Positivity and Negativity
Inspired by a recent trend on Twitter, I’ve decided to start up a new thread wherein users post one GOOD thing about a show they HATE and one BAD thing about a show they LOVE. The only rule is that you aren’t allowed to talk about aesthetics in either thing, but everything else about the show is fair game. I’ll get us started.
Beet. J Stag is one of the most entertaining 6th Heroes in Sentai. Ryusei was wasted after Aries got defeated. |
Neat topic!
I incredibly did not like the Amazons movie, but I respect both the insane Big Swing of the story they were trying to tell, and that they never really blinked in portraying the inevitable, tragic consequences of Jin's choices. Not a good movie or a good story, but it definitely was trying for something. I love OOO, but, man, that theme song! Probably my least favorite Kamen Rider theme song. Never ever got into it. |
Positive: Banno was a great villain who I still genuinely love.
Negative: Making the Utopia Dopant the "big bad" feels really tacked on and unnecessary. And for one I didn't post on Twitter: Positive: The OOO, Kabuto, Hibiki, Agito, Blade, and Ghost tributes in Zi-O were all wonderful and felt very natural and faithful to their original series. Negative: The finale of Kiva SUCKS. |
He has his positives, but Grease consistently sticks out as the worst character of Build for me and one that I just can't bring myself to like. Every good trait he has and every well-done part of his story is brought down by him having the most unlikeable and downright creepy personality that he never grows out of.
While Kiva often failed to use its gimmick of telling both a Past and Present story effectively, Rook's introduction is one that stands out as actually taking advantage of the gimmick. You get to see Rook in the present day as this gentle giant; an almost childlike naivety and innocence contrasted with his past self as an unstoppable killing machine. It was genuinely quite well done. |
Cool idea. Will try to think of a non-KR post later on. But for now...
Black RX had the banana shaman. The absolute ridiculousness of not only the monster, but the scenario of the episode in general highlighted something I actually admired about RX; Knowing that it was silly and having fun with itself. That alone made the show worth watching, even if I feel it's one of the weakest Showa entries. As for OOO, I've made everyone hate me for it before and I'll do so again. I am probably the only person who's seen OOO who absolutely hates Akira Date. He's such an uncaring dick that I can't ever help but think "Man I'd be so tempted to slap this guy if he existed around me in real life." I can't even count his friendship with Goto as a positive considering the reveal that he only ever even reached out to Goto because he was paid to. OOO would've had my all around favorite cast if not for him. |
Well, still Rider related instead of plot but there you go...
Positivity: Ghost has a great fighting scene in epsiode 44 between Mugen Ghost and Ganmaizer, where they clash and use everything they have, the exact fighting choreography I'm looking for. Negativity: Fourze Cosmic State (though many other final forms also have a case of this) is so underused, there are gigantic amounts of Switch combinations that can be done, but the one appeared can only be counted in 2 hands. |
Positivity: Even though I seem to be this forum's rare designated W-Hater(lol), I did actually really like Accel as a suit and character and would've much preferred a show about him!
Negativity: The one Boukenger member who didn't click with me quite so much was Masumi, he was perfectly fine and everything but for some reason he just didn't seem as great a character as the rest. I suppose it's just because he was the 'rebel' of the team. |
Positive: It's clear there was a lot of passion behind Zi-O, and the legend Rider tributes definitely got better as the show went on.
