SPOILERS – Power Rangers Dino Fury LGBTQ Representation
As you all know, in the most recent episode in France, we learned that our most recent Green Ranger, Izzy, is part of the LGBTQ community as she walks away at the end of the episode with a young lady named Fern for a date. This is a momentous occasion as it gives viewers and fans the first in-show LGBTQ relationship. While we had some LGBTQ representation in the past, most of the time it was only implied (like with Trini from Power Rangers (2017)) or only in printed material (Ari and Remi’s relationship in the Boom Studios comics)
What are your thoughts of the most recent reveal? (Remember to follow site rules). Personally I’m all for it, cause to me, love is love. As long as you love the person you’re with and they love you back that’s what matters most. |
Awesome!
Also, my Aunt's name is Fern. This is the first time I've ever seen it in a TV show! |
My advice to everyone is to not read any comments on social media about it.
Anyway, I saw the scene yesterday as someone had clipped it. I felt the moment itself was nice, and hopefully it'll pave the way more representation in the future. Haven't watched past the first episode of the show yet, but it seems like Dino Fury keeps giving people more and more reasons to love the Green Ranger, as per usual with this franchise. |
It's about time, I'd say. PR's always been about acceptance and equality and how any and everyone can be a hero, so it only makes sense to finally have a ranger be part of the LGBTQ community.

Strange about the social media thing, cause I know it's being talked about in positive terms amongst some. Also, this franchise may have a history of hesitation, but it has LGBTQ fans, so why would anyone go nuts about this? I love this level of inclusion and hope it shows that there is light out there! I also hope Nick doesn't hesitate and cut the episode, cause that's a step back that nobody needs. If they were smart, they would pause their SpongeBob marathons in favor of a Dino Fury marathon which leads into this episode's debut! Odds are they won't, but one can dream. Here's hoping they'll be seen together in the future! We don't need franchise-changing moments to be one-and-done! |

Sweet!

That's cool!
|
I hate to say this, but this episode actually will air in the middle of October; we gotta air the 3 currently Netflix-exclusive episodes first on TV before the new episodes air

Is this what entertainment is reduced to, cheap brownie points. I don't particular like it when something like this is geared towards kids. Kids want entertainment, not have progressive politics in it.
Funny, if memory serves I don't remember seeing a big post about when Trini in the 2017 Power Rangers movie was supposedly gay. I'm sick of it seeing it in media entertainment, it loses it's value and just following a cheap trend and tokenism just to feel good about yourself. I don't need to kiss up to this stuff to fell like a better person, when I'm confident in myself and right and wrong. |
So if simply walking away with a character at the end of an episode is too explicit and too brownie point-y, how would you go about making a gay character instead?

No one is sucking up to anyone, they're just making it so it include *everyone.* |

But let's be honest, Power Rangers and tokenism go hand in hand ever since the beginning. |
Kids wants representation. Full stop.
Entertainment is meaningless if you can't even relate to it. |
Quote:
I cannot relate to any of the characters or scenarios in Devil May Cry but they still have meaning to me. Entertainment doesn't and shouldn't have to be relatable in order to evoke investment or emotion from your audience. |
Cringing at the "fans" who think this is legitimately a bad thing... lol yikes. This isn't the look you wanna have and be remembered for.
Super happy they did this! It's about time. Hopefully this will pave the way to more representation (: I can't speak for all of us gay fans but I sure do know I appreciate it. |

People find can find meaning in entertainment that they don't relate to. Relatability does not equate to being meaningful. I do think representation matters, though, and that what we're seeing with Izzy is a perfectly fine example of it being done in a kid's show. |
Honestly, as long as it isn't in your face or takes primary place of importance over actual character traits, it doesn't bother me if a character is LGBT or not.
I don't think representation is the problem, but rather the way the issue is presented within media circles. It seems as if some people are more concerned if a media property has the correct amount of representation in it rather than the actual quality of the work itself, subsequently calling those who disagree bigots in the process |
Representation in media is never a problem.
It's how it's done that lands it in either the category of tasteful or ham-fisted. In this case, it was tastefully done. No huge deal made about it, no big speeches, just a natural occurrence that could happen for anyone anywhere and was treated as cute like any other relationship would be shown as. That's what works. You can only call it a problem if it's done with literally no substance or soul other than checking a box on a list to please investors. Then it does nothing for anyone and only makes the community you failed to properly represent look bad because you couldn't be bothered to approach the topic in a way that didn't feel like pandering to suits and that community ends up paying for it as a result. |
Okay, great: Is the show still crap?
Cause I haven't been able to get past episode 2 of a series since RPM ended |
Very cool to have representation. It's too bad it wasn't in a better show.
|
It is pretty nice that Izzy, my favorite of the Dino Fury Rangers gets this.
Quote:
But tbh Dino Fury was average on its beginning episodes, but to me it gets better and better, especially when Green and Black Rangers joins. |
Quote:
As for the topic at hand, it's good, Power Rangers has always tried to celebrate diversity so it's natural for this to happen and I'm glad they're able to do it considering the franchise's history with David Yost and the Dino Thunder censorship from Disney including an open lesbian |

