a lot of people have been a bit down on the trailer and I think part of it is how it's edited. It seems to show the kaijin as violent revolutionaries which doesn't really jive with the themes in the main franchise and leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths because of how charged the imagery of police violence is. THe cop is clearly shown to be distraught which seems to sympathize more with the agent of the state than the victim of the violence and the fact shadowmoon is on the side of the revolutionaries seems to automatically villify them.
However rewatching the shooting directly it seems a lot more nuanced than that. You can see the body language of the ant kaijin is almost fearful, and if you pause at 32 seconds it has blood on its sleeve so it seems to be injured. While an earlier scene in the trailer shows the ant kaijin throwing a cop into a car which paints it as the attacker but I don't think that's the case. the scene of the shooting is definitely in a different location since he throws the cop into a car that's nowhere to be found. I think these scenes are presented out of context or even played in reverse. if I had to guess the order of events would be the ant kaijin being hurt, a cop interpreting it as an attack, and shooting it despite it not being injured at all. The scene of the ant kaijin may come later after the kaijin riots have turned more violent to illustrate a point. Alternatively I could see the ant kaijin being drugged or forced into the fight which is why it's so strong, but whatever effect it's under wears off by the time of the shooting. Either way, the shooting itself is clearly unjustified from the cops perspective since the ant kaijin hasn't presented itself as a threat to him. I could see a situation where golgom is intentionally inciting violence by drugging or influencing kaijin and then using the social unrest to take power in japan. The concept art for golgom we saw gave them more militaristic uniforms so them taking over as a kaijin extermination force could make for an interesting development. |
