The devastating secret has at last been revealed- Sento is actually the scientist responsible for the Smash! This drives Ryuga into a fury, knowing the woman he loved was essentially murdered due to Build's actions. Has the Best Match Rider Duo been broken?

that was a seriously cool Rider Kick.
Good fight scenes. (looking forward to the Subbed version tomorrow.) |
Jesus christ Japan doesn't fuck around with terrorist attacks
|
ok im happy we are getting more smash monsters with these 3 guys but i hate to say this, they look like a rejected 80s japanese attempt to weaponize mc hammers pants
|
are we going to get that Template Anti Hero guy again ?
the face looks so familiar to me, i bet his act and role is also similar with the prev series |

Is the Sclash driver Sento is building for Ryuga? It's kinda nice he's always thinking of his love-errr best friend. :D :D :D

Got round to seeing the subbed version.
Honestly this episode was kind of by the numbers. The explanation as to what happened in regards to Katsuragi's "murder" was pretty much what we expected for the most part although the two parts I don't think we were aware of was Katsuragi's desire to quit Faust and the fact that Sento's memory had been erased BEFORE he was even exposed to the Nebula Gas. There's something going on with Soichi which I don't think we will necessarily get answers to for a while, then again this show has never left a mystery hanging for too long. While how this episode played out was kind of predictable, it was a necessary episode just to get the war arc going and up the stakes from 2018 onwards. 2017's section of Build was a good show, but it seems like it's focus is switching when it comes back in January and the addition of the Sclash driver and a new rider is probably going to change how this show feels going forward, at least for now. We're getting Cross-Z Charge and Grease as soon as the new year arrives and given we know Gentoku has been responsible for being the trigger of war in the first place it's likely he will employ the rider system not before too long and use the Crocodile full bottle in some capacity. Just have to hope that amidst a war the plot can find ways to still be engaging for another 30 episodes at least. |
The impression I'm getting from this is that BloodStalk is a war profiteer, dealing arms to all sides, while manipulating Katsuragi/Sento into creating weapons for him. Although there's probably a lot more that we don't know.
Pretty heavy shit for a kid's show, especially given Sento's backstory. |
So here are my thoughts on Build up to and including the current episode.
The thing that keeps me watching is the flashes of inspiration, the strength of the performances and the chemistry between the cast. Everything else about this show, so far for me, has been awful. The show has practically zero identity of its own, drowning in cliches and trite developments continuing the painful homogeneity of toku shows. The emotions never mature, the special effects never improve and the moral compass never becomes more focused. The show does attempt a few swerves but any twist can be seen from another dimension they are so telegraphed and all each twist does is make me aware of how little emotional investment I have in this show. I also don’t care for the actual Rider’s so far. The mostly serious tone of the show completely clashes with the silliness of the Riders (including the villains). What happened to Riders evolving meaningfully? These shows have always been about selling toys, I get that, but Build is a walking advertisement for himself, nothing more and it is so egregious in its execution, everything just makes so much noise, so much shouting and so many sound effects but it is all low quality, painful, nonsense. I can’t concentrate on the action because the Driver is just shouting away while other props screech out horrible low res loops of the equivalent of an industrial blender being filled with metal. It looks like they are using the literal toys as props, they don’t even bother to paint the props on both sides. Also while I’m here, how is Rider post Gaim? I hear Ghost is garbage but it seems like people quite liked Drive and Ex-Aid. I could never properly get into either of them. Should I push through and try and finish them? |
Maybe the last bosses of this show would be aliens from Mars?
Maybe Soichi is preparing all 3 states for war with aliens?! Now we have Smash who retain their minds...maybe in the end humanity will use riders and Smash against aliens! also just 7 eps in...and Cross-Z gets his upgrade. I really hope he gets another since there is room for 1 more unless its just gonna be Build getting his Hazard Trigger and that 'All-Bottles' final form... and unless someone else is becoming Rogue, Gentoku is properly not gonna be PM long, or he will lead an army of MP riders as Kamen Prime Minister Rider Rogue. Or his personality is reverted and he becomes a heroic rider. |

Everything you've listed there can be found in multiple other Rider series, though. While it may be true that it hasn't appeared in the last few series Drive/Ghost/Ex-Aid (I haven't watched any of these), all of the stuff featured in Build appears verbatim in various series before it. Also that Rain scene was one of my favourite in the whole show exactly because it finally shut the Driver up. |

Ryuga's inability to let go of his girlfriend's death is why the Cross-Z Dragon didn't work, and everything's been for her, his paid off matches were all for HER sake, when he thinks Stalk is Katsuragi, he lashes out at Stalk in anger, he can't think well due to it being a sensitive topic to him before getting the note from Sento Literally which other recent toku shows have people getting shot by realistic weapons, governments making their regions bleak and miserable for warfare and some form on social commentary about politics? That's honestly shallow of you if that's all you can appreciate about the scene, the only noise being rain, the shots of our hero and a traitor just staring, etc., the way it's shot works well in any other super hero thing |

