DS' Final Thoughts on Legend Heroes: Three Kingdoms
Oh man, I wasn't exactly sure what I expected when I first sat down to watch
Legend Heroes
, but lemme tell ya, I don't think anything could've prepared me for it. And I mean that in the best way possible! This show was fantastic!
Is it perfect? No, but there's alot to love about this low budget toku from South Korea, to the point it's become one of my favorite toku ever.
But first, let's get the singular big negative out of the way...
The Weakest Aspect
This is weird to talk about, because
Legend Heroes
' biggest weakness is directly linked to and parallel to its biggest strength; And that's its character focus.
See, here's the thing, the characterization and interaction in this show is
so strong
that whenever the show does fumble on the focus some characters get, it really stands out. And I feel like the biggest victim of this is Sun Ce, and by extension, Sun Qian.
The Sun family is meant to represent the third "kingdom" in this adaptation of
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
, so it's such a shame that they are so out of focus compared to Liu Bei and Cao Cao. Granted, the original story is also guilty of this to an extent, and plenty of other adaptations are too, but there was still way more than enough material that I really felt they could've used.
Heck, at least the
SD Gundam
adaptation was nice enough to give Sun Qian a super mode like the other Emperors!
I guess what it boils down to is that I wanted more of these already interesting characters, and hey, that's not so bad of a complaint to have, is it?
There were also a few moments from the original story I would've loved to have seen them keep, but admittedly it'd be hard to recreate some of those so it's really not a big deal at all.
THE GOOD STUFF
I just noted the character writing, and oh man was it ever great! I absolutely loved this cast overall, and this show is incredibly full of great character moments. From the silly antics of Bulk and Skull to the heavy drama in Cao Cao's' story, this show has pretty much everything I could ever want out of its diverse cast.
The overarching lesson of the show was one that I also never would've expected coming from a kid's' show, but is one that I highly respect the writers on doing: The lesson that some dreams can't be achieved, and that not everyone can be truly happy, but despite that, you need to keep moving forward not just for the good of the world, but most importantly for your own self worth.
I feel like Gongsun Zan showed this best. She might've lost her dream of being a grand martial artist, but she found an all new dream in business and is every bit as happy as she was before; If not more so.
Outside of those, the action could be surprisingly good when it wanted to be, and alot of the suit designs are some of my favorites that I've ever seen in a Toku. If this show ever gets a high end action figure line, you better believe I'll be buying a ton of it.
MY FAVORITE THINGS
Favorite Character: Without any sort of doubt, LIU BEI!!! I never once felt that they messed his character up, and his actor made him an absolute delight to watch ontop of the excellent characterization that this show had to offer. And in the end it made me really happy that this toku decided to deviate from history in terms of the final outcome, as it only felt like the proper conclusion after all was said and done.
Favorite Episode: Episode 6. I'm a huge sucker for friendship tropes, especially when they're done well, so having an entire episode dedicated to the friendship of Liu Bei and Gongsun Zan and highlighting how the two complete each other was absolutely top notch. And with the added bonus of keeping their relationship entirely platonic too! It hit me right in the feels in all of the best ways and was the episode where I knew I was hooked.
Favorite Suit: Ma Chao. This is a first for me actually, as in most adaptations of
Three Kingdoms
I tend to love Zheng Fei the most. But what can I say? Not only is it a great design in its own right, but having it tied to my favorite two-parter in the show(Episodes 26 and 27), as well as making sure that Liu Bei focuses entirely on boxing whenever he uses the Ma Chao piece made it an absolute highlight every time it showed up.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Seriously, if anyone's been reading this thread without actually watching the show itself, you're doing yourself an incredible disservice. It's free on YouTube for pete's' sake! Go give it a shot! I really do feel like this is a show that has something to dang near everyone.
In the end, despite some minor fumbles here and there,
Legend Heroes: Three Kingdoms
is a fantastic ride full of great characters, an engaging story, and is overall just a ton of fun to watch. I was highly entertained and it's become one of my favorite Toku, right alongside the likes of
MMPR
and
Kuuga
. And if the same mind behind this show should ever make, say
Legend Heroes: Warring States
, you'd better believe I'd be there to see it.
I give
Legend Heroes
a very strong
5/6
.
