Oh look! Stacey is suffering emotionally again! Must be a Sunday. Although for someone who has it bad pretty much every week, this is certainly an especially rough episode on him. Realizing you might be inheriting the bad habits of your abusive father on the same day you nearly got stabbed to death by your mother's ghost is... I mean, geez, what do you even call that? It sucks, to say the least! But it's also the kind of bad day that might lead to a brighter future for Stacey eventually? It's a pretty huge moment of self-awareness for him, at the end of this one, that I don't he's ever really had before. Honestly, I wouldn't have even drawn the connection between Barashitara's plan with the monster of the week and how keeping Hakaiser around means forcing Kaito to fight his own parent. But yeah, it kinda is the same deal, huh? So good on Stacey, for having the empathy to see the bigger picture that way. He's lived an awful life, and he's begun to realize he's letting it make him an awful person. It hurts to confront that kind of thing, but it's an important step in learning to move forward. ...Kinda deep for a Zenkaiger episode! (Not that I want to downplay the quality of the show's writing, mind you!) That's why we all love Stacey though, right? I can assume we all love Stacey? For how alone he constantly feels, I imagine I'm far from the only one still rooting for the poor guy as hard as ever. Well, at least over on Zyuran's end of this story, you've got the much more goofy emotional resolution of the Kikainoids reflecting on how normalized the system of oppression they lived under had truly become after generations of it going unchallenged, and further renewing their resolve to put a stop to it in their own time. ...No wait, hang on, that's another poignant and surprisingly real bit of drama. Man, the show is going hard this week! Except for the part where it doesn't actually feel that way? Not for nothing have I described this show's control of its tone as "masterful" before! Because despite working in all that very genuine substance, this episode isn't any less focused on wacky antics than usual. The choice of monster themes is deliberately messing with expectations under an extremely loose pretense, seemingly just for the sake of being more silly. The usual creatively messed up roll call in present and accounted for. The dinosaur robot is there, getting attacked by giant eggplants and cucumbers this time... it's all just as fun and upbeat as always. The oddly timed holiday premise is put to use for the comedy and the more serious beats equally well, a balance Zenkaiger has gotten very good at striking as it nears its last stretch. There's also the stuff with Zox, which was every bit as entertaining, but I don't have much of an interpretation there as to any sort of theme or development it touches on. Maybe it's there and I just didn't notice. It's not exactly a problem if Twokaiser fighting a pirate ghost is "merely" a lot of flash though. Like, it's the closest thing I have to a complaint, and I'm not even complaining about it. Zenkaiger is just that good!

Wow, Stacey really just does not get to have anything, does he? A reunion with his mother that ends with her trying to kill him. And even when Hakaizer reaffirms to him that he is his friend, Stacey has the revelation that he's basically torturing Kaito by having parent fight child constantly, making him no better than his father.
Poor guy. I'm surprised he even had the clarity of mind for such introspection, considering everything he's put through, and that he hasn't just broken down. Though, even if Stacey is planning on turning on the Tojitendo, it seems they have plans for Hakaizer using pieces of Bokkuwas's old body. I'm curious as to what makes it so special that Ijirude was so worried about it, though.

When family reunions go awry.
As much as I absolutely adored this episode, I do wish we got more out of the ancestors. Not that it's a bad thing, but I do wish we could have gotten some more about them. But boy did Stacey and Hakaiser steal the show at the end, just goes to show how they keep making them better and better. And naturally, the shenanigans with the cast and their ancestors made for some amusing moments, especially the roll call with Jyuran getting attacked by Sanjo and everyone else clearly reeling from it (you can even hear it in Magine's voice). Next Episode: 2021's over folks! Santa's not comin' to town. |

Incredible; Stacey just doesn't seem to be blessed with any good fortune. Upon seeing her again, his mother plots his death. Stacey realizes that Hakaizer is essentially tormenting Kaito by having parent fight child on a regular basis, and that this makes Hakaizer no better than Kaito's father, despite Hakaizer's repeated assurances to Stacey that he is his buddy.
This poor fellow. In light of everything he's been through, the fact that he hasn't completely crumbled before our eyes is astounding.
