SO-DO, SO-DO Chronicle and Shodo Candy Toy Thread
Since this line was being discussed elsewhere, I figured a thread was needed. I don't have pics of mine yet, but so far I have several OOO and Den-O Sodo candy toys. They're cheap, simple, fun little figures that come mostly assembled with a little bit of paint here and there and stickers for the rest.
Technically these have been around since Ex-Aid but no threads really about them. (they've been mentioned in the Minipla thread but not really discussed) The build ones especially were quite good and the Zero-One line seems to be great so far. |
Hey, thanks for doing this! I've put an order in for a case/set/whatever of the Build Genius wave, and I'm psyched to see what this line is like. It'll be cool to have a place to check out what other figures people have. This'll be fun!
|
I have a box of the Kuuga set pre-ordered. They look fun.
|
I started collecting this line with Build, skipped Zi-O, Den-O and some of the P-Bandai stuff, but I'm going strong on collecting Zero-One. So happy that the complete boxes now include as many bodies as you need, it makes collecting them in the US so much easier!
|
Yeah, it’s nice that the cases contain everything you need. I had to buy extra Batta legs and Tora arms because I picked up the OOO set rather than the case.
|
Speaking of OOO, I finally stickered up my wave 1 case. Had to open the Spare Taka head, I accidentally ripped the little forehead sticker the first time. The figures all look fantastic, and I love how with the way the parts per box works out, you get a spare stand to use with Ankh. Just need to get the stickers on the Ginga I got from the HLJ black Friday mystery bag and I'll be caught on all the So-Do I have

I'm not sure which ones I want to go after next, maybe Build? But I'd probably only really want RabbitTank and Cross-Z. I should take some pics of my OOO and Den-O ones. I'd go for W but I hate how most of them are exclusives, and thus crazy overpriced on Mandarake. I can't wait until they do Gaim, unless of course they make most of them exclusive as well. :/ |
Yeah, I don't really need HeatMetal and LunaTrigger, or CycloneJoker Gold Xtreme, but all the other W figures I wish weren't so crazy expensive. I'd have preferred the retail set include Xtreme instead of Joker, seems like Joker would have been better as an exclusive than W's final form. Also, if you just want Build and Cross-Z, have you looked into the Dai So-Do set? Includes the special version of the two with more paint, along with the swirly pipes thing that forms around Build when he changes between half-bodies. It's pretty cool, and I'm pretty sure it's not too expensive on Mandarake, not as bad as W stuff. I know the Dai So-Do set with Grease and Rogue goes for only around ¥3000
|
Thanks for the heads up on Cross-Z and Build. That's actually a pretty neat gimmick for a set, and would certainly be the easiest way to get them both, though if I want to make the most of it I'll need a random Build mixmatch to display on it. :D

So-Do Chronicle is doing W again, because of course it is. Premium Bandai.

It's playable in Climax Heroes OOO if that is any consolation. This should be the final W Chronicle set unless by some miracle they do FangTrigger from the manga.
|
Yeah this last SODO update was basically them saying "Hey, did you know we're comprehensive? Because we're really comprehensive". And I kind of love it.
The Zero-One wave includes a box of random weapons purely so Grand Zi-O can have the Agito Flame saber he used for 10 seconds. This toyline is just wonderful |
I hate that I have to get Eternal and CycloneAccel to get Booster.
|
Y'know, it's fun to see so many different suits get made as toys, because it allows me to think, "Wait, did I watch W?" Like, that Eternal with the red flames on it? "CycloneAccel"? I would not have doubted someone who claimed these were fanmade designs.
That said, bless them for making figures out of literally every single suit, since that means anything I liked that's shown up onscreen for at least a frame has a shot. |
I feel like the slots for Kashin and the accessory pack could've been used for another more interesting figure like Ikazuchi or Type-1.

I'm pretty sure they actually already confirmed Ikazuchi was in production too? |

Just to give an overview of the situation with Zi-O holdover, they ran into issues with the Quartzers and Zi-O Oma Form which delayed them from being in RIDE 11 and Tsukiyomi was far too late for them to work into the current set so all four were promised to be in 01 retail lines. Along with them Kasshin after being released in Ride Plus 2 was promised to be but on a retail set so people can troop build him better.
Ikazuchi is also early in production as of 3-4 weeks ago so depending on turn around time it could be in AI 05 as they have not said they are moving on to 06 just yet. 001 and Type-1 will see releases but maybe worked into later sets as to base things off known toy release information there is not a lot of show material to cover a full monthly box so things are being shuffled around to ensure a 3-5 figure set every month. |
so are these figures good? how do they look next to a Figuart?
|
The articulation is pretty good, and better in each subsequent line. Ex-Aid figures are a little lacking, but the Zero-One line has just about everything you could ask for on a figure of this size and cost. They're smaller than figuarts, around the 3 3/4 inch size. Here's Zero-One and OOO next to Gold Drive. (Sorry for the horrible phone pic)

