This show really taxes my meager brain power when it comes time to remember everything that happens in a given episode. Where do I even begin with this one? I find the implication that Tarou believes there is not a single thing even remotely praiseworthy about his companions to be pretty hilarious. Probably like, deeply telling of his character too or something, but even before that, it just seems about right for this team? Total bunch of misfits so lacking in traditionally heroic qualities that their own leader dies trying to think of one nice thing to say about them? That's probably not even the most important thing to take away from that scene though, and that moment is but one of many, many threads this episode weaves together. It's impressively dense, even by Donbrothers' insane standard. I felt like the monster this week was notably more fleshed out than they've been lately, for one thing. Obnoxiously loud self-important lady who needs to be the center of everything is a perfect fit for a villain themed after the deliberately gaudy and loud (even by Sentai's insane standards) Kyoryuger. But even she isn't that important to the overall episode, is she? Beyond being a monster to fight, her biggest contribution is distracting Haruka from asking Kaito what his deal is again. Maybe it's all that lore that gets dropped here? That seems pretty important! So much gets revealed all at once I'd be lying if I told you I felt like I was keeping up with it right away. But yeah, somewhat abruptly, the audience has been informed of Tarou's origins, and in typical fashion, the answers given here are only liable to lead to more questions. The story just keeps expanding in ways that ensure it will never stop expanding. We've got a whole royal family in the picture now, and that's definitely got me curious. Here I was thinking I was so clever for guessing Tarou was related to the Nouto, like I'd figured it all out, when in reality, that fact by itself is but one piece of a puzzle. And I don't even know how many pieces there are total! This thing's a lot bigger than I thought it'd be! Don Momotaro might not be all that humbled by the end of this one, but I definitely was. (Although on that note, it's also pretty great that he starts actively insulting his team when they show up to help? It's downright impossible to tell once he's transformed, but I like the idea that he took the boycott thing that personally.) Or wait! Who cares about any of that stuff! No, if there's any Inoue staple here that's most important to me, it isn't the year-long web of mysteries gradually being unraveled, and, shocking as it may be, it's not how aggressively ill-mannered the protagonists are either. When it comes to beats this writer loves to hit, there are few that get me as invested as two people becoming friends at the same their alter egos are bitter enemies. Tarou and Sonoi have basically done a speedrun of the first stretch of that sort of arc, and while that may make it seem like a lesser copy of something that's been done before, I think there's a merit to doing this big internal reveal so quickly? It's more or less forcing the relationship between the two to play out differently from how Inoue has done this before, because now we have most of the series to see how they develop from this point, rather than focusing on building up that irony until the halfway point or later. Essentially, we're getting something completely different at the same time we're getting something immensely familiar. Hypothetically, anyway. I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself now. It just goes to show how invested I am in this dynamic already though. Tarou and Sonoi's few scenes together have all left quite the impression -- more than enough to make the drama here land. I think an element that makes their budding friendship particularly sad to watch fall apart is how calm they both are about it? Tarou isn't quite as stoic as Sonoi, but they're both composed enough to just politely acknowledge that things aren't going to work out, even though you can tell it's killing them both a little on the inside. It's also killing Tarou a *lot* on the outside, too, which made for one heck of an ending. It's a pretty brutal moment for Sonoi, who would of course have no qualms about performing his duty, which just makes everything even sadder. This is one of those things Inoue can be really great at. The tragedy this episode leaves off on is a direct result of the characters being chained by their own personalities. Tarou can't help but tell the truth, even when it isn't a good idea, and Sonoi can't help but take every opportunity to eliminate a threat, even if cutting down evil means cutting down everything good that comes with it. |
Donbrothers has thoroughly impressed me, nobody could have predicted from the silly premise there'd be such complex and loveable characters with so much going on in the story plot-wise and thematically. It's definitely helped by Inoue's work, but it just seems like in general they're really going balls-to-the-walls with this season and Sentai conventions. I can't believe it's already been 13 episodes, feels like just yesterday it premiered. I hope future seasons are more like this.

