When Jirou turns evil, there's a scene of gold light switching to silver, which might support my theory about Don Dragokuu (good Jirou) and Torabolt (bad Jirou) being split personalities. The silver tiger form itself hasn't showed up yet, but Torabolt might be influencing him indirectly, putting evil thoughts in his head to serve his goal of heroism. Kitou expressed concern about his abrupt execution idea to Tarou, so she was already on to Jirou's problematic behavior. Reminds me of another silver tiger man from Ryuki who had a warped idea about becoming a hero. Another problem with Jirou is that he's trained most of his life for this moment, so he doesn't really have any talent outside of being athletic, only basic competency. He can draw manga, but he self-inserts as a very unsubtle Mary Sue protagonist. He can recite haiku, but it's just redundant repetition. Everybody's annoyed with him. While Tarou is a superhero trying to become a regular dude, Jirou is a regular dude trying to become a superhero and failing at both. It'll be intriguing to see where this goes.
Inubrother's shuriken finally makes its debut and I was surprised by how he can shoot it in midair to change its trajectory. Feels like something you could do in a video game, which is very appropriate. It's cool how these weapons do more than they appear on the surface, like Onisister's missile kanabou. Speaking of Onisister, we almost got to see Don Dragokuu Avatar Change in to her form, before Kitou knocked some sense in to him. Reminds me of how Hiiro almost became EX-Aid that one time. The way Dragokuu used their glasses like that was also surprising, since I presumed there was going to be some kind of conflict between Don Momotarou and Sarubrother here, but nope, that wasn't the real Sarubrother. It's also symbolic of how Jirou sees himself as the center of the world, instead of relying on companions, he becomes his companions. He's like that guy you find in an MMO who does his own thing and constantly blames teammates for their "mistakes". Still not a fan of the superfluous Alters, but I love how much Dragokuu's looks like Montgomery Gator!

It was a little shocking to see the beginning of this episode actually address things that happened last time. I mean, you know, that's kind of how serialized narratives work, but you can't always take that for granted with Donbrothers! This whole plotline with Tsuyoshi's overzealous desire to protect Miho began when Kiji Brother got a guy sliced up by the Notou, and nobody really followed up on that the week after. When Tsuyoshi was crying out an apology to Tarou at the end of last episode, I kind of assumed that was the last anyone needed to hear about it. Like, no big deal! One of the Donbrothers just literally turned into a monster, but it's all fine now, so no hard feelings! ...And appropriately enough, that's exactly how everyone besides Tsuyoshi feels about the matter, so these characters aren't going totally off the script just yet. They might actually be improving on themselves though? It's a question of how consistent this ends up being, but some of the interactions between the team here really give me the impression that Tarou coming back is sort of the start of a new chapter for the team. They had a chance to think about how much Tarou actually means to them, and judging by his behavior in this one, it seems Tarou might be starting to understand how much his companions mean to him. It's only a little bit at a time, for sure, but you can see the characters slowly becoming functional, and it's still nice how nice that is. Jirou though, that guy, he's gonna be a whole new project to work on. It'd be enough if he were *only* obnoxiously over-eager to help, but it turns out if you don't give the dude the attention he's after, he'll become overly eager to wipe out anyone in his way instead. I said I was excited to see what Inoue would do with the new hero routine, and I gotta say, this is pretty hilarious so far. We've had villains who become heroes, loners with great skills in combat, and dudes who are just plain weird, but Jirou is a weird hero skilled in combat who becomes a villain the episode after he gets his powers. Can't say I've seen that one before! It's hard to say I have any sort of grasp on who exactly this character is right now, but that's exactly why I'm so interested to see how his development plays out. Something that's also making Jirou a lot of fun so far is that Inoue seems to have a real talent for giving space to his introductory arc in a way that keeps him in the spotlight without making the whole show revolve around him. His presence acts as something that drives the plot further along, but the characters we've been following this whole time are still allowed to have drama relating to things outside of how they interact with Jirou, and I really dig that. It's a pretty natural thing for how this show is written, since it's always been unafraid to do several things at once, but it's still pretty commendable. Donbrothers very much seems to take the "everyone's the main protagonist" approach to Super Sentai storytelling, and it's been getting some great results out of that.

