A busy first episode. Pacing, dialogue and story aren't really doing it for me at the moment. I get it's episode 1 and they need to fit in a lot of stuff into a (shorter than usual) runtime so I don't fault them, just feels kind of like stuff happens simply cause it needs to. Doesn't feel natural.
On the other hand, music and visuals are really nice and fresh, the CG stuff is mediocre as always but the way they are utilizing it is interesting. I also love the suit design and the sword choreography is really awesome. From having a narrator Kakuranger-style to including an ending sequence for the first time since Hibiki (and our first ever Sentai-style ending dance - though the choreography is definitely more complex), I can't say the series doesn't feel unique. They are trying something new. There's a lot of familiar aspects of course but the overall tone feels different. So I look forward to future episodes of Saber and I hope it doesn't have the same issues its predecessor Ghost did. Last edited by Xtreme RX; 09-06-2020 at 12:30 AM.. |

Oh right two things I'll note since I don't have much else to say without proper subtitles.
So it seems like the full CG Segments are made using Unreal Engine? Which is kinda cool. Not sure if that extends to their normal CG too but still. Also, this is like what... the first time we've had an Eyecatch in Rider since... Black RX? (Not counting Brain's special) |

Hm... Remember when Kamen Rider was more cool than cringe? Just finished watching the first episode of Saber and... if I had to summarize my opinions, it would be that Saber felt more sentai-like than I would have preferred? I mean, in this one episode, we have goofy support characters, we have CGI henshins, we have a group of villains hidden in the shadows watching over the monster attacking, we have a literal growing/giant monster... an ENDING THEME? It felt very, very Magiranger to me, especially with the purple knight badguy.Other than that, there are some things I liked, and some red flags.
Pros: - The suit designs are awesome. - The belt and gimmick toys are actually rather cool. - Admittedly, the CGI wasn't cringy and the action was quite good. - The backstory/lore with the swordsmen is really fascinating. Cons: - Too many children. Sorry, but I'm just not a fan of child actors, even in kid's shows. The fact that our main character is a bookshop owner that caters to children is worrying. - The monsters are yet again generic and don't relate to anything. I don't understand how they were able to nail the monsters so well in some series, but just fail to do so in other shows. Other observations: - We don't even have specific victims this time around? I'm not sure whether this is a con or not (as the victim thing has been done to death), but how on Earth are they going to make us care for what's happening each week and keep us emotionally invested? I'd love for a serialized story once again like Gaim, but with this premise and set-up? I highly doubt it's going to happen. - The Ridebooks look to feature more heavily in the plot and mythos than the Progrise Keys, which is great. However, it remains to be seen if they will play any significant role in the plot or be weaved into it in any meaningful way. Like, are they just going to be given and handed new Ridebooks instead of having to at least earn them somehow? Urgh, I hope not. The jester like clown narrator, bgm, and somewhat reminds me of trying to be harry potter /shonen anime like fairy tales. The rainbow color doesn't match the darker snippet origins of the original saber/toma early childhood loss. It doesn't reflect well. And people used to complain about shit cars ruining epic proto drive intro. I feel riders will never go bask to the extreme serious dramas and deaths anymore . Build and gaim to an extent exaid and 01 tried, but reset it later . It's so weird seeing the qr codes on the props as well. It's like sentai mecha suit/cgi tried to be accurate to the toys by showing the cluster leg parts during big combinations back in ninninger. The secondary rider looks kind of like Mitchy from gaim though. The lead actress might be another akiko. I feel like thus year it'll be another ryuken where driver/weapon plays all the gimmick sounds, but the dinky sword take the fantasy fun out of it. The stock animation will get tiring if the used the same henshin sequence like sentai and the books are like 90s game cartiages. I agree he was too pro in tranformatiin sequences. It's like this wasnt his debut fight. The actor was performing like a pro kind of cocky in a way displaying how much he train for this moment. It'll make sense if he was a student training to fight like kabuto. It's a been a while since I've seen ryuki, but I feel the cgi for world changing haven't improved that much. Even with pandemic I'm sure thru could of polished it a bit more at home. Usually, they tend hide bad cgi with dark lighting . Still practical effect is the way to go for riders with minor cgi . The sentai like martial art dancing sequence will def take the drama out of serious eps. Kind of waste for the epic old school music. The end shot feel like espada is the heroine, but it isn't. She's likely the older sister/ comedy relief. The blue lion though. We're back to fantasy animals like ryusoul Dino's, Last edited by VoidinToku; 09-06-2020 at 01:41 AM.. |

