I could probably do this for Kamen Rider too, but Super Sentai somehow strikes me as more suited (pun unintended) to this kind of question.
Given how the sheer amount of episodes per series demands quite a commitment, and also how first episodes may not always be representative of the show, can someone point me to the episodes of the following shows that could help me figure out whether I'd like them? Hurricaneger Magiranger Boukenger Go-Onger Shinkenger Goseiger Ninninger Imagine a kid, turning the TV on and seeing an episode mid-series*. What would hook that kid? (I know at least half of those on my list aren't considered good series by many, but I'm operating from the assumption hat no series is ever so bad as to have no redeemable moments.) I'd love to see good episodes of course, but I suspect what I'm looking for are closer to typical (or representative) episodes. Please make a distinction if you deem it appropriate. And if anyone wants to use this thread to ask about other series, please go ahead. Same goes for those who want to recommend series I didn't mention in the list above. * Or imagine me, accidentally tuning into the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode with the Gentlemen and then going back to season one as a result of the latter half of that episode. As someone who thinks Shinkenger not being good is blasphemy I want to say all eps but I recommend watching episode 11 and 12. It is a two-parter that I think showed the lord - vassal bond being strengthened between Shinken Red and the other four.

Thanks, Sunred! And oh I'm aware that Shinkenger is generally well-liked and I certainly wasn't referring to it as part of the group that most people seem to dislike.

No problem.
Thank you for explaining. I think regardless of whether the overall show is bad or good most of the shows tend to have that one or two episodes that capture the essence of the show very well. Goseiger I know is not a popular pick but it had its moments in later episodes looking back now. The ones especially where Alata mans up I think we're worth watching.

Episode 24 of Ninninger would be a good one to try I guess. It has a cool monster, a fun episode-specific plot, and decent action. It was one of my favorites.
The best episode, however, is 37, where the Ninningers get sucked into a JRPG. It's a fantastic episode, but is nothing like any of the other ones. Honestly though, Ninninger is kind of weird because the individual episodes can all be really enjoyable, but the overall plot is pretty meh. The big bad doesn't even show up until the 3rd from last episode, and basically doesn't do anything. I enjoyed the series, but there are much better Sentai to watch. Give those two episodes a try though.

Gosh I wish I could help more with this. I've seen about half these shows and like them but I'm not sure I could really name a particularly good episode from memory. These'll be more episodes that stick out to me personally than anything.
Magiranger: I extra don't now what to say here. Magiranger's greatest strengths are its sense of continuity, character development, and pacing, none of which would ever be apparent from a single episode. I will say I checked out episode 15 first, since sometimes I like to watch a random episode of a Toku show I don't really plan on getting around to. Clearly it didn't turn me off the show. Go-onger: Go-onger doesn't really vary in quality that much episode to episode so any one is a decent pick. Episode 5 was an early stand-out to me though. It's the first episode to focus on Go-on Green and I think those episodes tend to be extra funny. Ninninger: Episode 11 has a fun meta sort of plot about one of the mecha feeling left out of the action in favor of newer toys. It's really representative of Ninninger's quirky sense of humor and it probably also shows off the almost Tsuburaya-level practical effects it had for the mecha scenes. Ninninger left even me burned out by the halfway point but I still think it's kind of underrated. A very fun show in general. And if we're allowed to shill our personal favorites: Episode 7 of Go-Busters really gives a clear picture of the unique Sci-Fi/military(ish) style the show had and, being an episode of Go-Busters, is generally awesome. ToQger is a great show that had a really rough start so more than a lot of shows here it's a good idea not to judge it based on its first couple episodes. I'd recommend episode 10 as being solidly representative of the show. It's not too different from any other episode but it was the first time the show used its "imagination" theme to have a good message. Hope any of that helped you!

For what it's worth, I thought Chief/Bouken Red's "bad luck" episode was pretty fun. (Task 27) :P

Just an update to again give my thanks to those of you who made recommendations. I've been enjoying the episodes you all mentioned a lot, so this is a good thing.
The Shinkenger episodes were a little "difficult" to watch, since the emotional pay-offs struck me as rather dependent on character dynamics established in the preceding episodes. The good news is that it's making me want to watch Shinkenger at some point, partly to get into that group vibe from the beginning. For now, though, I'm curious: what's with saying "the same" during roll-call? As for Ninninger, I watched 11 (and 12), 24, and 37. All very enjoyable, though I suspect this might be because I don't feel as much pressure to get into the show as a whole. Despite my love for the all-over-the-place mech designs and Starninger, I can't muster up the drive to watch it all. Still, they were fun and loveable, with clearly a difference in tone from Shinkenger. I now have three episodes of Boukenger lined up that I haven't watched yet. 27 was recommended in this thread, but I've seen a recommendation for 25 elsewhere, and decided to get 26 as well, since it featured the Boukenger member I find cute. *LOL* (As for ToQger and Go-Busters, I'm not watching those episodes yet, because I've just started on my full-series-viewing of both shows. I am, in other words, already invested in watching those shows. Current viewing status: I'm four episodes into ToQger and five into Go-Busters) |

It's just a way to vary role calls up. Since they're all Shinken(Color), rather than repeat Shinken 7 times in an intro, they follow up Takeru's introduction as ShinkenRed with "The same" (Shinken), along with their personal color.
If it's some kind of samurai thing, I certainly wouldn't know

That may sound like gibberish but the point I'm getting at is I think Ninninger might be really fun watched at whatever your own pace is. Zyuohger's been great but in some ways I honestly kind of miss Ninninger. It was a really good show in its own way. Quote:

In all seriousness, I hope you enjoy them. I like Sentai but Go-Busters and to a lesser extent ToQger were the only times so far it's really clicked with me on a deeper level than just "this is a really fun show".
