Gekiranger episode 1. Very first thought: **** you TV-Nihon! Learn how to ****ing translate! I tried letting you have the benfit of the doubt, but regretted it within 5 mins. Hikari Senshi's subs aren't much better as they over translate (and calling Rio "Leo" is just wrong), but at least it's translated. I can hear Japanese, but I will never understand a sentence that's left half untranslated.
Translation (or lack there of) aside, I enjoyed it. It was a solid first episode. There's not much to say about it. Just wish I had better options on the subs. But the lack of translation for things like the Ringi transformation and the energy moves is kind of noticeable.

I made it through 11 episodes of JakQ before I stopped, 1 episode of Sun Vulcan, 1 episode of Goggle 5, and 4 episodes of Dynaman (and I own all of Dynaman). It isn't because of all them are terrible really, but because they take forever to end. I feel like it takes 45 minutes to complete an episode (and I highly enjoy the original Kamen Rider series). Sorry, but I just can't stand it when a show doesn't have a god damn resolution. I don't care how good a show is until the end, because an ending can make or break a show for me. And the sad thing is, I don't ask much at all in an ending. All I ask for is that something changes so that the last 40-something episodes meant something in the long run, and weren't a relative waste of time.
As for the ending to DaiRanger, it might all be about timing of when I saw it. I did not hate open endings as much then as I do not because I had not seen 15 anime series that did it and many Toku series either at that time. I think I had only seen one that pulled a cop out ending, if that. It was not until after DaiRanger that I saw the endings to Big O, Evangelion, RahXephon, Gilgamesh, DekaRanger, and Wolf's Rain that I started to detest those type endings. And it isn't like DaiRanger's ending did not fit. You are talking about a war that has gone on for centuries. It wouldn't just stop there because Shadam was defeated. Episode 38 of Zyuranger; the epic dress-up battle between Lami and Mei. Man, this show is weird. I especially liked how they still tried to have a kid of the week arc with some character that was only in three short scenes. The second time she showed up (about 10-12 minutes after first appearing) you could practically hear her shouting "Wait, this episode was supposed to be about me!"

Speaking of ZyuRanger, I just watched the first 10 episodes from GUIS. I forget how much I love this show until I always rewatch it. I also forget how bad the child acting is until I watch rewatch it. Yes, it's a double standard, but I'll still take Zyu over 90% of what has come out since GaoRanger.
As for watching it subbed, most of it has been pretty much the same as I got by watching it raw. It was nice to actually know what DoraSphinx's riddles are though, as I never understood what he was asking (although, a few of them still do not make sense, such as the Tug of War one) and some of them are actually very intelligent questions. I might have to ask some of them to my students if the occasion ever rises. However, I never caught that the monkey people were part of Daizyujin's garden. I understood they were cursed, but that portion was new to me and now it makes sense. |

Gekiranger 2 and 3. I don't dislike Jan, but he gets annoying fast. He acts like a 2 year old most of the time. I;ll give them credit for giving him the back story to explain these actions, but that doesn't make it any less annoying.
The weakest part of the show is the the same problem Jungle Fury had: that ****ing fly that won't shut the hell up during the awesome mecha battle. He's like the anti-Doggie. Instead of being one of the most awesome characters in both properties, he's one of the worst characters in both. Speaking of mecha battles, I'm aware I'm in the minority here, but I love Geki/JF's Megazord designs and battles. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Megazord designs are overly simple, I don't care because the guy in the suit can MOVE. I am so sick of Megazords that move like bricks on rollerskates. GekiTouja needs more love. Nothing else to really comment on yet. I'm sutre I'll have more to say once I complete the vemom dudes' arc. I remember enjoying that in JF, so I'm sure it will be good here too. |

I grew to love Bae. Primarily because during the middle of the series the mech battles were tacked on to an episode that didn't really facilitate them.
As for GekiTouja, I have a new found love for him, too, for the same reasons. Just watching a mech do more than lumber forward and swing it's titan sword/fire it's plasma cannon is a breath of fresh air. It's like the Lightning Mode from Ninja Storm, but permanent. It's great (And the design has grown on me too. While I won't be buying the DX toy for it's painfully simple combination, I am looking for the Retrofire and intend on getting the SRC because it's design is lovely. Oh, and I think you'll enjoy the Deadly Venoms arc, I did. Granted, I loved the concept of the 5 Deadly Venoms before I even saw Geki

Yeah. In all honesty, I have a hard time sitting through the Sentai series before Bioman, and even Bioman is not that great.
Ryuki's ending is worse since it just wipes out everything that happened over the course of the series as if it never happened. They didn't beat the bad guy, Shiro just gave up because Yui killed herself so he made it where they never lived through the fire. Ren did not beat Odin at all and Shiro never actually fought anyone to be beaten.

I fully admit it's design isn't perfect, but I did grow to love it for what it is. However, I will argue about it's design being transferred to a toy. I think it looks lovely as a toy, and there was more than one occasion where I was tempted to buy the Jungle Pride figure. For me, the terribly simple combination is where I drew the line, but with the advent of the SRC and Retrofire figures, I have an alternative to better match the show.

See, I really like the gekiranger mech. To me it's simple yet effective. What I don't like is the price the set fetches on eBay (or more what people think its worth) and how many spare animals I'll lying around thanks to the way BOA distributed it. Still, I'd love to own GekiRinTojah... So my search will continue.
