Do you want Toku to become more mainstream
Ok, I was reading through the Ultraman wikipedia and, apparently, Ultraman Max is going to air on an american TV Network, TOKU, in February. Putting aside how... surreal that is, it got me thinking about the recent efforts being made to bring Toku legally to america. Compared to anime, the Tokusatsu fanbase is niche at best and the genre doesn't really have a hold in american outside of Power Rangers. While this can be a bit of a shame, there are certain benefits to having a rather small fandom instead of a large one. Would you guys be interested in the Tokusatsu genre becoming more mainstream?
Here's where I read the Ultraman Max thing, if your interested. http://tokusatsunetwork.com/2017/01/...ax-next-month/ |

I wouldn't be opposed to Toku gaining more traction in mainstream media.
I was never really one for the hipster style. I don't feel toku is better while it's "Underground" or however you want to put it. With Shout doing the unthinkable and releasing Sentai DVDs and Ultraman airing on American airwaves again, I'm pretty happy. I would love to see more. I may be that asshole that downloads entire series simply to avoid buying the DVDs, it doesn't mean I don't love the fact that we're getting them at all :lol |
I'd call it 50/50. It's niche enough that I always feel like there's some new oddity to discover that hasn't been talked to death like how anime seems to be these days.
OTOH, I get a thrill whenever I see people discover and become obsessed with the same things I do, so more mainstream awareness/acceptance would be nice. |
If it means KR figuarts will be more widely available and Sentai figuarts will come back then yes.
|
Sure. I would love for more people to enjoy tokusatsu and the possibility of DVDs, Toys etc. getting more widely available.
|
I wouldn't mind Adult Swim making a deal with Shout! Factory and Toei to show Super Sentai seasons a year after they're released on DVD/BluRay. Or maybe go a different direction. I know it's been said before, but someone dubbing Kamen Rider for Adult Swim or Toonami. Probably Toonami. Or even a network like Starz. That'd be nice.
|
I'm afraid a toku dub airing on Toonami would be a gag dub. I know they take their anime seriously, but toku in the west is still seen as dumb poses and explosions...

Comcast doesn't have any Toku network. At least, mine doesn't.
Of course I want Toku to be more popular. The bigger it is the better it is for us. It would mean more franchises getting official video releases (instead of just streams) and more theatrical releases. Perhaps even more merchandise carried over. Hell, I wish Toku could have an explosion of popularity like anime had 15 years ago. That's why I keep talking about the Sentai DVD releases from Shout!, buying copies to give away at cons as prizes, and with Garo coming out (hopefully soon and not the 5 years Sentai is taking with Big O), this is our chance to show we want more. |

It would be cool to have Japanese henshin heroes to be more well known in the US. We are getting some new giant monster movies lately, so I do think the demand for giant monster flicks is better now compare to 10-20 years. Also Toku is more than just superheros and kajiu, I would like to see more people respect Japanese film making and look at Japanese special effects more than just cheap looking Z graded film making. As someone who love Japanese Sci-Fi films at a young age, I always love the use of rubber suits and miniatures. Hollywood mostly uses CG while Japan still tries to keep things practical. |
I'd love for Super Sentai to gain more traction in the U.S. The Shout Factory DVDs are a step in the right direction but starting with the point where Power Rangers started isn't exactly my favorite idea (though I understand why).
It'd be nice to take this as an opportunity to air the Sentai shows that America hasn't even reckoned with yet...in other words, GoBusters, ToQger and Zyuohger. Kamen Rider would also get a place there. |
I would like it to get more mainstream attention only so I can have friends to talk about it with since I only have here and the SHT live stream to talk about it. Though that would mean I would have to get friends >w>

If the new PR movie is popular, it can get newbies to look into watching the original source material of the PR series. I somewhat doubt it since most casual people are not into sub titled films and shows, but it would be cool though.
|
The only thing I see th new movie doing is pleasing the people that think Power Rangers should be dark and angsty with no substance, just Bayplosions.
|
People need to create their own tokus outside of Japan somehow.

If you mean by superheroes inspire by Kamen Rider, Super Sentai or Ultraman. I remember we have a few that do.
|
Does anybody know any kids that want to see the movie? Because the one thing I know the older do not want is high school drama crap so who is it aimed for?

Also also, that animated Guillermo Del Toro show on Netflix, Trollhunters, is a Kamen Rider show in all aspects except for it being animated and made in English. We know Del Toro is a huge toku fan cause... Freaking Pacific Rim. Yet another example of non-Japanese toku. Non-Japanese toku is like, allllllllllll over the place these days if you look hard enough. |

Tokusatsu just means "Special Effects" just like anime means Animation. In Japan, any movie or TV show with large use of special effects is Toku. Not all Toku is Henshin superheroes or giant monsters. I would not call Doctor Who and Pacific Rim toku at all if you ask me.

I feel like if it's made and produce in Japan, it should be Toku. Same goes with something like Anime (I know anime are cartoons too. People consider something anime if it's produced in Japan. That's why The Boondocks and Avatar: The Last Airbender is not consider to be anime by most people).

Like you say correctly say this is just another variant of the "is anime only animation from Japan, or all animation" argument. It's the name of a medium that's evolved to mean only a certain section of its original intention to Westerners. |
Pacific Rim sure fits the Tokusatsu label to me:
After all it's live action Giant Robos beating the crap outta Kaiju. |
Just looked up if the channel is available in my area. Unless I get AT&T U-Verse (ugh, no!), then nope. :thumbdown
|
Pacific Rim is Kaiju, not Toku.
I know Toku means special effects, but when we talk of Toku, we are specifically speaking of things like Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Gransazer, Spectreman, Kikaider, Garo, etc. |
Quote:
And even disregarding that Pacific Rim has more in common with Sentai or Ultraman then Kaiju films like Godzilla as it's human controlled Giant Robots fighting giant monsters. |
No, Pacific Rim is toku. Godzilla is toku. Gamera is toku.
"Kaiju" is a genre in the same way "henshin hero" is. |
Can we just accept that when most people say "Toku," they're saying it in specific reference to kaiju, henshin heroes, and the like?
Everything except for Soap Operas are Toku these days. Scrubs is tokusatsu. Fucking iCarly is Toku. Toku isn't a genre. |

Toku technically already is mainstream, I mean, hell, all of the Marvel movies would be considered toku.
Now, if we're referring to henshin heroes, yeah, I'd like to see it gain more mainstream popularity. I think the vast majority of these shows are legitimately worth watching and have a lot of themes that both kids and adults can appreciate it, so long as people don't just take one quick look at the suit design and assume everything is going to be like Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. |
