Episode 30 "Butterfly Return"
Hey, the 100th post wished I had something to commemorate this but I guess all of these rapid fire reviews should be something I guess. The episode surprises me with the fact that Liu Bei wasn’t in it at all. Has this ever happened in Toku before? Lina returns or should I say Yuan Shao having somehow still had her memories intact and new powers. One critique I have is I do wish her scars were more severe. I understand the show doesn’t have a high budget but it does kind of break suspension of disbelief a bit. I love the parallels between Sun Ce and Cao Cao in this episode especially since this is the 1st time these two really interacted. In both cases getting mixed up this new case, having both their angels leave at the start of the episode to gain new powers. Though we only get to see Sima Yi at the very end with the new Magic Finder.

Gross, Sun Ce.
That aside, I felt episode 29 was only okay. Like, yeah, it's clear that's meant to be a more light-hearted one to prep us for the eventual drama ahead, but it really does feel like a retread of the last time him and Liu Bei fought. Episode 30 also seems to cement that Sun Ce getting deceived is going to be a running trend. Still, it does set up a nice air of mystery, and the fight between him and Cao Cao was really cool.

Been slowly but surely catching up to the thread, so without further ado:

(This one was also a bit of a learning experience for me, as looking up the whole "Five Tiger Generals" thing afterwards made me realize I could've guessed which Hero Pieces Liu Bei would end up with WAY earlier if I weren't so ignorant. Tokusatsu is surprisingly educational sometimes! I feel like this show has to be extra fun for the people who know this material going in.) Quote:

That said, I have been pleasantly surprised with just how many twists on the story that Legend Heroes has taken so far! I'll wait until we're at the end to get into specifics on that front, though.

Boy I'm totally clueless about the Romance of The Three Kingdoms lol. But the show mythology feels very thought out and well executed. Makes me want to read the whole thing once this is over.

Episode 31 Butterfly Soar"
Yuan Shao is much like her character flaw, very simple. She is a two-faced liar with a fragile ego. Her desire is so petty we don’t even get to see her dream broken. So this episode cemented that Cao Cao and Sun Ce are meant to be parallels both being powerful Legend Heroes who are both rivals to Liu Bei even having similar angel devices mirroring each other. Cao Cao challenges Liu Bei’s ethics and justice and Sun Ce challenges Liu Bei as a martial artist, the two biggest aspects of his characters. This two-parter is mostly about the two clashing ahead as well as seeing all three of them standing together is quite a change of pace which is a nice call back to episode 20. I can’t wait for when they're truly united as a team. Let’s talk about Sun Ce for the moment the biggest thing that stood out to me this episode was how he refuses to even entertain the notion of Liu Bei just attacking Yuan Shao despite his simple hot-headedness this show development and how his clashed with Liu Bei has informed him about who he is. Also, Zhuge Liang, just being a gremlin is the best at tricking Liu Bei, and the Sentai-Esque growing giant helps mix up the giant battles. Episode 32 "Wish Granter"Episode 33 "Skunk's Love Erupts" I’m starting to notice a trend where the 1st part Liu Bei isn’t in it and even the 2nd part is mostly a background character. I think this for the show’s benefit of allowing the other characters to take the spotlight even for one episode shows the confidence the writers have for these characters and the viewer’s investments. I’m so glad to see Diaochan again. She does bring out Cao Cao’s kindness and makes him more multi-layered than one might think of him. As for the new Legend Hero, tying his sub-plot back into Mi Zhu who I haven't seen in a while is nice. The main love interest kind of got grating but her obsession with material wealth does feel better knowing the context of it being for her students and she’s most likely a one-off character so whatever. And Cao Cao getting L after L is amusing for his charter and is an entertaining highlight for me. Episode 34 "Crisis of Flying Dragon Fist" We finally see Hua Tua again after like 20+ episodes and this time I believe I figured out his identity. It's Zhang Jue considering their obsession with collecting Hero pieces. And as I was watching the reveal that Hua Tua can use Angel magic. The main meat and potatoes of the episode are Liu Bei’s traditional Flying Dragon Fist and Shangxiang’s new style clashing which even affects his Hero power output. For Liu Bei, this is something near and dear to his heart so he reacts negatively to it but with one inspiring beat down from Sun Ce later he realizes he’s been too dismissive. And in his rematch uses these techniques. And now we come to the real spectacle of the episode: the Pincer attack. Say guys, what do these scenes remind you of? I can think of three other toku shows with fun and allowing us to see more of these suits are always a plus.

Something fun to note about the two-parters focused on Sun Ce and Cao Cao is that the title card background changes from Dowan-Kwan to Sun Ce's' Dojo and Cao Cao's' base, respectively.
Sun Ce continues to be a character that I have really mixed feelings on. The Butterfly two-parter seemed focused on highlighting his more positive traits, to the point that he develops past his trend of being gullible. But then come the latest episode he's back to being a dope who gets "tricked" by Liu Bei. Him denouncing Liu Bei during that scene didn't really jive with me either, considering up until this point he was very gung ho about how Martial Arts shouldn't just be considered a business and be serious training. Like, I get wanting to defend your sister, but acting as if Liu Bei wasn't saying anything he agreed with at all? It felt out of character to me. Meanwhile with Cao Cao; Man, I never expected him to be the lead in a comedic two-parter about how you shouldn't be a simp, but boy did it turn out great! Now, initial reactions to the premise: Putting a serious character into comedic episodes filled with fart jokes might not sound good to people on paper, but it's because of the type of character that Cao Cao is that make the comedy of these episodes work great. Like, imagine if, say, Batman fell for the old "rake on the floor" gag. The effect? Absolutely hilarious. And like you said, it did help to highlight his softer side with everything else going on in the story. I have my own theory concerning Hua Tuo though. I think that Liu Bei's' master is actually an Angel, and his clone spell is why he was able to be in two places at once in the early episodes. But yeah, seeing all of the Five Tiger Generals being able to fight at once? Fantastic. Keep doing it.

Episode 35 "Royal Seal Descends & Episode 36 "Fantastic Dream Battle'
Fantastic, wonderful Legend Heroes is one of the best toku I've ever watched! Sorry just feeling a wave of emotion right now this show is just so good y’all. The character work is impeccable. Let’s talk about our new Legend Hero Ji Ling and the man behind the mask Yuan Shu, a con artist with the delusion of grandeur who rejects reality. The show’s final moment is something to pity as he’s now stuck in an empty world of his own making and he’s happy with it’s kind of unsettling because there are people in real life who would jump at this opportunity. Now I honestly thought despite all of the 3 main characters going down that this could be permanent simply because the show hasn’t pulled its punches before and had taken out several previous characters like He Jin and Gongsan Zan and it speaks to the quality of the show that it can convince somebody they would get rid of 95% of the main cast in a single episode. Legend King Eternity is one chunky big boy amirite. And love how Liu Bei was able to awaken both Cao Cao and Sun Ce by speaking of their ambitions he’s learned through their encounters. It’s a wonderful episode now Legend Hero has cemented it as the best toku show alongside my other contender Kamen Rider Kuuga.

The Ultrazord is so over the top that I can't help but love.
Anyway yeah, this was a great look into what would happen if our three leads lost the Dream Battle. Not just the state of the world, but the people they would degrade into as well. Though I guess this means the only combatants left are The Trio and then Bulk and Skull, huh?