I wonder how long they will be able to keep up with Inuzuka and Miho/Natsumi skit of just missing each other on the street. :D
Also, Kaito seems to have some hosting experience in the past. :D |
Has it been explained why Tarou's personality shifts so drastically when transformed? Like, the stark contrast to how he speaks to Sonoi when untransformed, despite just learning of his identity, compared to how he acts while morphed is so jarring.

Man, Donbrothers......
-To get this out of the way, I know some folks might consider this to be a lesser variant to a certain relationship in Inoue's past works, not enough bulidup and whatnot. But like......that kind of slow-burn actually doesn't fit these characters at all?! Taro and Sonoi are like, guys don't beat around the bush? When something needs to be done, they *do* it. Comparing these 1000% "on the offensive" types to Takkun and Yuji, one playing the part of a relucant hero for a good chunk of his show and another just trying to make sure him and his Opernoch buddies live through the day, it's clear that it's not the best comparsion to make. Besides......cutting this relationship super short-before it even had to grow buds, much less blossom!-is just wonderfully tragic in my opinion, and fits them well. I respect anyone who felt otherwise, tho. -The Don Family loredump, it's super interesting. Since Dragoku also shares the Don title, they're related? (I've heard Taro can be used as kind of an suffix to denote the eldest son, and it seems like our new friend's name is commonly used for second sons, so...) Just when you thought we'd spent the next few episodes unraveling the Juuto and their intentions, Inoue drops another box of possiblities onto us. Kinda reminds me of how Agito's mysteries were handled... -Speaking of new friend, Jiro seems like a sweet kid. I'm sure I'll like him. I've seen very few Sentai, but killing your main so that the sixth can replace them-gotta be one of the more intentive ways to introduce them, right? |
Man, all that stuff with Tarou and Sonoi was vintage Faiz and I am absolutely here for it. I honestly didn't realize how much I missed some of this stuff until it was back in front of me again.

Sonoi really did not waste time exploiting Taro's inability to lie...

It's humorous how Kaito is like Inoue's self-insert, with his "no explanation, no problem!" approach to anything that doesn't serve the complex human drama.
There's a nice parallel between Tarou and Zyudenki. Both of them are arrogant (to the point where Tarou even criticizes Saruhara's arrogance, projecting much?) and push people away, but this comes from a feeling of loneliness. It's a clever deconstruction of the Mary Sue type Reds like King from Kyoryuger, showing that a good leader isn't the strongest, but the one who puts their trust in their teammates. Tarou may not be at the point where he can admit this yet, but the way he calls everybody fools seems like overcompensation. Tarou can't lie, but maybe he can deceive. Saruhara takes the role of SIC here, befitting his cool personality as he stands up for his teammates by forcing Tarou to confront his own weakness, resulting in a confused Inubrother and Don Momotarou being attacked by all the Noto, who just learned that he's related to the Don Clan that devastated their world. Saruhara is also the first to Morph after realizing Don Momotarou needs their help. However, it might be a few episodes before we can see more of Tarou's development, now that he's been killed. I mean, we've already seen him die twice before, but this time there isn't even a body! I previously brought up the similarity between Tarou's and Sonoi's friendship and Takumi's and Kiba's friendship, so upon seeing the trailer for this episode, I knew it was going to be something tragic. I do think it's good timing how Don Onitaijin, which debuted last episode, ended up being Don Momotarou's critical weakness that Sonoi exploits to destroy him. It makes sense that Don Robotarou being the center of the Gattai would be the one who takes the most strain and it's symbolic of Tarou as well, with how he takes all the responsibility on himself due to his lack of trust in his companions. I'm amazed Momoi and Sonoi know each others identifies already. I thought for sure that would happen during the 30s episode wise given Inoue.

Funny that you mention Ninja Steel, since its Alter will be used by Don Dragoku.