Oh, now I really wish we've had a running gag up until this point of everyone else, especially Haruka, treating and playing with Inubrother like he was an actual dog, and him being unable to help but go along with it. Besides that, I think the other scene I really liked was the very brief chat between Tarou and Sonoi. Nothing much is really said, but I really like that quick acknowledgement that the two are in a pretty strange place in their dynamic right now.
So Jirou was already a bit screwy before, but now apparently he has a whole other even more twisted personality underneath! I was hoping he just decided to be evil on the spot for a while like it was nothing, but a meaner version of him popping up every now and then could be fun too. (And hey, a chance to do that archetype better after Donbrother's sister show got rid of my favourite goth demon...) Speaking of him, Sentai has been doing this for a while now, but I do really like how the last few shows have been spacing out the introduction of the new guy's merchandise, and that in turn stretches out their introduction as a character to the cast beyond just their debut episode. I vaguely remember people expressing impatience over how long it took Gigant Driller to show up in Kiramager, but I liked how they took their time with it and it looks like we're following suit with this show! This week, we had the new Alter, and it looks like next week will be Alter Changes with the new toy. I assume after that will be the alternate form and then after that, the robot. |

So Jirou, when he feels ignored, goes on a rampage? Huh, that's one way to do the evil ranger thing. Haruka literally slaps him out of it, too. I'm super curious as to where this is headed towards. If his little story is accurate and he does actually have to kill Tarou.
Also, I liked the growth Tarou has already undergone. A few episodes back, and trying to compliment his team literally killed him. Now not only does he give them a compliment, but he also apologizes to Jirou! Even if it only has to be said once, the fact that he was able to say it at all is crazy. While Shinichi's assumption that he couldn't hit Jirou was off (Tarou doesn't hit people), it was still nice to see that they're actually growing together as a team to the point that Tarou actually does care about them. Also, legit, I'm surprised they still haven't learned Inu Brother's identity. It's not a bad thing that they're not rushing it, but I'm just afraid his story along with Miho/Natsumi's mysteries might end up being stretched a little too far.

I am very surprised Haruka didn't maul Jiro on the spot for saying "You can plagiarize it if you want!" (Same with Jiro even suggesting the idea that Tsuyoshi should break up with Miho)
It's very sweet, how Taro's changing bit by bit, learning to appericate his comrades more. Good for him! (The Taro/Sonoi stuff was also pretty good!) Tsubasa saying him acting like a dog was "on reflex".....Natsumi must...-no, never mind! I don't even want to finish that thought! It's supposed to be a cute scene, the "you can do it!" thing, but Miho secretly being a Juuto, I wonder if there's actual magic in those "magic words".... The producer notes' stated that Jiro is "evil without malice". I can see that really clearly. Jiro's almost like a child in a sense, he wants to be given attention and affirmation on his fantasies, and has a total tantrum out when people don't give him what he wants! He's not exactly a bad guy, but his actions do cause everyone trouble......an interesting dynamic for a sixth and the rest of the team! Good on Haruka for shutting things down with a good slap! |

I think Doragoku is going through a Two-Face dynamic, and I'm all for it! Even if his Changer's voice can be a little annoying (mainly the standby).
Fun episode. Tsuyoshi being a precious cinnamon roll (might be my favorite character), Tsubasa becoming doggo, and Haruka being savage, I love it! Not too much to say, other than Jirou being kind of fun being a dork trying to win the respect of his seniors, while also possibly having an evil side that's most certainly relevant to his character. Next Episode: Tsubasa becomes a Showa Villain. |
