a toy or say a chant with your friends at your side and bling bling bling you got a sword (or whatever) that gives you your strongest form to date. It's so cool. But I guess I should prolly just say what I like about the shows in general. I've talked about toys for way too long. I like the special effects for transformations. Shout "Electroplate" and random poses happen amidst cheesy particle effects that converge on the hero, creating a suit. Plop in an Eyecon or Progrise Key, and your armor attacks your opponent before hopping onto you (sometimes to hilarious results). "Stand behind the white line" and if you do you get knocked silly (or the shadow line "stand behind the black line" variant used for a "which side is 'behind'" gag). "Ultraman Z Alpha Edge" as random colored lines zippity doo da into the center of the screen for an explosive Ultra rise. Seeing multiple heroes do their poses and whatnot, especially if they got something going on in the background (Zi-O's clocks come to mind) that goes with the transformation, is also pretty dang cool. I just... I love it all. Henshin! I love how the actors get into funny jokes by themselves. Fuwa's actor had a youtube channel. Tetsuya Iwanaga ad-libbed the laugh during the big Emu reveal. Izu ad-libbed her random hand motions behind Aruto that one episode (I forget which, but it was one of Zero-One's early-mid episodes). It's nice seeing everyone having fun. The cheapness of it all. Stock footage, semi-okay CGI, reused sound effects (belt clanking *gacha* and belt attaching to waist *krrr-shck* come to mind). Spark packs. The seams in a suit. Zippers. Dollar store bubble guns. It's all so cute. The theme song powerups. Or insert songs. Either way, gimme a song playing during a fight scene and I will love you forever. I love how sleek some of the suits are. Brave Dragon, Kiba/Kiva, the ToQgers overall, Shishi Red, Zero-Two, Mugen, Infinity. They just look so cool. I also like how a lot more foreign actors/musicians have seemingly been getting into the genre. Commander Hilltop (Ike Nwala) and the Geartlinger announcer (Lenne Hardt) come to mind more often than not. Like, yo, let's get hyped with a wrestling announcer. But Kyoryu Cyan (Robert Baldwin) and Monkey Majik are also standouts. I dunno if I can name any others, TBH. |

With toku there's such a love for these series coming from the actors, for many it's a launching point in their career or sometimes it almost seems like an acting tradition for other actors to play a Kamen Rider at some point in their careers. The fact that people like Takeda have played more than one major role really does show a love for it. It's more than just a paycheck, especially for the major cast. You're working with the cast and crew for a year ongoing, and I bet it does leave an impact on you. And for most, it seems to be a positive one. Positive enough to want to come back later on at some point just because you want to, so long as scheduling allows it. |
I get that it's mainly due to censorship, but one thing I've always appreciated about Power Rangers is its continued focus on platonic relationships between men and women. If there's one thing I can't stand in most stories, it's when a male character and female character are paired up because, hey, guys and girls can't just simply be friends! Having actual good chemistry, things in common, dating? Nah, not needed.
So yeah, very glad that PR tends to focus alot more on natural friendships then on forced romance. |
After seeing MMPR - Super Ninja Steel I started watching the Toei source shows Power Rangers adapted.
In 2021 I managed to fill in Kyo Ryu and Gosei thus making it now possible to see all the shows including Go Busters ( Beast Morphers) and Ryu Soul (Dino Fury) Once I finish both I'll be current for the shows adapted for Power Rangers. I have the Malaysian sets due to the fact I have no internet at my place. |
I seriously love the passing of the torch segments from one red ranger to the next after the end of each Sentai series which became a major tradition of the franchise ever since the end of Dekaranger.
|
I checked where I was at for shows I'm
watching on DVD so having tracked down the disks I need last night I can get caught up Zyu (Beast) Ranger - Kira Mage Ranger on DVD. All episodes post Hurricane Ranger are Malaysian releases. (Bouken and Go Busters from Brazil but NTSC format.) The sticking point will now be 1975 - Jet Man. |
Can we gush about the film crew, especially the stuntmen? Because they have been working on Tokusatsu for decades, yet the fight scenes always feel energetic, down to the choreography and editing.
Sure sometimes the choreography can look weak (the SHT films comes to mind) and lately they do try new things and/or up the ante a bit (like how Zero-One featured a more, I don't know, dynamic is the word?) but the fight scenes will never bore you. |
Can we take a sec to appreciate how awesome this song is?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHtBc4HiD14 Probably my favorite Final Form Theme so far. |
I know right? Now Is The Right Time is one of my favorite final form themes, other than Cosmic Mind. I love how hype it is. Feels like the perfect song to mix with Find A New Life.
