I really want to be supportive - especially when what subs they have are as good as they are - but recently it's really felt like the whole team kamen rider thing has had... no direction and instead a lot of very strange choices?
Like, looking at the subs first of all -- made an extremely strong start with 71 and Kuuga, both of which had fantastic subs (even if I disagree with translating the Grongi, but I get it), and then a very random choice with the Zi-O movie. Bit of a strange one to do and I think it puts more people off than draws people in honestly, but at least it would lead into deciding what one to do next? ... but we've heard NOTHING in the half a year since then, and only recently have we heard we're getting Gaim...!'s movie. On
Toei's
channel, in a livestream.
Looking at merch, it's extremely unfocused. I would have thought it would make sense to put the spotlight mostly on the series you've subbed (71 and Kuuga), along with a few you know are popular like Gaim and Den-O; and the recent ones like Saber and Zero-One. Following on from that you'd probably want some basic action figures, so perhaps do simultaneous releases of a few DX items, RKFs, perhaps some SHFs too for the people already hooked on Rider collecting -- impress us by giving us a couple Premium Bandai items without large middleman and import fees attached. Meanwhile the SO-DO, SHODO and FRS lines are also quickly gaining popularity, so it might make sense to get a few of those in too especially as they are very cheap and hence there's a large draw to newcomers (same with RKFs).
But I guess that just makes sense to me as an outsider who doesn't know how business works, because instead the right approach is apparently to get:-
- SICs which are very expensive and limited in appeal with very out-there takes on a few specific characters
- Expensive CSM and DX re-releases
- Ichiban?
- The... Acrylic Logo EX series
- A single premium bandai SODO set marked at 80$
- Extremely generic general merch consisting of JPGs pasted on plain black pillows and clothes marked up at a premium and exclusive to Amazon
- FRSes, which are actually good; especially as the Premium Bandai ones aren't more expensive
- Absolutely nothing in sight for Ichigou and Nigou
I just... man, I don't know; I don't want to be a downer, but. Someone tell me this is actually working. Someone tell me I'm just some stupid person who doesn't know how business works who's got tunnel vision on specific action figures and DX toys, and whose notions of recent series simultaneously sold on western markets alongside broadcasts of the recent shows like what Ultraman is doing is just stupid and shortsighted. Someone tell me that there's something I'm not understanding here at all because I cannot for the life of me make sense of this mess when Ultraman, the one that's supposedly on a budget; is trailblazing with subbed simulcasts, physical releases of official subs, official DUBS of some of its smaller projects, original t-shirt designs made available in the west and a goddamn marvel comic. Someone tell me that Kamen Rider, the toku franchise that is apparently doing the best and has the most money; is making more sensible business decisions with all this and I just don't get it at all.
