That was probably the best entrance for Tarou, Haruka, and Saruhara
Anyway, took me a second to wonder why the monster was Jetman themed, until it hit me that, duh. Love triangle. Now, I'm super curious as to where this Natsumi/Miho plot is gonna go. It also seems Inuzuka might become a monster at some point, since his obsessing about Natsumi hit the point where every woman he saw looked like her and he nearly passed out in the middle of the road.

This was really fun! A Tsubasa episode was definitely needed since he's really faded into the background compared to everyone else for a while now. This episode does a good job of showcasing what it is that I like about him, being a goofball whose so serious about love while being a '''''cool''''' fugitive on the run. Also I've genuinely grown to be charmed by just seeing Inubrother (and Kijinbrother) fight as CGI weirdos against suit enemies.
Also the episode was just funny. Kana turning out to be hopelessly in love with Tsukasa was a really great reveal, but then her freaking out at him turning into a dog is doubly so. No idea how that relationship between her and Tanabe got resolved but like, I'd be lying if I said I cared that much : P |

Wait so Tsuyoshi met "Miho", they got to know each other, and then got married, all within roughly a year?

Look out everyone! Inoue's writing about romance again! You don't want to get stuck in that kind of plot if you can help it! So of course, Tsubasa's eternally terrible luck means he couldn't help but get stuck in this story. That's why we love the guy though, right? Or at least it's a huge part of why I enjoy Tsubasa's role in the series. It's pretty crazy that even among a cast of heroes largely created by misfortune, Tsubasa always seems to have it the worst. A tragic backstory is one thing, but Tsubasa is always on the run from the law, constantly out of the loop about all the things the rest of the cast know, regularly patronized by Haruka and now Jirou for looking like an adorable cartoon dog, and frequently subjected to any number of more isolated troubles. He even nearly gets in a traffic accident here... which is admittedly a weirdly common occurrence in Donbrothers, so maybe that one isn't actually worth noting. But still, the man simply can't catch a break. Even in this episode about him finally getting to see Natsumi again after a long hard year of the fugitive lifestyle, he does for like, a couple seconds? From a distance? If we're even absolutely, totally sure this mystery is as simple as Miho being Natsumi yet? It's like, was that it? Poor guy. He gets caught up helping someone else out with their romantic problems, and his end up getting totally sidelined. But that too, is why I love the guy. I've said this before, but I still really appreciate how often we see the Donbrothers saving people from dangers unrelated to monsters? There's just something really wholesome about Inu Brother stopping some dude from jumping off a building. These people are all completely nuts, but it's balanced out a ton by how fundamentally kind they generally are. I think it's maybe one of the key reasons Donbrothers is such a watchable show. Tsubasa in particular, you know, he has the outfit of the cool guy loner archetype, and literally nothing else? I'll emphasize it again -- he's only on his own because nobody has ever told him what's going on. He's clearly perfectly happy to be around other people, to the extent he can be while wanted for crimes he didn't commit. If I said he doesn't think he can ask anyone for more help, I wouldn't be saying he thinks he's above that sort of thing; I'd be saying he literally hasn't yet figured out he could ask his new friends for more help. Probably doesn't make things any better that, in what few interactions he's had with the other team members out of uniform, they haven't always been very helpful. So the idea of Tsubasa being an actor prior to his life going down the tubes, it really doesn't surprise me at all. I absolutely believe this guy was just some dorky theatre dude who got caught up in something way beyond him. It really explains a lot, honestly. Like, why would he ever accidentally pretend to be a real dog as Inu Brother? His passion for his trade makes him get too into whatever role he's playing! He can't help it, because he's not actually a loner who hides all his emotions to look cool. If you even thought for a second he was, well then, that just shows you how good he is as what he really cares about. (He probably started wearing that coat specifically to fit the whole fugitive image, for all we know.) I'm not really talking that much about the episode itself, I realize, but all of the above is to say -- I quite enjoyed this one. The designated Tsubasa Doesn't Catch A Break episodes are always highlights for me (as much as a series this consistently great can have highlights), and this was no exception. Being made to suffer, whether comedically or dramatically, is very much the dude's niche at this point, and it makes him possibly the single most endearing hero in the whole show? Again, comedic/dramatic suffering is a common point for basically everyone, but I feel like Tsubasa consistently suffers the most while deserving it the least. This is a man who won't hesitate to run around town in a cheap devil costume all for the sake of reuniting a couple who only kinda seem to want each other. But like, Tsubasa's gonna root for 'em with all he's got anyway! On a day that was supposed to be all about him, no less! And all of this is perfect for him. I can't think of a more fitting way to further explore this character than to have that exploration immediately get derailed by some other nonsense going on. We still learn a lot about Tsubasa anyway, we get a silly and amusing monster plot out of it, and in the end, everything is all well and happy for two people in love. At least in the exact moment Tsubasa saw them at the end, at any rate. Something tells me this kind of thing happens with them a lot... Well, what Katsu-nii is up to after Ultraman R/B is none of my business anyway, so I'll stop sweating it! The point is, I had a great time with this one. Inoue's particular brand of romantic madness can have its ups and its downs, but I think this episode did a great job harnessing that insanity into something that stayed goofy and fun the whole way through, without completely abandoning actual drama in the process.

The best part about getting Ultraman actors involved in Toei shows is how far they can skirt between references on thier official websites lol they did last year with Zrnkaiger and Dyna too.

I adore how manic those blogs always are, by the way? I've been reading both Donbrothers and Revice's little blog things each week, and it's amazing how stark the difference in writing style is. Revice's are generally to-the-point and functional, which is good, but past the comments from Shirakura for each episode, Donbrothers devolves into this mess of completely unexplained and self-indulgent joke references to other media, combined with frequent light ribbing of how unusual Inoue's writing can be. And that's also good! (A favorite incident of mine is when they pointed out that one of the Hitotsuki's name in the script was literally just "Man", for example; the ultimate instance of how... utilitarian Inoue can be with christening his guest characters.) There's plenty of actual informative stuff in there too, which helps, but really, I'm just going there every week to have fun at this point.
