I'm not sure this is entirely fair as the gorey aspects to me at least come from how both the Ishinomori manga and Kamen Rider Spirits showed the Riders being strong enough to beat people to a bloody pulp. It also kind of serves to point to the 'loss of humanity' theming Showa riders often had, having such unbelievable strength that you're a killing machine

I re-watched "Drive Saga: Kamen Rider Brain" by accident. As in, I wanted to have a quick peak and then just watched the whole thing again.
This is low-key one of my favorite Kamen Rider things, ever. It is so much fun. The gags hit, mainly due to Shota Matsushima's crazy fun performance as Brain, but the whole thing is just such a well written and fun parody of all things Kamen Rider, I love it. I will never get tired of Brain calling the Mu-members "bargain sale leftovers that couldn’t defeat a Kamen Rider" or Dark Ghost trying to insult Brain by telling him that his weapon is just a repaint And it's not just the comedy, the action is awesome too, so well executed for a Fan-club special, it’s really good. If you haven’t seen this one yet, give it a go. Works wonders even if you haven’t seen Kamen Rider Drive, but will be even better if you did. |

I finally continued right where I left off on Kamen Rider Blade on which I am now a little more than halfway through the series. If this show keeps it up, Blade might also be among my top favorite seasons of Kamen Rider. Just finished the episode where Kenzaki gets his Jack Form. Only 23 episodes to go.

Finally watched Episode 2 of Outsiders now that a sub of it actually showed up on the cat site.
Probably the best one so far? It focuses on Ren and Desast in a post-series world and I think that's pretty cool. Helps that it isn't a retread of a previous series (0 being a Genms epilogue) while also having more of the crossover element in play (Ouja's was pure Ryuki until the end really). Also the fact that Zein is starting to grab his own posse, what with Horobi being awoken by Foundation X only to immediately side with Zein, and Nico deciding to side with Zein too (honestly better for her than what she was went for at the end of Brave and Snipe, that's for sure). Though idk guys... eradicating all evil? Something tells me that plans going to go horribly wrong. Overall, pretty fun and Kamen Rider Desast is a sick design. |

I am now down to the final nine episodes of Kamen Rider Blade. I should be able to finish this series very soon.

So I got into Kamen Rider in the early 2010's. First series I watched from the start, as it was airing, was Wizard. But it's not as if I jumped right in at episode one having no idea what was going on. I'd checked out a few episodes of OOO, I watched Movie Wars Megamax, and people seemed to be having a blast with Fourze. But it was a series I'd never watched - until now.
(Yes, having seen Megamax and Movie Wars Ultimatum and all the movies since, I've seen the ending of Fourze's story before any of the actual story. But it'll still be a fun ride!) And on that note - Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 1 & 2 Is it bad to be nostalgic for an episode structure? Our first 2-part arc is the basic set-up for the series (Look, Cosmic Switch! Zodiarts! Evil teacher! Asshole students who are in the opening sequence so they'll hopefully mellow out sooner than later!) mainly focused around Gentarou and Kengo. And they're a fun duo. Gentarou could easily come across as a cocky asshole, were it not for two things - his rock-bottom intelligence, and his earnestness. His first apparance is chewing Kengo for rejecting some girl, then to jump off a bridge to bring back the letter! Which he does! And the says he'll still befriend Kento, JUST TO SPITE HIM! (I've seen that quote before! I thought it was an edit!) He's just operating on his own rules of reality, where he can convincingly approach the footballers who used him as training practise, brush past them calling him trash, and still try to say "You're my friend" to the monster, and mean it. Kengo is simpler at this point, by virtue of not being the main protagonist, but he's clearly bitter over being unable to fight, his anger at Gentarou for butting in just as much a symptom of his own anger at his own failing body. Yuki is mainly here to serve as the glue between them, but she's still likeable, as her own kooky and offbeat self while still having enough grounding in the real world that she can mediate between the pair. (We also meet Tomoko for like, five seconds, and the spooky witchy girl being the one to trace an IP address? Yeah, that's funny. JK is also here.) All the football stuff is reminding me of an old joke (I don't remember where from) about the kid from Sharkboy and Lavagirl having 7 year old flunkies, which is how Shun and Mio come across here. Haughty and above-it-all, which makes them the obvious targets. Miura's aggression at the lack of respect isn't dealt with amazingly - he basically gets one Gentarou speech about "Bro kick his ass at football, don't deal with your problems by blowing up the school" - and he's honestly more sympathetic than his victims here, but the episode gracefully defuses that tension by having Gentarou and Yuki there for him at the end after they detonate his monster form. He was a kid taking out his pent up aggression, not some monster who deserves no sympathy. A good opning! And we only saw 6 switches in use! By modern standards, that's barely any of the merchandise being used!

Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 3 & 4
Yes, it's also the one with the infamous JAV pool. Hahaha. Core question in these two episodes - is Mio's better-than-thou attitude justified by the amount of work she puts in? Gentarou's answer, and the episode itself, takes a firm "Yes" stance. She puts so much effort into being the best, and is disappointed by others who she feels want to just feel good for liking her. It's not exactly a bad character ideal (or flaw) to have, but my god does she make herself incredibly unlikeable in the process. Tearing up fanmail while demeaning the person who wrote it is not a good look! And I'm not sure the episode fully manages to cross that boundary in the second part with making it seem worth it. (Also, Shun was totally ready to cheat on his girlfriend(?) behind her back, also not a good look for you buddy! You're in the Opening Credits, get some morals!) I'm not going to stand here and lecture on how your characters "Have" to be likeable, that's not how televison works, but I feel the episode misjudges the emotional reaction it wants you to have? Mio's little speech to Chameleon Cheerleader at the end, where she's like "I'm glad you finally showed your true colours" and it's treated as some bonding moment, maybe I'm just not coming at it from the right angle? Because it can very easily read as "I'm a bastard to you, but it's okay because it made you stronger", which is not the best moral for a kids show. And it's the second story in a row where the Victim of the Week is a popular kid sidekick jealous of their friend, who may be a dick, which is giving me bad vibes? It's not quite on the level of "Fighting back against your bully is bad" because both monsters are also on the bully side - and Chameleon Cheerleader is definitlely weirdly possessive of 3rd cheerleader - but I hope it's not a trend that continues! Gentarou, though, is a positive throughout all this. Only he could try and convince someone to win a bet against himself, who openly calls him trash, because he can see how much she truly cares for it. He even likes the Hopping Switch. And I guess that's what I have to try and draw the moral line fron? Like how the Hopping Switch can be useful, you just have to be able to work with it, Mio's brand of haughtyness is good, you just have to know how to use it? I don't know about that for sure...

Oops.
Yeah, Fourze's not a show that necessarily feels the need to rehabilitate its characters so much as one that wants us to understand where they come from. Miu is still a problematic alpha bitch, but she's our problematic alpha bitch. |
