Gokaiger 34. Luka, the only member of the Gokaiger who is more fun whenever she's tasked with playing someone other than her actual character!
Being serious, as much as I like the flashbacks to Luka's past, I can't help but feel it's like I've jumped into a completely different show. I mean look how brutal the Zangyack are shown in the past, if they are happy to just drop their warships into the atmosphere and indiscriminately unleash hell...why have they been sending down one monster at a time on Earth? Yes, because then there'd be no show, but it's up to the show to convince us of these kinds of things or not raise these kinds of questions in the first place. And that isn't mentioning the episodes creepy obsession with Luka's appearance, it was simultaneously insulting to the entire audience as it was to the characters themselves. Especially considering, although I don't care much for actresses performance, Luka has been able to be a core part of the team, and not just a skirt tacked on to stop the audience complaining like Ahim basically has been. So just resulting Luka to "the pretty one" was kinda disgusting in my books.

Even that doesn't stick that well though, because the action commanders chosen by his generals - who are all played straight, well maybe not Insarn, but all the rest - are all comedy goofballs week after week. I think there have been maybe, what, three of the week villains so far that weren't played entirely for laughs?
I just think they're fucking shit man, they're so boring, they aren't funny OR fun and they've so far achieved NOTHING even though I'm getting very close to the final stretch. It feels less and less like hyperbole in saying they are the WORST villains in the entire franchise, possible some of the worst villains in the whole of tokusatsu. This show has so much going for it, but the Zangyack somehow manage to make even the best moments in this show feel utterly dull. I wish I got the villains in Luka's past.

As I get closer to the end of the series, I feel less and less into Gokaiger. It's a show with great parts, but not really a great whole. Like I actually like the gimmick a lot, for example, but I actually don't really like how they've executed the tribute aspect at all. It's things like that that plague pretty much everything I like about the show.
I think Gokaiger could have been a full blown masterpiece, everything is in place for it to be utter perfection, but without a stronger cast of villains and without any real sense of focus on cohesion it just sorta ends up a mess of great ideas, which are increasingly poorly executed for worse and worse results.

The Zangyack are actually amazing to me so I completely disagree with you. I think they're, without even the slightest bit of hyperbole, the best villains in the franchise I've seen. While there are many super serious (Jetman) and completely comedic (Kyoryuger) villains I think Warz Gill's crew is the perfect middle-ground.
I find Warz Gill hilarious, Barizorg very interesting, Insarn fun and Damaras is a bigger badass then pretty much any Sentai villain ever when his time comes. I love them all and actually was incredibly disappointed when Akudos Gill arrives and the Zangyack become serious. Warz Gill is exremely divisive though I love him so much it hurts, but others equally hate him so much it hurts. But yeah, there's a very big difference between the Zangyack forces in Luka and Joe's memories compared ot Warz Gill's fleet, which becomes a plot point in a few episodes. You saw a glimpse of them in the Shinkenger tribute and they don't fully arrive until the finale three-parter. All the Action Commanders chosen are still from the ships around the Gigant Horse. |

I think Warz Gill is a failed comedy act, Barizorg utterly wasted and deserving of a better show and Damaras has done nothing in almost forty episodes - he is the embodiment of boredom. Insarn is the only one I actually like, probably because she is the only one shown to actually do anything but she still fails at the most basic criteria for being a villain.

Different strokes, I guess. Warz Gill amused me right until the end.
Although I question how Insarn doesn't fit the "criteria of being a villain" she's an evil scientist working for an evil invading army. What criteria are you using? I mean, if being incompetent means you're not a villain then almost no children's show villains are really villains. Last edited by Starscream Gaga; 04-12-2014 at 09:31 AM.. |

She's not just an incompetent villain, she's an incompetent character. You know scratch what I just said, Damaras is the best of the Zangyack, since as he tries to do nothing he can't actually physically fail at anything as regularly as all the others do. Insarn deserves credit for being the only Zangyack to do anything but as a result she's like the only one of them to have ever lost or failed at something. You know failed at something other than being engaging.
