I've never had an issue with them myself? Always seemed good. Though admittedly I'm not sure I notice many problems with modern subgroups; the only times I tend to have problems are with subs from like a decade ago that are still the only stuff you can find for Showa seasons

I remeber for Zero-One I checked out their subs, over-time's subs, and tv-nihon's just to compare them all, and i watched the Genm ones first, but then the other two just seemed a lot better, at least personally Idk what the deal is because it would be hard to quantify, maybe they're just not for me for some reason? I might flip through their revice episode 1 tho just to compare and contrast with IzuSubs Tbh i don't really mind IzuSubs, they use a couple awkward word choices now and again but for the most part the flow of the dialogue works for me, so it's probably just a personal preference thing overall _____________________________________________________________ EDIT: after running though some of my favourite scenes from the episode in the GenmSub version I think I do prefer the IzuSubs version, though I could definitely see other people liking the Genm ones more I do appreciate the subs for the transformation text messages and the theme song lyrics I think it's definitely a me thing though since again I can't really point to anything wrong with the subs, they just don't quite click with me, idk Also took a look at NonActionable's scrub of the IzuSubs, and it seems pretty close to ideal for people who want more of the Japanese translated (it also has the texting and the lyrics translated), and a bit more localized... but they still have combi I'm, and also use demon rather than devil Last edited by TheJaz; 09-06-2021 at 12:43 PM.. |

Oh yeah now that we have 3 different translations for it how is everyone feeling on Ikki's catchphrase? (In Japanese i think it's "Ikki ni ikouze")
For those who don't know, the phrase means something along the lines of "Let's go all out" or sort of "let's go, get it in one!" depending on how you look at it I guess but it's a pun of course on Ikki's name, so it also sounds like "let's go Ikki!" basically lol IzuSubs has it as "We're going all out", which is very literal, no pun GenmSubs has: "Let's get this in one go" which is also literal, no pun While NonActionableFansubs went with: "It's Ikki time!" which is all pun and no translation really It's interesting to me how all three are pretty different In Japanese I think the pun is pretty good but it's definitely not easy to translate... Personally if I stick to the literal ones I prefer "We're going all out" But overall "It's Ikki time!" is very fun and reminds me of over-time's translation of "uchuu kiita", as "its space time" which I was a fan of, (tho that's a more accurate translation overall) so yeah, idk if "ikki time" is better but I do like it, definitely more iconic and recognizable sounding (iconic as in, "We're going all out" is smth any rider could say, while "it's Ikki time" feels more unique to Revi) How's everyone else feeling about the catchphrase and the localization options? _____________________________________ EDIT: I forgot that JawSubs had it as "Let's go with no breaks!" in the trailer, so there's that variation too, and i havent checked the legendrushscrub which might also be different! Still Izu and Genm are the two big options rn, and NonActionable will do the blu ray releases, so those are three we'll be seeing the most Last edited by TheJaz; 09-06-2021 at 01:26 PM.. |

Reminds me a lot of when we were getting subs for the first few episodes of Zero-One with how pun-heavy Aruto's humour was... this is definitely a lot more important though. I'm trying to think of a good translation just now and I gotta admit it's really hard to fit both aspects in; I can see why these subbers went with what they did. I think I like Genm's the most as it's more distinctive even if it doesn't include the pun, but NAF's is just downright funny

His out of suit catchphrase "aruto ja naito" is even more complex than Ikki ni Ikouze, (toku news network explained aruto ja naito in a video if you're curious), but I think a lot of the groups did a good job making it sounds like a comedian's punchline even if it wasn't too accurate to the Japanese pun For ikki Genm's is probabaly more recognizable than Izu, but I think the Izu one sounds more natural, but that's just a preference thing for sure The NAF one is so charming and silly, I wish it was a bit more accurate because if it was it would be my favourite one for sure, partially just for how fun it would be to shout at a convention lol BONUS NOTE: My wife says it would be really funny/good if it was translated as "Lemme at 'em" or "Let's Ikki'splode!" lol Last edited by TheJaz; 09-06-2021 at 01:41 PM.. |

"Let's do this Ikkity split!"
(I made a mockup of the best pun I can think if that's still accurate to the meaning of the line) Last edited by TheJaz; 09-06-2021 at 04:21 PM.. |

Y'know, I do want to like... and I need to stress up front that this isn't to negate any criticisms (because many of them are very legitimate!), but especially given what happened with Toei midway through Saber I do want to give a shoutout to fansubbers in general. They put in a lot of work, very fast work, with no real pay or compensation (IzuSubs said they're not doing side stuff this year because they have a full time job now, and is only able to do the episodes on the weekends, and that's crazy to me!); and I think it is just sort of, accepted as normal now? But I do wanna put out there that the fact any of them are doing this at all is great, and I guess that's why I've been hesitant to criticise them too much. I couldn't really imagine doing what they do and I owe them so much

i like to compare and contrast things when there's multiple options and share my opinion, but I've probabaly been picking on one sub group more than the rest Once upon a time, I was part of a VERY small scrub / translation group for 10 or so episodes of an anime, and it was an absolutely grueling 2 and a half months, we usually would get episodes out within 12-24 hours of the episode airing in Japan (though we got delayed a few times due to busy schedules and sometimes just burnout half way through an episode) it was mind numbing work, tho it was fun in its own way... in the end I had to leave the group because my life just got too busy and I couldn't give up a whole day of my week anymore, still feel bad about it since they abandoned the project a bit later... the show has official subs now tho so at least people can watch it now, thats nice in retrospect I have a lot of nostalgia for those times, but honestly the work I was doing on thay project probabaky took more effort than my "real job" at the time, the people making these translations are really putting a lot into it, and I certainly respect them for that, I barley made it through two and a half months, how people do it for years, especially solo projects, is beyond me, it's certainly impressive I also don't know nearly enough Japanese to make sense of a whole episode of Rider, so I definitely do rely on these groups and owe them a lot, it's been a scary year for toei property fansubs too as said above, so it's amazing that people are still staying the course at all Last edited by TheJaz; 09-06-2021 at 03:55 PM.. |

なかなかうまいじゃん~!I honestly really like that! I kinda want to see a sub group actually use that exact translation now.