Recent shows? No idea. I've been out of the loop with toku for a few years now. That is why I asked about the other shows, I saw bits of Drive/Ex-Aid and Ghost but never got into them or fully finished them. Interesting that you call me shallow for not liking the scene, because it is certainly a fault with me and not with the show itself.... |

I keep forgetting it's 2017, name as many toku shows as you can with people being gunned down with realistic guns by other human beings. Only examples I can think of are Ryuki and arguably Timeranger off the top of my head That's not what I said, I said it's shallow to only like how the belts were being drowned out and not the rest of what made the scene great such as the camera shots, the symbolic nature of Sento fighting Stalk where Soichi found him post amnesia, the rain shots, the moments in which they just stare at eachother before fighting, it brings out emotion and although Stalk's shown he's an irredeemable bastard, you can read Sento's thoughts of "I wish this wasn't happening, why did it come to this?" and Stalk seemingly feeling slight remorse about the situation, as he DID feel guilty about tricking the cast a few times despite it being part of his plan. The scene has depth, Showa VS Heisei's stupid reason for the Riders fighting is another example of showing off a bit of depth, as OOO looks away due to guilt as the Showa Rider's were calling him out on trying to not have to move forward. OOO didn't even have a major role in the movie, so that level of depth can be appreciated even if there wasn't anything good in the movie other than that |

But yeah I didn't care about anything else in that Rain scene, I have zero emotional investment in this series due to the clunky, hamfisted pacing and storytelling. You seem really invested though and I'm happy for you. |

But you said you liked the cast's interactions. Which is a big part of what helps make that scene great. Eh, |
This Touto-Hokuto war seems interesting. It’s cool that Hokuto has their own rider. I hope there’s a rider from Seito later on in the series. A triple rider war would be interesting.
|
I mean, I too have been disappointed in the lack of major twists in this show, and I’ll need some later on if this is going to be among my favorites, but we are only 16 episodes in. Most toku wouldn’t even have anything other than a vague direction to its plot at this point, while Build has made a lot of progress on that front. I’m hoping going into the new plot for the new year, we will really see this show come into its own.
Anyways good episode, I’m really excited for the next story arc with the three countries at war. From the looks of the preview, the source of conflict between Sento and Ryuuga is going to be that Sento is staunchly against using Riders in warfare, while Ryuuga wants to fight to protect his homeland. Pretty interesting! |

Dang, Build really just keeps knocking it out of the park for me. As the now obligatory "season finale" episode before the new year, this was great. The big mystery driving the show up to this point is largely resolved with a bunch of great character bits, making way for exciting new plotlines, and we get a big action scene set to the entire theme song to cap things off. Good stuff.
Oh, and I'm dead certain Over-Time mistranslated Ryuuga's line at about 15 minutes in, so just a heads up for everyone. They have him saying "I'm pissed because he's so pissed at himself", but what he actually said is "I'm pissed at myself for being so pissed at him". What they have gels with the climax just fine so this isn't a huge deal, but it's not what that conversation with Misora was actually about, and I think the actual line shows how much progress Ryuuga is making as a character to have that kind of self-awareness. Regarding Gaim, the gadgets (while annoying in their incessant talking) were at least supposed to be that way because they were sold to the masses as a glorified toy.
But Build is shaping up to be the best show since Gaim. Drive and Ghost were immense wastes of potential despite having good content. I haven't yet seen Ex-Aid but that is a nightmare just on costumes and gadgets alone. |

I liked Season 2 a lot. Just as much as 1. The continuation/evolution of Jin's descent was interesting to me.

I'm starting to wonder if many toku fans read or watch much outside the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I feel that I can appreciate things in these shows that others either miss or don't like for whatever reason because I can see the real-life parallels in history, science, or other general fiction. There's much more to a show like Gaim, or any toku, beyond just a story and characters you can watch for pure entertainment and nothing more.

if you don't like Ex-Aid and Build, i don't know what to tell you. Maybe it's just time to move onto something other than Kamen Rider? Because these two series have been a load of fun
|
I just feel that the war is too fast.
I know they need to get out Grease as fast as possible now we already have Cross-Z, but I do hope the next episodes really explain how Stalk managed to make Sclush driver and sentient Smashes. I also got the feeling that the future episodes will be a mess, story wise. Too much moving parts. But we have Otoya's actor back. YAY! I simply love that guy. He is the best part of Kiva. |

Drive was like falling in love with Kamen Rider all over again for me. I loved it from episode 1 and it only got better as it went along. The back-to-basics "hero fights monsters" style was just what I needed, and it didn't get stale thanks to the strong characterization and chemistry of the central cast and the more complex plotting in the back half. Obviously I can't claim to know your tastes, but I'd absolutely recommend diving deeper into it. |
