The more I expose myself to Ultraman and Kamen Rider as opposed to years of Sentai, the more I am finding myself asking a question: do some tokusatsu use a classic monster or villain a little too much?
It's probably not a new question, so don't credit me for originality. When Kamen Rider reuses a classic, the kaijin will probably return in a movie and probably be defeated in a group or by a group. If Sentai bothers to reuse a classic, the villain will probably return in a movie and likely get a more modernized form and be defeated by a new movie-exclusive team attack or Mecha combination! When Ultraman reuses a classic, it'll be two minutes after they have already used at least two separate classics within the same series! Where do you stand with older monsters? Are some over-used? Should a franchise take a break with the classics? Should classics get new forms or not? Are there some classic monsters you would like to see more of? |

i dont think they use classic villains enough, but overuse the select few they do bring back, like shadow moon. it is always a joy to see the great leader return, though

It's primarily because they had the costumes around and wanted to put it to use so that it won't be a waste.
You could say part of the reason the Super Hero Taisen movies exist because they need an excuse to use the suits that they reproduced for All Rider VS Dai-Shocker (I believe the suits are reproduced because it has been shown that Toku suits won't last much. Except Sentai suits) For Ultraman, the same applies but it started way back in 2005 with Ultraman Max. Max was basically Showa Ultraman in modern day so they recreated old kaiju suits, and when Mebius came they reused it as it is fitting for the anniversary. And later on, Tsuburaya is still recovering financially, which is why the New Generation series tend to feature a lot of classic monsters. Nevertheless, I believe it was from X onwards where they are comfortable with creating new kaijus, but still used the old ones just to have them be of use instead of gathering dust.

I don't think so. Both Rider and Sentai really only bring back classic monsters in movies or specials as adversaries for their respective heroes which are also returning and that's fine. It's not like Zero-One is randomly fighting a Greeed in his show or something.
And Ultraman is a different beast altogether because Tsuburaya puts more of an emphasis on legacy within their shows. They're either direct sequels or different versions of the same universe all linked to the same Land of Light with the same Ultras residing there. So for that setup it makes sense that not only Earth and humans exist in different realities but the same monsters and aliens too. It’s kinda like Star Trek were every different iteration still has Klingons and Vulcans and stuff. |

I feel they don't use them enough.
When a villain returns, typically in a crossover movie, unless they're the big focus, typically they're just a mook in a crowd of summoned villains. It's always rather disappointing to see classic villains like that. Villains with interesting personalities reduced to a bigger villain's henchmen. In situations like this, they also have no showcase of who they really were beyond just a punching bag for the heroes. An enemy who, in their own show, needed the help of an entire group of riders to beat in a 3 v 1 scenario, now beaten by 3 punches.

This also isn't really an issue anymore. The SHTs have been over for a while now, and any big crossover movie will keep its returning characters focused; with any big villains in particular having some kind of focus or attention given to them and the position of mooks taken up by actual mooks. The last few Rider crossover movies have been great about this in general, last two episodes of Zi-O aside; and I genuinely think we've gotten to a better time.

I find it kinda cool at least in regards to Ultraman, there are just some real classics like with Gomora, Zetton, Red King, etc. But also it's really cool to see them more recently bring back older Kaiju/Giants from the Showa era that haven't been reused/seen in like almost five decades for some Kaiju.
Examples being stuff like Takkong, Sevengar, and Star Bem Gyeron. |

With my very limited Ultraman experience, a lot of that is seemingly explained by them being multiple alien species; many of which are more or less mindless beasts. All the Zettons, for instance, are just extraterrestial dinosaurs.

I’m in the opposite opinion. I think NEWER monsters are overused in crossovers, (did Heisei Generations Final really need TWO gratuitous “all generals from a previous season” fight sequences?
