Since Reiwa era just got starting, I won't be including them.
So between Showa and Heisei Riders, which one do you prefer? You like old school riders or new school riders? |

Heisei.
Showa is great. Charming, fun, some crazy unique ideas and memorable characters. But sooner or later, it gets stale. Every show I’ve watched sooner or later completely fades into "Random kid is in trouble, Kamen Rider to the rescue". It's such a shame too, because most Showa shows start off incredibly strong. It's so good that you cannot stop watching. But as I said, sooner or later it just becomes the same MOTW-plots every single time until they remember there's a big bad so let's just beat him in the last episode. I do enjoy me some Showa, no doubt about that. But: Heisei is just superior to me in every single way. They tell compelling stories from start to finish, have so much more complex characters, plots and settings - interestingly Heisei starts slower than Showa does IMO, I need some time to get used to the environment and its rules, but once I do and like what I'm seeing? I keep on watching. And thankfully, it wraps up into a satisfying experience form start to finish in the end. I won’t go into detail about how the fighting scenes and action is better because even though story and characters also hugely benefited from a more demanding audience and more opportunity to cater to them in more modern times, special effects and stunt work naturally involved as well. So even though the fight scenes are incredibly good in Heisei, Showa is just as ambiguous and fun to watch in that regard. But overall, I absolutely prefer Heisei to Showa. |

I've only really seen Amazon on the Showa side of things. If we follow their official classification, then also Shin and ZO (I really need to get around to watching J )
I've watched a couple episodes of Kamen Rider thanks to Shout, but otherwise, I really don't have much say on the Showa end of things beyond knowing a couple plot points and seeing their designs. So I guess I just have to say Heisei by simple virtue of actually having watched more than one show and 2 movies. Solid choreography that's only improved in the years and a willingness to tell more engrossing story lines that extend farther than kid of the week is in danger from monster of the week. I will say though, some of the things the Showa riders go through, especially concerning their origins, makes it clear that they have it rough. You do not want to be a Showa rider

I don't feel like it's that fair to compare them for a number of reasons. The Showa era just can't compete in terms of story, character complexity, special effects, film quality, costumes, or really any major area except maybe stunts (and only there because modern shows are far safer - you're never going to see Fumiya Takahashi climbing on the outside of a cable car going over a bay, for example). I love the Showa era, but it's unavoidably hampered by being a product of the 1970s/80s.
