Decade is definitely on my Kamen Rider shows to watch list though I’m saving this series until I’m finished with the other Heisei Phase 1 shows beforehand (already finished Kuuga) plus a few certain shows from the Showa era which I won’t say what ones I’m talking about specifically due to spoilers.

And I appreciate the spoiler avoidance!

I decided to watch a few Heisei 1 shows before it (Kiva, then Kabuto, then Den-O), and it would certainly make the experience more interesting; but at the end of the day one of the things I like about Tokusatsu shows is that they're still all self-contained and don't require past knowledge to get into. After all, these are kids' shows and hence are going to be a LOT of kids' first shows! And Decade and Zi-O are broadly shows about their main protagonists rather than a sequel to anything that happened before. This isn't, like, Blade Part 2; this is a celebration of Blade, you know?
disregard that though because die you should do a watch thread of every show that gets a direct tribute 2-parter in decade just saying

Well I wasn't expecting this to happen today, or rather last night. So time to start downloading some stuff from krdl to start my rewatch of Decade!
It's been 9 years since I first watched Decade... jeez... Anyway lemme start this preamble before I actually start watching by saying. Oh Decade, I remember enjoying you a lot because it's such an interesting buffet of stuff. It's a similar feeling to when I first started watching Ultraman with Ultraman X. Ultraman X had a bunch of cameos from other Ultraman characters and that influenced me going forward by picking one and going from there. But yeah Decade was so much of a buffet that I decided to choose three Phase 1 shows to choose from. I'll probably point them out as we get to them. But it was definitely an interesting experience. And just finding out about the actual plot to other shows made me interested in the unique spins that Decade decided to do. Also I get to see Tsukasa from the beginning and that'll be interesting to witness again. Decade also has the honor of having a more unique and impactful generational jump between Riders of Phase 1 and Phase 2 than we had going from Heisei to Reiwa. I will not elaborate, it is very far away. Look forward to me talking about it in several months. |

I've probably seen the first episode of Decade more times than any other episode of Kamen Rider, and that's not even counting this time since I'm still downloading a new version for this watch-through. As I've said many times now on these boards, this was the first episode of Kamen Rider I ever watched and it's still one of my favorites. It's a really gripping premiere that establishes several important aspects of Decade: the mutiverse premise, Tsukasa and the way his powers work, and stuff that kinda feels like random bullshit (hey there, spirit guide Wataru).
I will probably talk more about the show's plot and characters as we get into it. For now, I have two things I want to start with. First of all, I goddamn love the Decade suit. Eleven years later and it is still one of my favorite Rider suits of all time. Part of that may be anchoring bias, but honestly I just love the basic concept with the asymmetrical chest and the clean black, white, and pink sections. Love the green eyes and the black bars on the helmet. Love the simple and straightforward Decadriver with its awesome voice. Just a topnotch design all around and it is all downhill from here for Decade-original suits. Second, I want to acknowledge one of the most enduring legacies of Kamen Rider Decade, something that we're still feeling the effects of through Saber and into Revice. There are two major pillars that Phase 2 of the Heisei era was built on. One of them came from Den-O: the monster/victim two-parter format that shifted the show's focus away from serialized elements and more onto episodic adventures. The second pillar first appears here in Decade with the introduction of the Ganbaride cards. For newer fans, Ganbaride was (is?) a Japanese Kamen Rider arcade game that I do not even remotely understand how to play. What I do know is that it involved inserting Ganbaride cards into a scanner to unlock abilities in the game. I assume you could also win cards from doing well, but that's just an educated guess. Ganbaride cards are modeled after the cards that Tsukasa uses on the show and fans were encouraged to buy these cards not only to play the arcade game, but also to unlock more voice clips in the Decadriver. There were a bunch of different ways to get cards, including pack-ins with most (all?) Decade merch and in gashapon machines. This was the birth of the collectible belt gimmick. Gaia Memories, Core Medals, Eyecons, Rider Watches, Wonder Ride Books, they all started here (and many of them were also usable on upgraded Ganbaride cabinets - not sure how long that lasted, but I know it was at least up through Astro Switches). |

So watching the first episode of Decade again was an experience. It's been basically 9 years since I last saw it, so it felt like I was opening up a time capsule.
The first episode is very striking. It hits the beats it needs to and immediately thrusts us into the second apocalypse after giving us a first apocalypse via dream sequence. It's kind of interesting to see a more rigid Tsukasa, while there's many of the quirks he usually has from later on, he's a lot more rigid in his first showing, also he looks very lively and not like he needs sleep unlike later on in the years post his series. I also really liked Natsumi, she's very much the person to reign him in and I like that, it helps strike a good balance. The action was pretty great, Decade as a suit is something I adore, floppy shoulders and all. I also just love how snappy and satisfying the Decadriver and Rider Cards are as a gimmick. Also the main Rider Cards look so cool. There's a reason I made sure to buy the korean release which made sure to remove most Ganbaride stuff on the cards. Wataru is interesting... it was weird going from this interpretation of Wataru to the one when we started Kiva. Even Wataru at the end of Kiva feels different, this one feels more enigmatic than mature. Overall a real good start to everything, and given I haven't viewed much Phase 1 Heisei I suppose my opinion of things might remain the same. Anyway, Journey through the Decade, as many has said, is a real good song. It's got a very somber sort of feel to it. And I really dig that as it makes Decade's theme very unique as far as Rider Songs go. Also it has Gackt, the one elusive man who refuses to become merchandise so people can complete collections. |

I personally watched Decade as my tenth series, since I start with Hesei and worked my way in order. I seem to be an unusual case, and I've run into a lot of people who did start with Decade.

I have to admit it's the first time I'm hearing of this as a trend! I mean, some people starting with Decade, okay; every series is someone's first. But a lot of people starting with Decade? A bit surprising! Is it perhaps down to the much shorter then usual length of 31 episodes?
