The first half of Hibiki is now complete!
And... man, it really is great. I'm not sure what exactly I can say about it that hasn't been said already, but I'll try.
You can tell this show was a real passion project that meant alot to many of the people involved. The various influences from kabuki, music, and life in general, all make for an overall great atmosphere and an enjoyable watch.
Hibiki also stands out where, in an era full of darker and more mysterious Rider shows, it focuses primarily on having a positive attitude and an optimistic outlook on life, as well as how our communities and the general people we surround ourselves with help shape and bring out various aspects of us.
It actually sort of reminds me of both Kuuga and Wizard in that aspect; Where many other toku shows are focused on merchandise, or action, or dramatic plot beats, Hibiki is not only a bit more down to Earth, but mainly focuses on celebrating life, and the various harmonies therein. The musical number that opens the show says it all, really.
The show also does a fantastic job at world building; With the Oni shown to repeatedly be a widespread organization, characters talking very naturally as if they've been doing this for a long time, and of course, the various ways that music is interwoven into practically every aspect of this universe. From the melodies and harmonies that can be heard in everyday life, to the the fact that the Hawk Disc gets its sound effect from a guitar screech, music is everywhere.
The cast is also a standout, with every major character being rather well rounded and likable in their way, ontop of, again, being rather unique for a show like this. Hibiki, the title character, while he certainly is a powerful Oni, is also a huge dork who tries to act cooler than what his personality actually gives. Asumu is a lost child who doesn't wish to become a superhero, but rather uses them as a form of comfort and guidance, thus emphasizing the show's' message about the importance of idols. The list goes on.
And perhaps most importantly... it's just in a general a good and fun watch? The positives vibes and atmosphere of the show managed to always keep me engaged, ontop of made every episode enjoyable for one reason or another. From swift and stylish action sequences, to some rather real and tender moments, to a pretty solid sense of humor, Hibiki's' first half has pretty much every base covered. Again, it's easy to see how alot of love went into the making of this, which is makes it all the more of a shame that the show would end up getting ripped from the hands of those who worked so hard on it.
I've said before that I love to associate shows I've seen with songs that I've heard, and for Hibiki, I can think of no better song than
"find your way"
by San Holo.
The first half of Hibiki is my second favorite Phase 1 Heisei show, right behind Kuuga. Binge Buddy meanwhile, well, he's not as into it as I am, but even he could recognize its artistic integrity. And I personally think that's a great testament to just how much of an effort this show put forth.