Need to rewatch it with subs to understand everything but the show is totally Wizard. I have the exact same feeling watching this and Wizard in terms of atmosphere, dynamic and setting.
I have a "meh" feeling about the "sister/friend who disappeared when we were kids" plot (only because that's a common trope, I have nothing against it itself). Caliber using a voice changer reminds me of Rogue as well like someone said. I guess he is someone we will meet quite quickly and we could intentify him by his voice if they didn't modify it, just like Gentoku. Everything else is ok for me. the CGI is not so good but the sequence reminds me of GARO enough to find it okay. The goofyness is here, but usually the 1st ep is always more goofy than the entire show itself (rewatched ex-aid recently and the 1st ep is wtf in that aspect. I didn't remember it was that much). But you have to catch kids attention so that's normal. |

I liked this episode quite a bit. While I am a little skeptical still about the ED, I'm hoping that for more serious episodes, they'll forego showing it like they've cut the OP in previous seasons.
While the pacing it a bit much, I feel like it's more comparable to other Rider series openers as opposed to Ghost's. Ghost's first episode's pacing was horrible, it moved so fast that by the end I wasn't even sure what happened. So this one reminds me more of other Rider series' premieres. There's a lot to fit into the first episode, so the pacing is a little off, but the same could be said for a lot of Riders. For some of the criticisms, the kid actors are nothing new. Not a huge part of the show, but it's almost like a semi-running thing to have kids in premieres. Most notably with Ex-Aid. Speaking of... the CG henshins I doubt will be long lasting. Ex-Aid had these too, but they were eventually mostly abandoned as the series progressed and if they were used, it was often cut down to be as fast as a normal non-stock henshin. I see some people complaining about Touma being too good a swordsman already. I can kinda see why that's annoying, but also that is literally every Rider ever. Period. How many Riders were non-fighters or didn't have some sort of fighting in their background, yet somehow put up super convincing fights in their opening episodes? Emu, for example, literally somehow understands how to fight and use power ups in reality out of nowhere and use them to overpower Salty. Yes he's a gamer and a doctor, but he barely takes a hit in his first battle. Most times, the stumbling initial fight, is usually the only time they stumble in one. After that, they're suddenly a lot more adept at fighting monsters. I found this to be a perfectly acceptable opening episode, especially in light of Ghost being not so good. As for the head writer, I think we need to note that he wrote LESS than half of Ghost, and the episodes he wrote tend to be the better ones. He also wrote the Specter movie, which I thought was pretty damn good. And while I don't think Ghost is a good series, and it's probably one of my least favorites, I'm willing to give this guy's writing another chance. If you're on the fence about watching the show, I'd recommend giving it a try. Not every writer's work will turn out good, the same thing can be applied to game developers or movie directors. tl;dr Pretty decent opener. I have a few concerns, but I'm willing to let the show develop and air more than one episode before deciding whether or not to watch it. |

for those interested genmcorp has the subs (they were still not sure to do it, I guess they will. phew).
after watching with subs : Nothing too important was missed. It's a very solid episode. The only few gripes people can have are the ones from recent shows IMO. the goofyness (especially Mei in this ep), the "I know how to fight out of nowhere" and the CGI. But those are common now, everything else is cool so far. If I really had to find something kinda bad to say, is that I feel the debut fight is less impressive and impactful than Zero-One. I remember Zero-one had that crazy finisher going through the mantis magia and some camera shots (like the one on Zero-one foot just before the finisher) were kinda new and refreshing. Maybe if you held hands properly instead of doing a pinky swear she wouldn't fly off to the unknown. This is your fault, really. First episodes tend to be rough, but I will say this felt like watching a Sentai under a Kamen Rider title. Main Rider is red, there are children, ancient civilization from another world, the villains looked like they came out of Sentai, and even the monster of the week grew giant. Are we sure this is not the rejected pilot for RyuSoulger? |

So we have the Red Saber and next episode we have the Blue Saber.
Then from the ED we have a Yellow Saber. This is Seiken Sentai, Kamen Rider Sabers! /jk Love the energy, definitely youthful, although Blue Saber's crows feet when he grinned/smiled really added a lot of years to the otherwise youthful cast. |