Negative: Honestly, I've got a few negative things I could say about Build despite it being my first and favorite series. I agree with Kurona about Kazumi being horrible. His fetishistic obsession with Misora is creepy and uncomfortable, and it's stupid how the show makes a big deal of her finally calling him by his real name even though he never refered to her as anything other than Mii-Tan. Second biggest issue is the idea of power levels. It's a silly concept, and makes fights seem cheap. Whoever has the highest power level wins, just expose yourself to more gas if you want to get stronger. I get that the constant escalation of power relates to the show's themes of war, and that they've gotta sell toys, but it still took me out of it sometimes, exemplified by the time Evolt dropped out of the sky, checked announced everyone's hazard level, then disappeared. Last big problem isn't quite as bad. The pacing in Build was odd. Things moved at a lightning pace up untill the second tournament arc, slowed down for a few episodes, went back to the lightning pace afterwards with Evolt taking over, then after Pandora box was activated and the end of the world seemingly started, everything stopped again for what felt like ages for the Lost Bottles to be collected and for the papa Katsuragi arc. After that, the last few episodes were fantastic again, but the pacing in Build could be inconsistent, and I remember some people feeling like during the faster parts, it was moving too fast. |
Positive: There were a bunch of moments in Gaim I liked, despite being disappointed with the season as a whole (it might have just been overhyped to me, IDK). Bravo being simultaneously a flamboyant fountain of camp and a deadly competent fighter was a joy to watch, I liked the uneasy truces when the hero riders had to work together with Yggdrasil despite knowing they couldn't trust each other, and that episode where all the dance crews joined together was really sweet.
Negative: W's forms and transformations all seem really plain in comparison to a lot of other riders. I have mixed feelings about the increasingly elaborate transformations and form announcements of late Heisei riders, but with W's motif of words, memories and data, it would have been really cool and fitting for the driver to recite a little catchphrase about each form, whether they were unique for each combination, or each memory having half a catchphrase that could be mixed and matched and still make sense. |
Positive: The comrade between the Extermination Squad, Haruka, and Mamoru was my favorite part of Amazons.
Negative: Hazard Levels were a mistake. |
Positive: the main mecha from Goseiger, in its base form, is a pretty great design.
Negative: Ex-Aid never really did a great job of explaining what was up with the whole "level select" gimmick other than an obvious relocation to Toei's stock filming sites. |
Going with my absolute favourite and least favourite here.
Positive: The idea of a story told across two separate time periods in Kiva is a super cool idea! It also works very well with the show on a thematic level. I would love to see this concept used again! Negative: I think even the most avid Build fans will admit that the pacing is pretty wack at times. The pacing issues are severe enough to drag the whole experience down a level or two for me, so it only narrowly edges out W as my favourite, which is really well paced imo. |
Positive: The alternate worlds in Decade allowed for some very interesting looks at different tales Kamen Rider could offer with similar characters. It's a fun concept that could carry a show on it's own.
Negative: Leangle felt like too big of a waste in Blade. Mutsuki spent far too much time under the Spider Undead's control, and it requiring Shima/Tarantula Undead and the Tiger Undead sacrificing themselves to break that control took both too long and really dragged down Mutsuki as a character. |
Positive: Beast Morphers has a lot of effort and it is technically a good show.
The middle of Ghost is pretty damn great (from the moment Necrom debuts and until Deep Specter debuts) , on par with the rest of the Rider shows. It's just too bad that when Mugen debuts, the show went downhill again. Negative: Build clearly has writing issues and it seems like stuff was made up as they go along rather than being planned from the start. Idk, the whole Banjo is an alien thing felt like it was made up just to justify how he's able to guess Best Match correctly and how his hazard level keeps increasing easily. This basically applied to all Sentai, but Ryusoulger could've been even better. I seriously think that the producers are demanding the writers to either focus on Red all the time, or none of the cast gets development/focus. That being said, at least Ryusoulger is not a Red-spotlight heavy like Kyoryuger and beyond. |
Time for a PR post
Positive: While yeah, it could've still been done better, I did overall like the twist with Mack in Operation Overdrive, and for a show aimed at 10 year olds, they managed to capture having an identity crisis fairly well. Negative: While I don't hate what they did with Sam in SPD like everyone else does, I DO think that it would've been alot better if we'd gotten to know Adult Sam as a human for one episode, THEN have him turned into a ball of light via the side effects of time travel. Maybe have one episode totally devoted to the bad future where Grumm took over. |