Yeah, the figures are extremely good for the asking price; but unless you're super liberal about scale then they're not quite gonna work in a figuarts display, lol.
|
So, I'm looking around at stuff on HLJ, and they've got a listing for SHODO figures. Not being familiar with the term, I looked it up on the Wiki, and it says SHODO is a Showa-focused SO-DO subline. Now, I don't truck with Showa, but there're a few cool Heisei figs in that line, and some of them are still available online.
The thing is, though, what is the difference between SHODO and SO-DO figs, manufacturing-wise? They look to be the same scale, they're not too much more expensive, but I don't think they use stickers. Do they use stickers? The pictures I'm seeing online look fully painted. Is the articulation and scale the same? I don't want to get a SHODO Hibiki fig and then find out it doesn't mesh with my (theoretical) SO-DO figs. Anyone here pick up those SHODO figures? Thoughts on them? |

Left: SO-DO Right: SHODO SO-DOs mostly requires you to buy the base body and armor parts individually, some DIY required with the stickers and assembling the figure. SHODO is all-in-one, has some painting applied although not super detailed, minimal assembly required. |
I have several SHODO (as well as Motion Revive) figures and I like them quite a bit. There are no stickers to deal with, plus there's Kaijin.
|
Okay, cool, thanks! To be clear, are the SHODO figs different molds than the SO-DO figs? Or are they the same mold with paint applied? Those two Kuugas look minorly different, so I'm a little curious.
|
Aren't Shodo slightly smaller than So-Do?

This... this is getting complicated. And potentially expensive. I really like the idea of a box of cheap figs, deep cuts from a show I like, and I'm okay putting them together and decorating them. But, like, I don't know that I'll be playing with them. It'll probably just be something I put on a shelf. So the SHODO stuff, higher-end versions of main suits and secondary Riders... I don't know, they look real good. Maybe I'll (and I can't believe I'm saying this, I have a sickness) do both? Not everything, but, like, getting the SHODO CycloneJoker and the SO-DO other forms for W, for example? If they're the same scale, I don't care that much if the articulation's different or some have different decos. I guess I'm going to have to try out the SHODO line, too? I don't know. I don't know! You guys are being too helpful! It's making it too easy to spend money! |

I'm so sorry for what we've done to you
|
to be fair, SODO is cheap enough that you can probably complete and entire show's cast, alt forms and all for far less than what an average Figuarts will run you these days lol.

But these SO-DO figs, these goddamn SO-DO figs... they're so cheap, individually, that it's easier to just get whatever looks cool. A whole case of a series, with four to six figs and maybe some accessories, it's less than half what I'd pay for a Figuarts. What a deal! Hell, at those prices I can get a couple series! And, man, it'd be cool to have every Build form, and the W ones are fairly recent, and I love OOO, and and and all of a sudden I'm spending way more on SO-DO figs than I'd maybe be spending on getting a Figuarts a month. That's my fear, that the collector bug takes over and I'm scouring Mandarake for a HBV-only Build form that I don't really love but now I'm paying $40 with shipping to own it because it's the only one I'm missing. I'm worried (maybe unnecessarily, I haven't even messed around with these figs, maybe I'll hate them) that a hundred or so "cheap toys" will feel a lot less cheap to my bank account. Anyway, that's how my broken brain works. I haven't even started enjoying something and I'm projecting my financial ruin. How's your Saturday going? |
Ok, so who thinks set 5 should be called Zi-O featuring Zero-One?
|
That's basically what it is, though that's generally to be expected when there also isn't really any Zero-One stuff to do except Metal Cluster, Zero Zero One, Ichigata, and... uh... the Kangaroo one? Oh, and they confirmed the dodo one to be in development too. Meanwhile, Zi-O left these guys with a LOT of stuff to do. Kinda surprised to see Geiz Majesty this early, though!
We've still got Tsukuyomi and the three summer movie riders to go too, so I totally expect the next wave to be that lot plus Metal Cluster. Zero-One's had a surprisingly small amount of suits despite all the riders, so this was just natural. |