It shows children that two girls in love is a normal thing, something that's okay. And I see nothing wrong with that. Quote:

A gay person existing is 'modern progressive politics'? Huh?

https://i.imgur.com/LUnepAA.jpg I know you technically said TLA but this was too good to pass up. And come on dude, kids don't get "current year politics shoved in their faces", because being gay isn't politics, current year or past, its love. And love is okay. What children get with their live-action shows and cartoons is social commentary, they always have. In the 80's it was "don’t do drugs or you go to hell before you die", during my childhood it was "don’t play with guns" and "stand up to bullies", today its "being yourself is good, no matter who you are and who you love". Also, Netflix She-Ra is for kids, yes, also teenagers and whoever watches cartoons. Little girls get a kickass show with cool princess doing magic stuff; learn that being in love with another girl is a perfectly normal thing, teenagers and adult LGTBQ+ people get to see themselves. I really don't know what your problem with all of this is and why you think this is all about politics. |
Ah, yes, we had two romances in Beast Morphers. No one complained about those, but the moment a hint at a possible same-sex relationship is shown, it's too much.
Love the hypocrisy. It's a relationship. If relationships are something that doesn't belong in kids' shows, then why don't we hear complaints about hetero couples? Children will get it, it's not a complicated subject. Two people just like each other. Simple as that. |
Quote:
And its not like having a gay couple will ruin the show. Owl House, Steven Universe and She Ra all had gay couples and they're all really good (at least in my opinion) You are right that kids don't care about politics, which is why they won't see this as political. No kid watching Dino Fury is going to look at Izzy and Fern and say "this is too political. They're clearly just pandering to the LGBT community". They're just going to see to people dating, just like Nate and Zoey last season and all the other couples in Power Rangers. Being gay isn't political, you're the one making it political. |

More Muslims started playing Watch Dogs Legion and Cyberpunk 2077 because of the addition of hijabs to the wardrobe options. |

FOH. |
You know how bad it is when a douchebag even criticized the other guy for somehow bringing politics into this.

Gay kids exist. I know; I was one of them. Gay kids are usually born to straight parents. Said parents are likely to assume - most of the time correctly, but sometimes very much not - that their kids will also be straight. They'll speak to their kids on the assumption that said kids are not queer, and if they believe nonsense like "mild queer representation on TV is somehow inappropriate for children," they're may well say things that are incredibly hurtful to their children, and have no idea that they're doing so. The question is not whether queer kids are going to be queer, but whether they'll *feel safe* expressing that part of themselves. Also, please be aware that young queer people, if they're raised in a homophobic environment, are disproportionately likely to commit suicide. Cause -> effect. Whether young people feel safe being themselves is literally, in some cases, a matter of life and death. When I was growing up, there was no gay representation available to kids whatsoever. It would have made a seismic difference to me if I'd seen a casual representation of queer love in a kids show. If my parents hadn't believed homophobic nonsense, my path through growing up would've been a lot easier. I grew up and came out in a fundamentally homophobic environment. It thrills me that some kids these days might not have to go through that. This is the direction in which the world is moving. The genie will not go back in the bottle, nor should it. You don't gain anything by treating this thing, which is not about you, as though it's an affront to your sensibilities. Having a negative attitude about queer folks is never going to bring you any kind of happiness. All it will do is bring you frustration and a sense of being left behind. Fortunately, you have a choice in this. You could, if you wanted, decide that maybe a mild representation of lesbian love on Power Rangers isn't an attack on you or your values. I imagine that no one here would think less of you; if anything, I expect you'd gain a little respect. I know I'm always impressed when people manage to overcome their biases. |
This is a cool thing. I’ve never been one for PR, but I might just check out Dino Fury to support this.
|
Once again...why do we care about sexual representation and political stuff?
I don’t give a shit about it. You’re gay, I’m bi or anything you want, who cares? So bottom line is: why is this news worthy? It’s been done to death...or are the US so late mentalitywise that we need representation that much? |

I find it hilarious that someone could say kids don't want politics shoved in their faces and then site A:TLA as an example of what kids want...
...You know the show that dealt with things like public oppression, regimes with brainwashing propaganda, nations occupying other nations whether they wanted it or not, segregation, follow-up material that questioned the morals about separating people from a nation they've woven themselves into without any negative repercussion, need I go on... |
