Also, Zyuohger is nothing special in regard to its violence - most tokusatsu have no problem with showing people die. Though if you want something that'll really surprise you, the second episode of Shinkenger always stands out to me because of the way Takeru (ShinkenRed) treats an injured member of the team. And just to contest something that was posted earlier: Goseiger's a pretty great series. That cast are definitely not the strongest you'll ever see in Sentai, that's absolutely true, but it's got so much more going for itself. You've got arcs with the team facing different villain factions, an interesting communal set up (the Rangers are from different "tribes") and the one outstanding actor on the cast, Chiba Yudai, who plays GoseiRed, is absolutely one of the best Reds Sentai has ever seen. He's soft spoken and very flighty at times but in desperate situations, he dials up the intensity to 11. If something seriously bad is happening to someone he cares about, you can see the anguish it puts him in. Quote:
I mean if you like SPD, you're probably gonna enjoy Dekaranger. It's a great show.

He probably means in the US - Zyuranger, Dairanger, Kakuranger, and Ohranger (this fall) are currently available on DVD via Shout! Factory.

I mean, it's still perfectly reasonable for a person to enjoy both, but SPD and Dekaranger have pretty unique tones to each other. I heard Sentai was typically more kiddy than KR so seeing a MOTW blow up busses and cars when it's clear there are people was surprisingly contradictory to that statement |

Sentai and Kamen Rider are both aimed at essentially the same demographic. Kamen Rider definitely presents itself as the more dramatic of the two and can sometimes do things I don't think Sentai would do. Like, they'll both kill off characters that transform, but Kamen Rider can at times do it in a more gruesome manner. That said, I think they both probably have the same ceiling on what they're allowed to do, Rider just maybe goes there more often because you have more mothers in the audience by that point and it helps if the show is a bit more like a J-Drama.
That and when Kamen Rider relaunched itself with Kuuga, being this tonally different show from Sentai helped give it an identity other than "here's another hero show to replace Metal Heroes" |

The above poster basically recommended every Sentai from 1984 to the present, skipping only 6 out of 33: Fiveman, GoGoV ("go go five"), Gaoranger, Abaranger, Goseiger, and Ninninger. Dunno what his problem with GoGoV or Abaranger is. I thought those two were decent.

I don't think GoGoV and Abaranger was horrible though, it's just that they sorta feel lacking in some places. I will say though that Go Yellow doing that grappling move after drinking milk was hilarious and Abare Black's story was alright. Just that overall not my cup of tea. Goseiger at first I was a bit hyped but after seeing the first 10 eps or so I felt meh, I still love the designs for Ninninger but the pacing was overall not working for me. Fiveman I like but feels too generic to recommend. Gaoranger is alright and is an important show in terms of bringing in the concept of auxiliary robots, but looking back doesn't hold up for me as I thought it would. Boukenger was fine when it came out but doesn't hold up as well personally. Akashi/Bouken Red was and still is THE MAN though.

Usually when someone asks for a recommendation on which Sentai to watch, they end up getting suggested every bloody show by everyone. So just go with the one that you think looks the most interesting. Go-Busters rules. Watch that.

And honestly, $35 for a 50 episode series is nothing. Not only is that less than $1 per episode, something like that is rare, but it's only $35. I'm not telling them to go out and buy the $100 DVD volumes for a show. Quote:

Hence why I recommended the DVDs Shout! has released. Not only do you get some of the best series Sentai has to offer, but you also support the official releases. |

Oh! This completely slipped my mind. You don't even need to buy the Sentai DVDs from Shout!. All of Dairanger and Zyuranger are streaming on their video site, Shout Factory TV. As long as you disable adblock for that site, they'll get some revenue from you visiting and watching. I'm sure we'll also get Kakuranger. (after the inevitable 6-7 episode marathon like they had with Zyuranger and Dairanger announcing the next sets)
Shinkenger's probably more balanced in being "adult" than Gekiranger. Like, it had comedy but it wasn't as "wacky" as the stuff in Gekiranger most of the time. Last edited by Aoi Kurenai; 07-30-2016 at 10:46 AM.. |
