This show, man.
It's gonna be one of those ones where I run out of different ways to say "I liked it" each week by the halfway mark, I just know it!
This episode felt even more stellar than usual, whatever that means when I just said words to that exact effect last week. What's more unique to this one is how I feel its structure is particularly commendable, with the focus
beautifully
split between all the principle characters. Just when you think the plot is only going to be about one main thing, it switches the story up, and as is Zenkaiger's way, it makes all that rapid-fire insanity feel natural.
The biggest thing is still Stacey, of course. Or at least it
feels
that way when I love Stacey so much. All the material with him in this one is fantastic. A lot of what drew me into his character right away was how much you could tell, not only from his backstory, but simply from the actor's embittered performance, that he's very much someone who is a bad guy as a product of a bad environment more than anything, so this sort of wrinkle in the story is exactly what I want to see from him. Stacey chasing after the life he wishes he had. and all the drama that's sure to come from him realizing his resentful personality is completely at odds with ever having that warmth in the long-term. And like, the one showing him that affection is literally
his arch-enemy's grandmother.
Could that be any more perfect?
Well, yeah, when the grandmother we're talking about is Yatsude, it can. Like I said last time, she can make small roles in an episode count for a lot, and that closing scene where she assumes Kaito and "Satoshi" are two people fighting when they should be getting along as friends is a real highlight. Because it's like, she's not exactly wrong! It's this sort of dramatic irony that's way up my alley, where Yatsude's inaccurate reading of the situation points towards a potential larger truth. Maybe Stacey's not such a bad kid deep down, if you give him a chance, and you can see that Kaito is leaning more in that direction in the end.
As cool as all this stuff with Stacey and Kaito is, by the time Zenkaiser and Twokaiser head out to stop the monster, I was a little worried for a bit the episode might be keeping the Kikainoids a little too out of focus. (Although Secchan being glued to Zenkaiser might've made up for it a tiny bit.) But sure enough, the show goes a step beyond, and explicitly allows Zyuran and Gaon their big underdog comeback, being the ones to put a stop to the monster's abilities by using his own powers against him. And then it gives all four of them a literal BIG comeback when Zox's robot is tossed straight out of the fight and Kaito can't even combine them to pilot a robot himself. It's a well-deserved turnaround for a group of characters who went through WAY too much comedic suffering to not get a cool hero moment or two by the end. I was deeply glad to see they weren't forgotten.
Plus! While I've been trying to avoid jumping the gun on mentioning this, this episode is a big contributor to a mounting pile of evidence that Zenkaiger's villains are low-key pretty freakin' good? It's strange to think about, because in terms of characterization and style, they're not different from Koumura's usual fare, but they have a way of managing not to fade into the background so far that's maybe worth noting. You regularly get a good sense of the individual scheming they've each got going on, and the idea that even the
pet bird
can feel significant is a testament to that.
