You look at Ep. 43 and it almost seems like they were trying to save themselves by appealing to parental critiques by crafting a plot which reads not only like an indictment on excessive TV watching, but tokusatsu in general cause the kid is watching older Sentai like Battle Fever J and Denziman! The following episode, Ep. 44, had a similar setup to a now-standard Sentai finale...despite the fact that there were still four episodes to go! There are some fairly unique visuals in the series and it has a way of making you like it even if everything you read about it says otherwise.
It has more to do with kids at the time, circa 1990, being tired of the same old. I love the setup of Fiveman, five siblings, teachers, etc. but when you check out the aspects of the show that are merchandisable, not a whole lot of innovation at hand compared to the previous year and just similar stuff. Even their robot lineup is pretty much the same stuff. And also Winspector, which was airing the same year, killed the competition with limited resources both on the TV side and merch side last I checked. And people's interests were towards other shows that year too probably.
