I feel like there's a really great, important lesson this episode teaches viewers:
never let the Donbrothers do a doctor's job.
Seriously, literally all four of them utterly fail Tsubasa in his hour of need. Tsuyoshi lacks the gumption to truly think for himself, so he pawns the responsibility off to Tarou. Tarou wants to put his career first, so
he
pawns off the responsibility to Haruka and Shinichi. Haruka is ready to murder Tsubasa within minutes of showing up to help. And then even Shinichi eventually abandons rational solutions to fall back on superstition instead. Absolutely none of these people end up doing anything that remotely helps Tsubasa, and the plotline is ultimately resolved in a manner that makes it a non-issue whether they ever tried or not. If anything, it becomes less of a story about the rest of the team helping Tsubasa to hang in there until he can get better, and more about the miracle of them not killing the poor guy long enough for someone else to fix him up.
I thought it was a pretty great episode of Donbrothers!
It really is just an episode where the heroes are completely awful at what they do for 20+ minutes, but in a show about flawed weirdoes, you can get away with that every now and then. There's a great chaotic rhythm to how this one plays out, especially once everyone starts jumping back and forth between helping Don Momotaro and "helping" Tsubasa. It's a structure that's taking advantage of the unique rules Donbrothers has set up for itself, getting a ton of mileage out of the idea that everyone on the team teleports to wherever the battle is. (There's also something weirdly dorky about the whole "Change Off" thing that's introduced here, which I thought only made everything funnier. Like, having a specific callout for that would seem unnecessary for even the most traditional of toku heroes, which only makes it seem even sillier to see characters in Donbrothers doing it.)
What ends up keeping everything glued together in the end is that, while it's doing all this nonsense with medical emergencies and wannabe ninja, this is also an episode that offers a lot more clarity than usual when it comes to the overall story of the series. Even on just a minor level, we have it explicitly confirmed that Haruka didn't bother to register Tsuyoshi's face back in episode 1, which I believe was only left to implication until now. (And to be fair to Haruka, what some salaryman superhero looked like was probably pretty low on the list of new information she was taking on back then. It was a very busy day for her!) But more pressingly than that matter, we're given a surprisingly clear explanation of what Jin's role in all this is, and an inkling of how the Nouto might relate to that, all done in a way that -- naturally -- is also sure to leave the viewer with at least one new question for every one it answers. We know
what
Jin's role is, but how and why did he end up there? Still shrouded in mystery! Pay attention to folded paper instead! ...Oh wait, it's not really that apparent why we need to do that either, is it?
Didn't I start this train of thought off by mentioning how much clearer this episode was about things that usual? Ah well, I guess that's just Donbrothers for you. The heroes might all be crazy, and the series arc might just be an endless trail of breadcrumbs, but somehow, it's still supremely entertaining and well put together anyway. The use of the ending theme this week was pretty dang effective, by the way.
