Oh Fish how did you feel about Onari from Ghost? I ask because if you liked him then that might be why Lucky does not bother you as much as he bothers others.

While feeling rushed, I can say I hate this episode the least. One thing is they REALLY need to have some kind of consistency with the giant Monster of the Week. I mean just SOME kind of foreshadowing to the base transforming would have been nice...The Jark Commander saying they were ready for the tricks or something...with ep 2 it was the sigil, and I still have no idea where the monster came from in episode 1...eh...
I like what I see from Stinger. Seriously, please keep him as an antagonist for more than 3 episodes. Obviously he is going to join the team eventually, but draw it out like they did with Chaser in Drive. What I think this show needs is to move to the two episode format to be honest. Allow the story to have some room to grow. |

After a pretty lame first episode, I've been enjoying this show a ton over the last two. Lucky is still kind of aggrevating as a lead character (and I'm sure it'll get worse once he gets power ups) but I do like that the show has sort of been toning it down a bit. As this episode showed, he's not just a guy who screams for no reason, he's got his own beliefs about things (like Stinger not being a bad guy) and sticks to them even against the desires of others. This works so well when Lucky being correct isn't related to some asinine matter and I hope they manage to keep it that way.
Various tidbits I enjoyed about the episode include the stellar action. I think the show has nailed the fights, at least early on, and I have a lot of fun watching them. While I'm not a huge fan of robots, I do enjoy a nicely composited shot and KyurenOh walking towards that tower as seen from behind was such a well done shot I had to watch it a few times. Stinger's actor also seems pretty good! He's got a voice that fits his character and pulls of the angry persona very well. In the near future, I wanna see more of Sparda. I feel like he's the one member of the team that's had the least amount of focus and screen time and it bugs me because I think he could be a fantastic character based on his description. |

We have our main cast. I feel this is a good time to chime in my thoughts on Kyuranger.
The Good: I like the effort they are putting into the worlds and at least trying to make it all a bit off world looking. It's not the best, but commendable. Also the single most interesting background thing is Beet Buster in an afro and painted gold. The character has a proper name, so I'm kind of expecting more from him later. More so than the designs, I really like the use of the mechas as personal spaceships. It makes them very useful when not combined. Plus, this is the point I realized they look a lot like Cowboy Bebop ships and that pleases me. There's even a swordfish. Speaking of swordfish, I kind of like Spada. He's a one dimensional stereotype, but one I haven't seen in a while and there's just something about his delivery of these dumb lines that makes me laugh. Balance and Naga are quite enjoyable. Balance is that type you always feel is about to backstab you, but he's charming enough to get away with it. Naga meanwhile is like Data from Star Trek TNG if Data had emotions, but didn't know what to do with them. I like these. A lot. More please and seeing as Beet Buster is coming back for the next Superhero Wars, can these two please meet Jin and J? Please? Much like Balance and Naga, I feel Raptor and Xiao play off each other very well. Xiao is absolutely terrible and I kind of love him. Raptor is the real brains around here. These two are like Zapp Brannigan and Kif if Kif also wanted to be a Sailor Scout. Again, more of this please. All in all, these things make me really, REALLY, want to like the show, but... The Bad: Hammy is Ed from Lion King. I want to like her, but that forced laugh is making that very hard to like her. Champ is just kind of there even in his focus episode. I like his background and revenge plot, but it feels like the B plot of the episode where it's suppose to be the A plot. The monster designs are kind of weak and forgettable. The intro theme is bland, but the electric guitar instrumental version in the show is actually pretty good. That outro will be in my nightmares. The PAIN: Lucky. Goddammit. You're going to ruin this show. So they go and make a Sentai series with 9 rangers within the first 4 episodes and more comings...and they decide to give this insufferable fool all the lime light. All the complaints have been made by others already. I can't really add anything here. There's a good chance I might not make it to double digits in this show and I guarantee it will be because I got tired of Lucky's shit. Goddammit, I really want to like this show. Here's hoping the not episode preview isn't a lie and really is about Raptor and Lucky is only supporting cast. |

I think this episode, and the series as a whole might suffer from the same problem. There's just too much going on. Not only do you have to worry about nine rangers, you also have to worry about the villains, Xiao as well as whatever side characters that will inevitably be brought on. Kyoryuger worked because even though there were ten rangers total, four of them rarely showed up. Here, everyone needs to be there in every episode and I just feel like the show's attention is too divided. And the big hangup here is that this is something that realistically cannot be fixed due to how the show was set up. I hope they can find a way to balance everything; but I think it will be very hard.

God I can not stop laughing at how much Champ shrinks when he transforms.
Anyway, I'm honestly not sure how I felt about this episode. There were things I liked, but then the mech battle at the end felt tacked on. I know this is beating a dead horse, but seriously, is there some law in Japan that says if a Sentai show doesn't feature a mech battle for one episode children are going to stop buying the toys? Also, I can't wait for the big misunderstanding where it turns out that Stinger was trying to save Dr Anton from Jark Matter and Champ came in when all was said and done. Oh, and wow, the transformation sequences and intros were like on high octane. You would think at the speed they are going this show was only going to be like 15 episodes. Hey Toei, how about slowing down and actually NOT introducing each new ranger every episode? How about developing the first batch of characters BEFORE you introduce another ranger or two? I mean, I fell like the stuff that happened in this episode should have been like episode 10. It just doesn't make sense from a narrative stand point to cram it all right away and then have like 25 episodes of filler. On the positive side, I like the commander and from what I recall, he is voice by Red Racer's actor. That is awesome. Oh, and Lucky didn't speak as much this episode. |

So I watched Over-Time's subs first and then just watched TVN's. Yeah, they changed the meaning pretty much. But I'm very pissed when it comes to naming. I don't give a damn about "Futaba", why can't they just use "Gemini"?
