It's a pity that she's not the primary focus of the whole series.
Yuri is great! I really do appreciate that, in a franchise where women are treated with more fragility than even the skinniest of pretty boys,
Yuri and Megumi
are the first two people to tussle with Fangires. The two of them are ready to rectify God's errors!
With their fists!

I am not drawn in by the panicky dude in the mask, gloves, and coat crawling around for discarded fish bones and communicating via signs. Now, in fairness there is a reason for this. Wataru is meant to be a hikikomori - an extreme social recluse. This was an issue that was gaining a lot of attention in the 2000s. Basically, it's a population of young Japanese adults who are essentially hermits, having minimal contact with other people and rarely leaving their house. It's an interesting social phenomena but a really weird trait to have for your super-hero protagonist.
I
really
love it for a superhero protagonist, though. It's that Faiz thing, where nearly everything about Wataru should disqualify him from being a Kamen Rider. And yet, he
is
a Kamen Rider, so how does he start to mold himself into being worthy of it? That journey for a character is really interesting to me. How does this kid who sulks in the bath because he got spooked by a girl... how does
he
save the world? Very into a story that answers that question.

Some of this will be explained later. The rest of it... well, it's Kiva and Kiva doesn't always feel the need to explain things.
Yeah, it's doing a lot in the first episode (literally no one explains what Kivat even is?!), but there's so much energy to it that it never feels bloated or distracted. Much like its skinny protagonist, there's a
leanness
to this first episode, in spite of dual timelines and brief discussions of Japanese economic eras. There's some real joy at work in this one, a lightness that showcases its humanity. I dug it.
