Good news: Kirama Silver is here!
Bad news: he got slapped out of resentment by his sister and mentor. Unhappy reunion. Last edited by henshinzero; 06-27-2020 at 08:21 PM.. |

That was CRAZY. I mean I was certain Takamichi was gonna be related somehow to Crystalia given his surname, but Mabushiina's big brother/heir to the throne?! That was totally out of left field but hey, heckuva entrance and reveal for sure. And I guess we can expect a 50% chance Sayo and Takamichi will be the next Urara and Hikaru sensei.

Boy, oh boy! It's Eiji Takaoka/BoukenSilver Version 2.0, I mean, it's Takamichi Crystalia's first appearance! I think this was filmed before it was stopped due to Rio Komiya's COVID-19 positive case? Like Eiji, who found the Precious 14 years ago, Kouhei Shouji's character has to find treasures on Earth while battling the Yodon. And his transformation sequence is way different from the five core members of Kiramager. Hope and pray he'll be a better 6th Sentai Warrior/Ranger than Canalo/RyusoulGold of last year. Kiramazing!!! So, is there a real life silver colored crystal or mineral here on this Earth? Next week: Another Super Sentai Drill Mecha goes by the name of...Drijan!

Wow what an introduction!
This is the start of story bit I'm actually very interested in. Where was he when the Yodon attacked? I hope its a real part of his character and not something glossed over in just a single next episode. |

I honestly hope they just never explain or acknowledge why Takamichi is the only one in his family who looks like a human instead of a rock-headed alien.

Today’s movie reference: The Man with the Funky Hat.
And for those who think there’s a Sentai reference in every episode: I assume Sayo breaking her ankle is a deliberate callback to SayA from Gingaman breaking her ankle in all but one of her focus episodes |

Or perhaps Silver is just BoukenSilver v.2?

You know, I really didn’t like this episode at first. The new guy screams "Oh look at me I’m so cool, buy my toys!" so much it hurts.
But the end scene changed everything, because instead of the show actually believing the hype Mabusheena just slaps his face and makes us aware how horrible he actually is. Now, I know this show will try to make us see things form his perspective and eventually it will all fall into place and we can accept him, but I just really like how we aren’t immediately supposed to gush about the new shiny Ranger, he’s allowed to bring some deep, heartfelt conflict into the mix and that’s great. |

Aw, look, Toei thinks a silver-colored guy who goes on adventures and searches for treasure qualifies as a "new" character. Isn't that just Precious?
In all seriousness, this episode was just as fun as usual, but definitely not the best material the show has to offer. I know you could argue this about the whole of Kiramager, but this one in particular largely felt like Arakawa just doing a very good version of something we've seen a million times already. Takamichi's introduction doesn't do anything to really put a spin on the usual format for the big new hero's entrance. He shows up, he's weird but charismatic. His strangeness make him seem unreliable at first, but it turns out he's highly skilled and has an answer to everything. He turns out to have his own transformation device and proceeds to wow the existing cast, who stand around in shock another one of them exists, because unlike us, they haven't seen a Super Sentai show before. Which is the main hurdle I kind of had to get over to realize how good this episode still is. Kiramager's target audience is one that maybe remembers Canalo and Noel at most. It's entirely likely Kiramger is the first Sentai for a lot of kids, and when I remember that, suddenly the unapologetic use of all these tried-and-true tropes seems like a feature, and not a bug. The key here, that I mentioned earlier, is that this is a very good version of something that's been done before. This is a rock solid introduction for Takamichi. The plot of the episode does a more than adequate job of generating intrigue with his character, showing us a couple facets to his personality that make it hard to get a grasp on exactly how much of a hero he is right away. This even continues to the very end of the episode, after the big fight scene that proves how amazing and strong he is, with it immediately being called right back into question whether or not it's a good idea to believe the hype. Again, there's nothing in here that hasn't been done at least one other time, but these are inherently exciting plot elements that do exactly what a sixth Ranger's arrival is meant to: shake up the status quo and add some new dynamics to the series. Given that this is such a straightforward intro episode, it remains to be seen exactly where his chemistry with the main group will land, but, as much I keep bringing up the unoriginality here like it's a bad thing, the truth is, I'm excited to see where this all goes, even if it keeps feeling familiar. I'm a sucker for a sixth Ranger, and this one is silver. I couldn't hate Takamichi if I tried. Especially when that fight scene was that cool. It gave him a pretty unique fighting style with the Shiny Breaker, and I loved getting some big construction vehicles in on the act, which is something I'm surprised we don't see in quarry fights more often, now that I think about it. So yeah, there are parts of this post that seem pessimistic, but that's just the part of me that's trying to be "objective" and "critical". I feel a certain obligation to at least attempt to hold the show up to some standards, but there's really no getting around that this episode blasted away the doubts I had about it pretty thoroughly when all is said and done. Kiramager is a hard show to not like!
